Yes. In this specific video I set my tempo to around 35-45bpm so I could play two bars of a 70-90 bpm song. I say this because the rk002 cable will sequence notes up to length of the sequencer (i.e. normal time 1 bar while half time is two bars). It also cannot be played/recorded in song mode. If you record with the RK-002 and no chromatic notes happen, make sure motion sequence is on. The vsample will record your chromatic notes according to the motion sequence of the "speed knob". You'll be able to see the steps on the sequencer and they are indeed quantized.
Also, I cant remember which one, but the rk002 causes samples to start from either the a note or the c note. So if you upload a note that is in f, tune it to either c or a using the speed knob to line it up with a traditional keyboard

With a normal midi cable, you wouldn't be able to play the samples on the vsample chromatically. For example, if you have a piano sample selected, it will play the same note no matter what key you hit. The RK-002 worked around this. It made it so that a midi keyboard can play notes on the vsample chromatically. As far as I know, this used to be the only way to achieve this. The pajen firmware update currently allows a normal midi cable to do this so there really isn't any need for the RK-002 on the vsample. I believe the only other thing it does with volcas is allow velocity to be played on the keyboard when plugged into the volca fm.
Dude this is fantastic, i wish i would also figure out how to use the RK002 with my Volca sample and Keystep pro properly ... chromatic and polyphonic stuff doesnt work in my setup. soo frustrating ...
I was asking about the pajen update because after you get the update, the rk002 won't work anymore. Only a normal 5 pin midi cable will. I do not own a keystep pro but I do own the beatstep pro. For the og keystep, I only had to plug it in and play. For the bsp, I had to plug it in to my computer and set it up using the midi control center program. It required me to change the type of signal being sent out to be compatible with the volcas and then I had to manually set the pads to different midi tracks because the vsample has each sample on a different midi track. Sample 1 on midi track 1, sample 2 on midi track 2 etc. If you haven't done that with your ksp then I would recommend that.
no. it'll map it chromatically to the keyboard automatically. in order for the notes to match up (when you hit the C key the C note will play) you will have to transpose it to C
Amazing man, great jam, i own a volca sampler myself but i used it just for percussive drums when i do loops with a boss rc-30, i feel very limited about the just 4mb capacity it has, i don't know if you felt the same about it?
Thank you. I do have a problem with the limited memory. It makes it so you can only use the volca for about 1 or 2 full songs by itself. I've been experimenting with trying to sample vinyl and use the vsample lol an mpc but to do this it requires a few workarounds. First with vinyl loops being quite long you can usually only fit about 2 loops and a drum set. I found you can squeeze a few more seconds out of it by eliminating the bass from samples that don't need it and lowering the volume of the samples before they go onto the vsample. Lower volume take up less space and you can always raise the gain on your mixer to bring the volume back up. Also single cycle waveforms are handy if you have the rk-002 to go with it. Also I found raising the pitch of my loops before I put them on the vsample helps. When I lower it back down on the unit it produces this grainy lo fi feel. Ultimately, I do wish for more memory to make it a sampler that can do a live set. For now, single jams are still good.
I've been experimenting with my Launchkey Mini and Pajen's firmware and pretty amazed by the new functionality, but I have one issue: the VSample's Tempo setting slaves itself to the Launchkey, where turning the tempo knob does nothing (as was to be expected, I guess). So now I'm stuck at 120bpm. Is there anything I can do to remedy this? I'm sorry, I'm pretty clueless when it comes to MIDI.. this is my first experiment with electronic music hardware...
I'm glad to hear you're a fellow volca player. The problem you're having seems to be with the clock setting on the volca. It comes with the factory global setting to not use the internal clock when plugged in. Try turning on your vsample while holding the FUNC button. This should bring you to the global setting menu. Check to see if step 6 is lit up. If it is, then press it to make it unlit. You should see "CL. In" pop up. Once done, press REC to save the settings. This should make it so the vsample will use its own clock when plugged in through midi. If this doesn't work, then there must be a clock setting on your launchkey mini to stop it from sending a clock signal. Unfortunately, I do not own or have used the launchkey mini so I cannot tell you how to do this. Regardless, I hope this helps and you can continue jamming on.
@@nightcrook9337 thanks! I found the int. clock setting on the volca.. now I just need to find out why the launchkey still won't change its own clock speed when I turn the tempo knob. According to the manual, it should when it's being used as a standalone midi controller..
Wait a minute, you're starting to confuse me. Which machine do you want to be the master, the vsample or the launchkey? When you have two clocks connected by midi, one will be unusable because it'll be slaved to the master. I thought you wanted your vsample to be able to adjust its tempo which is why I had you set it to internal clock. This means that it is ignoring the clock signal from the launchkey. If you want the launchkey to be the master, then change it back to auto. But if you control the tempo on the launchkey mini you won't be able to adjust the tempo from the vsample.
@@nightcrook9337 i wanted the launchkey to control the tempo because I want to make use of its arpeggiator. But when I hooked it up, both were stuck at 120bpm. If you dont have a controller with a midi out port, you could always try getting a midi to usb cable. They're not too expensive. Connect the midi of your volca to the midi jack and the usd to your computer. If you have ableton, load up an external instrument and set the midi channel to the midi channel of your volca. Since the vsample has every sample on a different midi track, you'll have to load up a drum rack first and plug the external instruments in the different slots. I have all this except that cable so I wanna get one if this is all standalone. Also would there be a way to sync it with my MPC Live so I could record into it with these?
The only other piece of equipment I use is a mixer that serves as an audio interface so I can record the audio on my computer. If you don't have one just go from the headphone output on the volca to the mic input on the computer. You should be able to sync it up with the volca. If you have a midi cable, just go from the midi out from the mpc to the midi in of the volca. If you have the rk002 cable in the volca then you'll need a midi to 1/8th inch converter so you can plug the midi into the sync in of the volca. Hope this helps!

