I took machine tooling in 1993 and 94. The first project was a 1" cube + or - .003". The only tool was a file. We did not drag them backward either.
Other underappreciated tools IMO: spring-loaded center punch, portable battery-powered vacuum cleaner, and cleaning solvents like alcohol or industrial solvent
The latex gloves you were wearing deserve a mention
The vice is really helpful, too.
To go along with the popsicle sticks, instead of tape, I use 2 Oz. portion control cups. In a small shop like mine, they are infinitely better than tape. Used tape in the early days, and epoxy was everywhere. The first pack was given to me by a restaurant that I went to a lot, as long as I wasn't making jello shooters in them. Yeah, I was 57 at the time. Didn't feel like I was in the jello shooter demographic any longer.
Couldn't agree more, especially about the popsicle sticks! I've been justifying my popsicle habit to my wife for years by letting her know how many I use in my shop. I discovered they're great for sanding right by the plunge line also.
Same here. I can whip up a dozen double-sided sanding sticks in five minutes, and that will get me through most projects. You can also shape them to get into tight spots. I find them especially helpful when I need to smooth bone or antler.

Clamps. I agree with all your list, and clamps can be great.
Of course, some good vices are essential, but often you want to stick two things together without glue ou without leaving a mark on it. Clamps are made for that.
The file is the only tool that can make a copy of itself.
Baby wipes. They remove dirt, metal dust, oil, glue. They're honestly amazing. Always got a packet on hand.

I would like to throw angle grinder on that list, but it really depends on the person/setup.
Right on point! But,,,I still have a corded drill around just in case all my batteries go down,,,yup , has happened.
I still have several corded drills for jobs where I'm drilling a lot of holes or very deep ones. They still have their place.
Another one we take for granted: light.
The vise belongs on the list along with the file.
I got a box of files and could use another box full 👍

a belt grinder is a luxury and not important, neither is a drill press, a band saw or most of that list, a forge, a hammer, a file, a punch and a stone is all you need

Mr Walter humans have used files in some form or fashion throughout humanity's existence someone could consider the stones as a form of a file
I occasionally blow my nose in a paper towel. Better than a sleeve.
