For no control over the economy many president’s ranking seems to be impacted by the condition of the economy of during their time in office. Prime example being President Hoover and Van Buren
I feel that it isn't a case of the president having zero control of the economy, because with legislation the president can at least influence the economy, to an extent. I'm not really familiar with Van Buren, but when it came to Hoover, as was said in another Mr. Beat video he either did nothing or he passed legislation that made things far worse. But, it should be said that I'm not entirely familiar with issues of the economy. Mr. Beat, if you see this can you please explain it a bit more?
@@captain_ninja_classic2670 van Buren took the blunt of the blame for economy collapse brought on by Jackson not reinstating the national bank and distributing money to the states (which congress had warned will backfire later on).
@@captain_ninja_classic2670 I do agree it probably got more to do with the relations between executive and legislative branches but for some reason people lean the blame/credit on executive branch. Most likely because it’s just one man that lead the office voted in by majority of nation’s electoral college votes makes it easier than hundreds of people each voted in by the state they represent
@@iammrbeat It definitely is. I feel like that's the main thing that's taught about the President's job in elementary school (also, I remember School House Rock and Brain Pop Jr. bringing it up).
It is interesting because the President was supposed to be a much less powerful figure. Mason, Franklin, and Madison all wanted to limit the powers of the presidency because it was too dangerous, especially in war time argued Madison, who was probably looking back at the failures of the Roman Republic where individuals accrued a lot of power by emergency. The only dissenting voice was of course Hamilton, who was vociferously opposed. As time went on, the office was given more and more powers and responsibilities. This was probably sensible, or at least sensible at first, because you saw reliable men like Washington, who famously despised one-man rule, enraging Madison with some of his decisions that Madison claimed were overstepping the position, and Jefferson, who was against a strong executive, but then in his presidency passed the Fifth Embargo Act where he gave the president the power to execute the whole thing. So essentially Jefferson and Washington realized that the position needed to be a little stronger, even though they were both opposed to a very strong executive, probably realizing it as they went along. Though I am sure they would be horrified by how much power the President has today.
Yeah I wish we took local and state government more seriously and with greater importance. I'm also victim to this, where I don't give it the attention it should get. All sights are on the president, and all the politicians that fight to have their voice heard on TV / Media. Basically the radical ones. That's it.
Really great subject for a video and I have definitely had lots of occasion to think about this. Especially given what presidents in several other countries do. And especially given how often presidents in this country make media appearances that make people think that they do more than their already awesome responsibilities.
This going to be a very busy election year and my recommendation to voters is to pay attention to federal, state, and local elections. The Presidency is important, but so it Congress, and state-level offices like Legislator, Secretary of State, and Governor. This is going to be a dynamic year with the a very real chance to shake things up on all levels of government.
This is somehing america needs to see. Joe does not control the laws that are passed, congress does. Complaining about him not getting a law passed completely ignores the way larger role that congress plays.
@@MateoMans Yep, especially when most of these people don't bother attempting to educate themselves one bit on how this works, often time it actually leaves me confused, seeing people within their 30s-40s blame the pres for something out of their control, it often made me question if I missed or misunderstood something but in reality it's just that these guys didn't even bother to educate themselves lol
What makes a good President is a fun an important question. First of all we don't want someone that has violated the Nation's Laws (Federal, State or Civil). That seems like a very solid requirement.
Mr. Beat, I fukn love your videos, your smart empathetic and humble. You're my kinda guy, and I appreciate your positive contributions to the culture of knowledge and understanding.
I'm an Aussie trying to understand how the US system works. So please correct me if i'm wrong here. The way i'm interpreting the President's role(and the executive branch in general) is that it's the "action" part of the government. As in the president can't necessarily make their laws or decide something big for the country, but they can act on things already decided on by Congress(loosely speaking). They can't technically go to war with a country unless congress decides. But if congress decides to go to war, the President can decide how that unfolds. The President can't decide whether or not someone has broken a law, but if the person has broken the law, they can then act on that person as is within their power. So I see them more as the action/doing side of the government as carrying out what Congress has told them/let them do.
The French Constitution of 1958 is very flexible, with its articles 5 and 20 and the sharing of powers between the President and the Prime Minister. 2 totally different forms of government whether we are in a period of « cohabitation » or « concordance des majorités » (the President has a majority in the National Assembly). For the 1st cohabitation in 1986, many said that the Constitution was not adapted for this political situation and that François Mitterrand should resign… he didn’t and easily won re-election 2 years later against his Prime Minister Jacques Chirac !
What makes a Good President? 1-knowing that he or she is NOT above the law. 2-the ability to reach out to someone who has a different point of view and try to find some sort of common ground..without coming off as an elitist OR an insult comic. Disagree without being disagreeable. 3-The ability to know how the Congress operates and use that to your advantage. This includes knowing the key leaders, parliamentary procedure AND knowing which committee handles certain legislation. POTUS can get the Cabinet Secretaries to serve as his/her liason to the chairs and ranking members of the committees.. A good President needs to be able situations, where his/her party is in control of the Congress or when there is divided government. 4-The ability to hire (and fire) people to do the job required. (Some cases do involve Senate confirmation in hiring.) This ability extends to hiring experts on certain subjects, such as Agriculture or Labor.. However, POTUS should not abdicate his/her authority over a certain part of the government. Also, a good President would feel comfortable having a subordinate "seizing the initative" on an issue (subject to Presidential oversight). 5-To have a loyal VP. Im thinking mainly in the mold of Walter Mondale and George H.W. Bush. 6-The ability to admit when a mistake was made AND to take personal accountability. 7-The ability to speak to the American People and the People of the World. This includes knowing that if POTUS speaks, he/she knows the subject AND he/she is speaking the truth. This extends to being able to handle a press conference and a one-on-one interview, on Fox, MSNBC or the local high school. This includes the ability to talk with people of all races and religions. 8-The ability to share credit for accomplishments, even if its from the opposition party. 9-The President needs to be a positive rolemodel. 10-The President has to be able to make decisions, which might not be popular. But its whats best for the country in the long run. For example, George W. Bush bailing out the Banks during the Great Recession. 11-To be capable of doing the duties of Conmander-in-Chief. 12-To be able to understand economics.

