  • Hey guys in this video I show you my latest creation. A liquid cooled Li ion Battery module. This video is about the battery module itseld. I will make other videos about the electronics the liquid cooling circuit and keep you updated with the progression of this project. Have fun! Feel free to ask questions. And of course like comment and subscribe :)

    There's an Indian company called Clean Electric i guess, you can find a video on the 'Electric Vehicles' channel where they showcase liquid cooled battery pack for two wheelers which does not require any pump as it is completely sealed and the batteries are submerged in dielectric liquid for direct in contact cooling which i think is not only efficient but lightweight only thing is we can't use it for larger vehicle or larger loads as the housing of the battery pack itself acts as the heat sink which is air cooled! it's a 3.5 KWH battery pack that they made for two wheelers!
    Do you think its possible to make a metal housing for individual cells which are just a bit larger than the cell so that we can add rubber seals on each ends and fill the housing with some thermally conductive liquid.. this way due to the seals, the liquid won't come out of the cell housing and furthermore the housing could be instead of being individual units it can be a pre determined number of cell slots and each parabolic curve square instead of being an empty space would be the fins that connect one cell housing to the other like a honeycomb while in the center would be a natural tube through which we can pump the coolant...!!!

    nice prototype ! where did u get the copper pipes , what did u use to bend them , where did u buy the thermally adhesive from? what is the weight of the cooling system filled with coolant? can u make public the schematic of the bms?

    Its actually more efficient to cool the contacts as they are closer to the core of the cell witch is the hotest.

      Yes you are right. My fear was shorting out the battery so i opted for this way of cooling it. Tesla battery modules are also cooled on the battery walls so i guess it should be sufficient. Thanks for the advice though!

      @@johniii5776 You can see here the difference. Indeed is much better for the cooling to be on the nickel strips.
      Probably would worth to combine them both?

    So, your lines are copper? I would be a little concerned about the electricity jumping because it is so close to the terminals.

      Should be no problem. 48 volts can not really jump over that distance, but it is a fair concern

    should make the copper into triangle or square shape to get more surface area.
    wrap the exposed copper with insulation so nothing shorts, maybe thermal tape.

  • @keith3761
    @keith3761 2 роки тому +1

    Hello John III, Any chance you could do this with pex piping or silicone tubing instead? I think it would be better because it would be non conductive and would be a lot easier to install or work with. You lose some thermal conductivity though.

      @@Storebrand_ yeah but what is the heat buildup rate exactly? how many btu per min? plastic piping may be more then enough to match the heat buildup rate.

      @@keith3761 I was thinking the same tbh. Plus copper is pretty prone to corrosion, assuming the battery case isn't airtight

      I filled the pipe with salt, closed both ends. Then i bent it around another pipe. The salt is needed so the pipe does not collaps. Then i dissolved the salt in the pipe with water. Very time consuming and hard process to be honest not really worth it but thanks for asking

    • @johniii5776
      @johniii5776  4 роки тому

      Well just the batteries were like 250$ at around 2$ per cell (91 cells) plus import tax from www.nkon.nl but the project as a whole was much more expensive. Without liquid cooling you could make this pack for 300$. With liquid cooling its more like 500 $. Not worth it in my opinion. I just did ot for fun not because its practical.

      What happens if there is a coolant leak or a pump failure when you’re not around? Why not use more batteries to draw less amps or a battery designed for a high draw, I know Tesla use liquid cooling but their batteries packs are completely sealed so no other way to dissipate heat. This setup and pushing a battery past it design limits is asking for trouble.

    LOL.....this is something like a nuclear reactor core cooling problem............having a heat problem in a critical area is not a sleep easy scenario......these DIY devices are accidents waiting for a time and place to happen......sleep with one eye open.
    It would be better for the cooling part to have some separation between the batteries and immerse the complete battery pack in a metal box filled with transformer oil and then pump the oil around to a radiator like a car's cooling system.
