it’s possible to put au effects on the virtual instruments in garageband, without turning them into audio files first, i just tried it with tonebridge, and the routs rock virtual guitar, and it sounds amazing ;)
Yeah, great point Ponk! I’ve used AU plugins on virtual tracks before but not guitar amp sims for some reason? Still getting used to having the full suite of effects and plugins on every track. I smell a follow up video on the power of audio units!!
Buddy I just stumbled across this one video..amazing tutorial thanks again..it’ll even work with my guitar plugged in clean and then merged track..GarageBand has so many features
it’s actually amazing how many things we can do with this free app, i have another idea for the live loops, i just got to a bit on the idea, so i can present my idea in a good way for everyone.
Pete Johns i have not touched it much earlier, but i got an idea the other day, in using it for song writing, that i am going to test out, i’ll let you know more, when i figure out how to use it in the best way, i might make a video on it, for explaining it better. :)
My pleasure. I get so many great tips and ideas from here in the comments. Plus there are so many options for watching videos on UA-cam that if someone goes to the effort of not only watching but leaving a comment, it seems only fitting that I acknowledge them. 🙂
Thank you Olivier! Appreciate you watching, commenting and providing such positive feedback. Hope it's a little warmer in Costa Rica than it is here in Australia right now!
Haha! Once again I was channeling you when I recorded this one! A good workaround while Apple get some better sounding guitars in there! And sorry for any impacts to your recording output!! 😎
Very welcome! Like most things, just s little trial and error helped me discover this little trick. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Pete.
Any reason why when I am following I don't have a merge option? I copy the music and paste but when I try and click on it to merge it doesn't give me that option?
great video, i’m glad you chose to make a video about this, because more people need to see this cool trick, plus doing things to the other digital instruments also makes for some unique sounds, especially instruments we normally don’t hear through the amps, like the Word instruments, i’ll try it with the Chinese drums, and the string ones, it might sound cool
Ponk! So glad to hear from you. I’m pretty sure it was some of your tips that inspired this video. You were one of the folks I was referring to at the end!
Pete Johns glad to be here :) you made some great videos the last few days, sorry for not commenting on them, i will do better in the future :) plus yeah i talked about the guitar trick in the comments in one of your other videos, you made me proud for making this video, i’m always exited when people choose to make a video about the ideas and tricks i give them in the comments, it really makes me feel part of this community here on the internet. I’m glad it was a useful enough idea, to make a video about it. thanks
Definitely! I think at the time I said I wanted to feature you on the channel but you weren’t too keen on being in front of the camera. 😊 Glad I did your idea justice in this video. Keep them coming!!
sometimes i use the eq on the audio track to lover the high frequencies, before putting it into the guitar amps, because the guitars sound a bit to tinny for my liking, plus the amps sometimes seem to boost that part of the signal of the guitar spectrum. :)
Hey there. It’s likely you’re tapping the audio item and not the track icon. This video will help explain things. ua-cam.com/video/ZuKcGbXnzsI/v-deo.html
For more better Sound you can "record" the Guitar Rif Twice (not copy, just record again) and pan one left and one right. It puts many "Fatness" on your guitar. I also recommend to quantize one of them (but not both, that will sound creepy :D )
I have another idea, if you have two devices, you could technically take the output sound from one device, and then with an external audio interface, root it into the second device, if you then play the digital guitar on the first device, and have the audio go through an amp simulator on the second device, that way you can monitor live how the sound will be, once it’s turned into an audio file on the first device, and added to an amp track, with the same settings as the second device.
Wow! As usual, that's some next level thinking Ponk 80! There are some people who do use multiple iOS devices as part of their live rigs using these sort of methods but I start getting confused with the routing!!
Pete Johns the routing part should be easy enough, the source of audio is basically just the speaker/headphone jack or cable, depending on the device, and input is basically just the same place you input your guitar/microphone or line in cable :)
Hi Pete...today I have a bit of a quirky request. As I think I've mentioned before, I mainly record with the internal/MIDI instruments in my iOS app. I ask this with the full understanding that nothing beats the real thing. Which internal guitar/amp/pedal combo would you recommend to achieve a nice strong, but clean sound for lead? I'm thinking along the lines of the guitar solo at around the 2:30 mark of REO Speedwagon's song "Heard it From a Friend" (sorry for the cheesy reference, but I heard the song earlier today and it reminded me of this question. LOL). Every time I aim for a strong sound, I just seem to end up with a loud "in your face" sound. I'd still like to leave some space for the guitar to "breathe" while still sounding strong and loud... if you get my meaning?? Thanks again.