Pretty much, he’s mostly giving military operation orders and begging for votes from congress, but he doesnt DO much. What Trump did, he influenced congress to create, then used his powers to its capacity to make his agenda work, but no president “controls the gas prices” or turns the spigot on the economy. Of course, if a certain plan by the Heritage Foundation was enacted, the president would gain a LOT more power by absorbing his own departments and agencies far closer to himself.
You are a terrific person, commentator, and your history Channel is one of my favorites! I can be assured that you have done the research & you are not spreading lies.

That might make citizens aware of whether the promises being made, and claimed policies that they will enact, are in their control. Bring back civics instruction starting in grammar schools! Please. The chief executive thing is important. The cabinet positions lead each department which has their own agencies and millions work for those agencies. AKA the federal beaucracy. And it’s important because those agencies include NOAA/National Weather Service, NASA, the EPA, FDA, etc. Sadly project 2025 would dismantle many of those agencies.
Responsibility for enforcement is a major power that has been exercised in _not_ enforcing acts of Congress or judgements of the Supreme Court. The ultimate recourse rests with the people, who can refuse immediately to cooperate with active executive malfeasance (and wield the delayed threat of voting out officers whose dereliction of duty consists in inaction).
jimmy carter is my PERSONAL fav president, based of his character, pardoning the dodgers, never dropped a bomb, and his time serving before the presidency. probably one of the few honest, moral presidents.
The President is also the nominal head of their political party, and having or not having a legislative majority matters quite a lot in how their presidency is rated. Clinton did not have a legislative majority for part of his two terms, and arguably his record was what he could get Gingrich to agree to, and vice versa.
I believe that a president must possess at least three of six fundamental abilities and avoid three hindrances/negatives. These abilities include public speaking, critical thinking skills, experience in law and government, willingness to stand up to enemies (and allies if your friends become too extreme), admission of faults, and the ability to defend their beliefs with factual arguments while still being open to hearing the other side. On the other hand, the three negatives that a president shouldn't display are having a mental disorder or illness that hinders their ability to serve the country, being corrupt/seeking to make a substantial amount of money from the job, and selling their country out to their enemies. Although having all six abilities is unlikely to the point of improbability, I believe it is reasonable to expect at least three or four of them. However, any of the three negatives are too dangerous to be tolerated and are significant enough to argue for the impeachment of that president.
Mr beat pls save America with your knowledge!!1 I hope teachers everywhere are sharing your vids. Sad I never saw one of yours in my HS classrooms even tho you were making content 😢
Subscriber from New Zealand 🇳🇿 here, we currently have a 3 party coalition, with the deputy prime minister role being shared by the two smaller parties who made up the coalition. Our elections are 3 year terms. Question, do you think the US major parties would be more successful if they were allowed to team up with independent runners, allowing independents to run in states without the major party needing to campaign there (providing their loyalty and seat is essentially alleged with the major party it aligns with) ??
Thanks for another great video, Mr. Beat. For me, a sign of a great President is to be fully aware of the History of the United States. You can't lead a group of people into the present and future without fully understanding where we've started and what we've gone through as a nation. Also, learning from past Presidents is a good way to understand the shoes that one has to fill for the role.
Um, second in line to the Presidency, nominal head of the Senate, tie-breaking Senate vote, certifies the electoral vote, Vice Chief Diplomat, anything else?
What an excellent video! I, for a long time, knew that a president had limited powers as far as the constitution goes. Congress has a huge and often ultimate say on things that have the most effect on the country. It makes sense because if you gave full power to someone new every 4 or 8 years, this country would be topsy turvy on its head. Congress may be that middle ground between a total tyranny and a civil society. But my issue with congress is there is way too much lobbying. Overall a really educative video that I will share with loved ones who perhaps don’t fully understand the scope of a president.
Not that complicated of a description. Presidential duties are primarily the enforcement of laws from congress and judgements from the judiciary, as well as being the spearhead of any and all international matters. It's evolved over time, as other branches have a say in foreign affairs and president's have become incredibly influential in the legislative bodies as well as other developments, but at the core, that is their job. Manage the country, lead on the international stage. Simple and done.

