You save my life Man!! After three nights fighting wih my egr on my w203, turn right, turn left...and for the next year i will remove it!! ... Thank's a lot with this trick!! My C220 come back to normal! Thank's!
while it is still on the car you can take the plastic cover off the back and clean out the carbon dust out and clean and oil the workings and check that it is not stuck also if you take to code off you will see iof it works by just revving the engine while someone looks ,,,,it is as easy as that ,no need to take it off as it looks like a maintenance thing to do anyway, it is to the right hand side looking at it standing in front of the car .
tackling my clk egr tomorrow, going on a family holiday in a couple of days and garages are too busy to take it in , slackening the bolts and running the engine is a great tip and your video has given me the confidence to have a go , thanks for sharing👍
Glad to hear it, it's very easy to do really so you should have no issues! Honestly the slackening the bolt and running engine tip was a game changer for me! Thanks for feedback, let me know if you have any issues or how it goes!

@@iainmcintosh9068 Brilliant to hear matey! They can be very welded on there, as I had mine off about a year or so it wasnt too bad but good idea giving it a bit of a tap as well! No problems, glad you're sorted!
that looks like one of the easiest things to fix on the car, yet mercedes wants €1400 to replace it on mine. I had the car transported there because i didn't know what the issue was, need to find a way to get it back so i can replace this myself. Thank you.
Yep it's really not a hard task, if you're sure its this (it is a common issue) then I'm sure you can either repair or replace yourself no problem at all. Hope this helped you save some money dude
@@Enginesetc I removed and cleaned the EGR valve, but there was something loose inside it moving around when i handled it, tried to put it back on but the car behaves the same way as before. So i guess i need a new one. But mercedes said the new one has to be calibrated, and there are so many different brands of EGR valves that supposedly fit this car. But i'm not sure if the brand matters or not?
Ah might be a broken component then sadly :( If you can find a good condition used one maybe that would be a decent option from a trusted breaker? Alternatively I'd say at the end of the day choose a mid range brand and go for it. It's essentially just a motor moving an arm in and out dependant on throttle input so nothing crazy but the motor has to last more than 5 minutes like a cheap chinese one might give you!@@Wormweed
nice video, but what do you advice, if your step don't work and valve hold like welded. My last idea - remove both screws and full gas 🙂, but seems little risky.
Thanks! What I'd recommend is just backing off the screws maybe halfway, full gas like you say. Leave them in a little bit as you dont want the EGR valve flying somewhere into space! You can also try if that doesn't work, hitting the valve rotationally using a soft hammer or a hammer and a soft interface i.e. block of wood. Rotational force really helps!
Full gas didn't worked. Even without any screws in. I was able to rotate it but it's still stuck inside. Also kinda easy to move it counter-clockwise but akward to move it clockwise back because there is a hose in the way. Any more ideas?
Hi Marty, sorry I didnt see this comment, youtube has been weird about giving me notifications! I will make a video shortly showing how to do this, check back in a week or so :)
Ah, maybe try undoing it just slightly and really giving it some revs! It wont go anywhere so dont be afraid. Alternatively, take bolts fully out and try hitting it to rotate it with a rubber mallet, rotational force seems to break it free as well. Good luck!
@@tanvirkhan3785 Thank you. I was wondering how to electronic active the valve for testing. I ended up replacing the unit and then it worked great and no more CEL. I was able to push on the lever to see everything mechanical worked before replacing. The solenoid on my must have been bad.
Hey dude, I've got the P0401 code after changing a SAM unit which has died, I've changed the MAF sensor as when idling and taking the connectors off it didnt change idle at all. Still got the code after cleaning the EGR and it moves correctly. Any idea what to look at next? I have cleared the codes and get a minute of driving properly before the car goes back into limp mode and EML comes on. Any help would be appreciated!
That's a good question, I haven't personally had that at all but I would suggest it could be the EGR not opening fully after a quick google? First port of call really is get the car on a really good scanner that can also read live data, otherwise I'm afraid you'll just be firing the parts cannon at it. An autel or snapon scanner can show much more accurate fault codes and live data than a cheapo reader so I would suggest this first and narrow down the problem mate. Can check MAF values etc under load too!
Ah sorry about that! It's on the strut on the RHS as you look at it from the front. It's a little red button, push the bonnet up whilst you press that and it will then lock into service mode at the top!
I think they probably use a different engine, not too sure on that model, however the principle of EGR's is the same. Just the way it attached might be different
Good video! Especially with the trick to get it out I'll be doing this today. I have p0299 (pending) and p2359 code. Not sure if this is the issue but likely needs cleaning anyway. What code did you have whe it went into limp mode can you remember?
@@Enginesetc mine wouldn't budge even when loosened off and 3ngine rev at 5000 RPM so I used a breaker bar as a pry bar and once I broke the seal it came out pretty easy.
hi i have a Mercedes W203 646 engine 220cdi the problem is that it showed check engine light took it to the workshop and diagnosed it and the error was low boost pressure. i have change the boost pressure sensor with the original part number and still the same problem i have also checked to see if there are some air leakages but none is found on the horse pipes and inter-cooler i have also tested the EGR and the ECU they are all fine and still low boost. i have also tried different actuators, EGR and different turbos and Air Mass but still the problem is the same. kindly help
In my opinion you should get a proper smoke test done, to look for any microscopic leaks (I've seen a pinhole in the intercooler on this one which caused issues but wasnt visible to the eye). Then also get a proper workshop to diagnose it with live data etc. they should be able to use the diagnostic machine to see WHY the boost pressure is low, the cause of it not just the symptom. Rather than changing parts and spending money for no reason
Engines etc. sorry to be a downer,,,,,,,,but with that revving going on ,,,,it looks like your driver's side engine mount. may be weak,,,,,,,good video!!~
Hello, Pretty reliable! Chain driven diesel, this engine is used in the vans as well, it will easily go for 250,000 miles if routine maintenance is kept on top of. They are quite noisy and agricultural but they will last for a lifetime
Also how do you release the electrical connector? Do you have to pull the white plastic insert slightly out of the plug, then squeeze the plastic lug in to release ithe whole plug?
Could it prevent the engine starting? Mine cranks but doesn't start. Behaves like it desperately wants to start but doesn't quite do it. Like it's choking.
Just keep trying man, keep doing the trick I mentioned with revving it with the bolts backed out. Also try some lubricant spray maybe. It can be tough but don't get ham fisted and break it, patience and effort will pay off for you
Possibly if it's really clogged up but not in my experience. I'd say look for a boost leak as usually black smoke can come from that. if no obvious signs may be worth having a smoke test done as its cheap enough. I didnt think there was any issues but after a smoke test I had a pinhole in my intercooler appear clear as day

Remove the EGR out connect the sensor after open the ignition don’t start the engine and you can see if is working or not
There is a black cover which you remove and inside there is a spring loaded lever you push it down to open the valve