It’s a good question but unfortunately one that I haven’t really explored. I would ask the folks over at the GarageBand Users Facebook group and see what they think - studiolivetoday.com/gbu
There is and many folks have made some quality recordings with the touch guitar, however I'm not super good at it! I would jump over to the GarageBand Users Facebook group and ask some of the pros over there.
This touch guitar thing is buggy as shit. I’ve started editing it piano roll only to found that it doesn’t trigger notes at random, especially anything shorter than 1/8 and also polyphony works at random (most of the time it doesn’t) it is a bit better with acoustic and roots rock presets but the polyphony is still a mess (i can add a second note and it will almost never play), also there’s no way to pitch bend? I’m really disappointed, I really wanted to make use of it.
Yes, the touch guitar itself is well overdue for an upgrade as the sounds and the interface have been pretty much the same for several years. The MIDI note editing can also be quite buggy as you’ve pointed out.
I’m trying this and it isn’t working, when I paste the merged track into the guitar amp track it shows a straight horizontal line (no waveforms) and when you try to play the track there is no audio. Does anyone have any idea?
Pete Johns I had already merged the track and had an audio file. Then I created the amp track, but when I copied the merged track in instead of looking like a duplicate of the first it’s just a flatline. The only thing I’ve done differently from you that I can tell, is I used the autoplay feature on the smart guitar to create the midi track, instead of playing the notes.
Thanks. As I mentioned, was pieced together from a bunch of tips from other users. Definitely a very cool way to get some new sounds. Appreciate your support.
Akshat Anand Pete Johns hey there! But what if I haven't get yet this last update for GB with Apple's AUnits include? Is it possible somehow to download and install it from somewhere? Even just to try them out
You guys need to distinguish between The GarageBand version YOURE USING(which is the computer-Mac version) and the iPad or iPhone version. ALOT OF THINGS ARE DIFFERENT, and unless you let ppl know, they're not going to be able to follow along.
I do try to label all my videos and descriptions with GarageBand iOS and mention this early in videos. Thanks for the feedback. Will continue to work to make it clearer.
Hi there. I recently began having enormous fun with my old iPhone SE's Garageband and found this video incredibly useful! I have a question: how can I include a pedal's effects into the recording? I created a track and assigned it to an amp as you described. I then added a wah-wah pedal and it sounds really nice when I play around with it, but those effects don't seem to remain in the recording.
Hey Paul. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Yeah, unfortunately I haven’t found any way to actually record in wah to a guitar sound afterwards.
Hey Pete: great trick :) What I have been trying to do, but without success, is emulate SampleTank drum sounds via midi with GarageBand. I've tried thtough the external app function, with audiobus as well: no go. Essentially, GarageBand cannot be used as an input... Do you know any way to route the drumtrack in GarageBand to another app, as it can be done in the desktop version ?? Cheers Pete !
is it the midi information from sampletank you are trying to get into garageband? or the sound from the sampletank app you are trying to get into garageband?
Hi ! I did try to re-route a midi drum track from GB to Sample Tank, in oder to use SampleTank drum sounds... Alternatively, I also tried to import a drumtrack recorded in SampleTank with its own drumsounds into GB, but them I had difficulties to synchronise clockwise. It worked only as an audio import, as GB does not seem to accept midi import...?
frantisca i use xewton music studio for direct midi input into garageband, it’s the only app i can get to do that, plus i can sync it with midi clock, that is how i get midi information into garageband. i hope this can help
frantisca it looks like you can email the midi data from sampletank, that way you can open your email, and choose to open the midi file in xewton music studio, remember to have both garageband and xewton running as in the background, and to go to advanced settings in garageband to active midi clock, and to make sure that you turn down the sound in xewton on the instrument, plus be in the garageband drumms when playing back the midi file :)
Oh wow, didnt know this was possible, lol. Its too late now, almost done 100 songs with touch instruments, and only recently got iRig! So i’ll never touch those touch instruments ever again
@@PeteJohnsMusic I've been inspired, lately, by Balthus, the Colombian trio from Bogota. The guitarist uses heavy tremelo all the time, inspired by American sixties rock. Thanks so much. Have been using GarageBand for years and didn't know you could do this.
It’s a pretty cool little hack! I only learned about it a few months ago and finally got around to making a video about it.

Why the touch guitar has so many frets , mine is only up to 8th fret ?
Yeah unfortunately the number of frets is dependent on the screen size of your device.
For more better Sound you can "record" the Guitar Rif Twice (not copy, just record again) and pan one left and one right. It puts many "Fatness" on your guitar. I also recommend to quantize one of them (but not both, that will sound creepy :D )
