After 1992 the Grunge movement started in full swing and you started to hear more basement style recording and mixing with hybrid mixers, then in the early 2000's Digital mixing came in and the centered stereo imaging of sound was gone. The sound you hear today is very wide compared to the 1980's and early 90's. Also the singing is atrocious it's just over dub loops auto tuned and even Celomyned for each section. If you listen to the Joshua Tree for example the stereo field is very narrow not wide. They did this back then as they had to keep everything to fold to mono as possible due to the crappy stereo systems people had to listen on. So keeping your stereo image centered means the image will not be lost in Mono. I still mix in Mono, record in Mono and set the reverbs just slightly to the sides a bit so the image is not too wide as it sounds like crap when it's too wide.
When i listened to this as a kid i really didn't understand it but now that im older and understand what this song is about now it makes me really sad when i listen to it because it connects with me on an emotional level not because someone broke up with me but because i still haven't found someone in my life that i can think about someone special only to me , it hurts my soul so bad , but on the bright side it has become my one of all time favourites so thank you guns and roses for everything.