I would love to give you an honest answer but I must make clear that I do not own an mk3 nor have I jammed on one. I do own an older version of the launchkey, however. The reason I got the keystep is because at the time it seemed like the most durable and cheapest keyboard with a midi out jack that wasnt one of those $99 starter digital pianos we all have at one point. The keystep is built very sturdy compared to older launchkey. I dont like spending huge amounts of money on equipment so if I had the choice now I probably would have tried out the mk3 seeing how it has a midi out jack and I also do jams with ableton. If you're doing just volcas and maybe ableton I'd go for the mp3. Any other analog equipment you may want to sync then I'd go for the keystep because it has other syncing options. For straight volca jams, I dont worry about the clock. I use the sample as the master. Honestly a more in depth review may be necessary.
Sort of. There's a specific midi cable you can buy for the volca sample called the rk-02. Just google volca sample retrofits to find it. Normal midi cables will only play one sample per note. So like the sample 1 will be played on c and sample 2 on c sharp. The rk-02 makes it so that one sample is distributed throughout the keys. So for example I'd I have a flute sound itll change the pitch of that sound depending on the key I hit. It's the cable that's doing most of the work. You can use any keyboard with a midi out it's just you need the rk-02 cable.
@@wiggesobk it definitely worth it. Ive seen people load single cycle wave forms on to the vsample and with this cable, it turns the vsampl into a synth. it also saves a lot of space for uploading longer samples
sample have no pitch or velocity. It built like a drum sequencer and so what is the purpose of Midi? does it auto detect signals coming in to trigger auto play?
The vsample does have pitch control through the speed knob. By holding func and turning the speed knob you can edit the notes chromatically. You can also motion sequence these changes to create melodies. You can also emulate velocity by using motion sequence on the volume knob. The midi has two major functions as far as I can tell. The first allows you to play samples chromatically by using a keyboard. The rk002 midi cable will be necessary for this. If you have the pajen update, then a normal 5 pin midi cable will do. You can also play the drum samples by using midi pads using this method. The second purpose applies only to the pajen update because it has a setting on there where you can launch any of the stored 10 patterns using midi. Even though the vsample is built like a drum machine, there are many work arounds that allow you to create full tracks using it alone. Hope this helps

May get some zelda samples with it later lol
Thank you very much for the answer!
So the keyboard allowing you to play melodies/chords? If so im hooked on this! also do you need an Arturia Keystep to play the melodies/ chords?
@@nightcrook9337 thanks for the tip! I've ordered the cable, too.
@@wiggesobk it definitely worth it. Ive seen people load single cycle wave forms on to the vsample and with this cable, it turns the vsampl into a synth. it also saves a lot of space for uploading longer samples
@@nightcrook9337 Yeah thats really dope. It's gonna be a lot of Fun.
sample have no pitch or velocity.
This video in particular was made without the pajen update and I used midi to play the samples chromatically
Fucken damn. You got my sub lol
Rk002
Can I hear your work anywhere else ?
Currently the only other platform I have up and going is soundcloud. Soundcloud.com/nightcr00k However i do have future plans for another youtube channel just for releasing beats and plans to expand further into other music streaming platforms. If you're already subbed then you'll be hearing more from me in a short time