Oh, that's much better!... yeah - yeah - Fine, I can hear you now, Dimitri. Clear and plain and coming through fine... I'm coming through fine, too, eh? Good - then - Well, then, as you say we're both coming through fine - Good - Well, it's good that you're fine and, and I'm fine - I agree with you, it's great to be fine. [laughs nervously] Now then, Dimitri - you know about how - we've always talked about the possibility of something going wrong with the bomb... The bomb, Dimitri, the hydrogen bomb... Well, now, what happened is - um - one of our base commanders, he had a sort of - well, he went a little funny in the head - you know, just a little - funny, and uh, he went and did a silly thing - Well, I'll tell you what he did, he ordered his planes - to attack your country. Ah - well, let me finish, Dimitri - let me finish, Dimitri - well, listen, how do you think I feel about it? Can you imagine how I feel about it, Dimitri?... Why do you think I'm calling you? Just to say hello?... Of course I like to speak to you! Of course I like to say hello!... Not now, but any time, Dimitri. I'm just calling up to tell you something terrible has happened. It's a friendly call, of course, it's a friendly call - Listen, if it wasn't friendly you probably wouldn't have even got it!... They will not reach their targets for at least another hour - I am - I am positive, Dimitri - listen, I've been all over this with your ambassador, it is not a trick... Well, I'll tell you. We'd like to give your Air Staff a complete rundown on the targets, the flight plans, and the defensive systems of the planes... Yes, I mean if we're unable to recall the planes and - I'd say that, uh - well, uh - we're just gonna have to help you destroy them, Dimitri - I know they're our boys... Alright, well, listen, now who should we call?... Who should we call, Dimitri?... What "The People"? - What? Sorry, you faded away there - "The People's Central Air Defense Headquarters," where is that, Dimitri?... In Omsk. Right?... Yes - Oh, you'll call them first, will you?... Uh huh - Listen, do you happen to have the phone number on you, Dimitri?... What? I see, just ask for Omsk Information - How - ah, um, hmmm... I'm sorry too, Dimitri. I'm very sorry - Alright, you're sorrier than I am, but I am sorry as well - I am as sorry as you are, Dimitri. Don't say that you're more sorry than I am, because I'm capable of being just as sorry as you are - So we're both sorry, alright? Alright... Yes, he's right here. He wants to talk to you, just a second -"

For no control over the economy many president’s ranking seems to be impacted by the condition of the economy of during their time in office. Prime example being President Hoover and Van Buren
True

Supply and demand
Before watching this video, the only thing I fully knew and understood on what the President does was signing bills into law or vetoing bills.
Well that's a pretty important part of their job.
@@iammrbeat It definitely is. I feel like that's the main thing that's taught about the President's job in elementary school (also, I remember School House Rock and Brain Pop Jr. bringing it up).
Yea

Hi Mr Beat, hope you are having a wonderful day!
Same to you!
THANKS

@@MateoMans Yep, especially when most of these people don't bother attempting to educate themselves one bit on how this works, often time it actually leaves me confused, seeing people within their 30s-40s blame the pres for something out of their control, it often made me question if I missed or misunderstood something but in reality it's just that these guys didn't even bother to educate themselves lol

Yeah, pretty much. You got it a lot better than a lot of Americans do.

I'll tell you one thing they don't do: They don't control gas prices.
