  • At CrossFit Generation, there's a notable age gap in the membership: there are those in their 50s and those at least 20 years younger.
    "To me, personally, the 50-plus community really doesn't mean anything because age, to me, is nothing," says Jocelyn Weidner, who co-owns the Pennsylvania affiliate with her husband, Barry. "Everyone is an athlete here."
    Joe Geiner is among them.
    "I smoked for 30 years," the 53-year-old says. "I quit about five years ago, (lay) on the coach for four years and the wife says, 'You gotta get up and do something.'"
    He chose CrossFit Generation, where his children trained for swimming. There, Geiner lost 40 lb. and improved his deadlift from 125 lb. to 350 lb.
    "The results are unbelievable," he says.
    For 51-year-old Bernadette Clune, CrossFit lets her work out alongside her 18-year-old and 25-year-old children.
    "I just absolutely love that I can train like a competitive athlete and I'm not a competitive athlete," she says. "So I continue to just train for the things I'm doing every day."

    Happy to see more older people getting in to Crossfit. I started at 70, did CF1 at 72. Now 77. Regular workouts with some scaling. Was never an athlete in my life. I still love and never going to stop. My goal is to die fit.

    I am honored to be part of the Crossfit community. I started CF in 2009, having never worked out a day in my life. I weighed in excess of 250lbs and had never lifted a Barbell, ran more than 100feet. After Doing a intro (5min of Cindy) and nearly passing out I was hooked! I have never done less than 4 days a week and in the last 5 years no less than 5 days a week. I will turn 64 on December 6th, and have competed in every open competition sense it was started, I am an assistant coach at CF Untamed in Vancouver WA and will never quit. To Christ be the Glory and to his Glory I hope to continue till I am no more.

    All true. I'm nearly 64, started CF when I was 58. Delaying the decay, every day. Still hiking, backpacking, skiing, cycling, and tossing my grandkids in the air. Just wish CF had come around sooner.

      I'm 61 and have been athletic my entire life. Crossfit is part of my overall fitness routine that is supervised by a personal trainer 3x/week. The problem has been recovery. I need a LOT more rest than I did back in the day, and I can only train one body part, like legs, 1x/week instead of two or three if i want to fully recover. And did I mention Advil? LOL Yea, I get on a regimen about once every two or three months to keep the joints moving. Aging is tough, particularly for someone who's been active his entire life and i do wonder sometimes whether or not I should be doing this stuff! By the way, at my gym there is NO ONE my age doing this. i train, for the most part, with people half me age -- or less!

    I start my Crossfit adventure Monday afternoon. I'm 59 years old, have been mostly active since quitting smoking back in 1987. The past few years though I have been plagued with double pneumonia twice and bronchitis three times. Plus two touches of flu. Not fun. I'm not looking for miracles, but I do look forward to being below 200 pounds again, ( only a 10-pound quest). I want to be able to get up from the floor without climbing up, and I want to sit on the toilet without bracing myself. Small goals. I could go back to Golds or some such gym, but I want the classroom camaraderie of the Crossfit Box. I can do this. I just hope that my age is not an issue or a distraction to others.

    I'll be 57 in April, nice to see the 50's package on here. I don't belong to a crossfit club, but I follow the program at home. I really enjoy the workouts. I am ashamed of the time I wasted in my younger years doing isolation workouts. This technology is the only way to go IMO.

    I did not have the same experience at a box I went to. Seemed like the owner gave me a hard time when I scaled or refused to perform a particular activity for my lack of flexibility prevented such, and the pain would be too great. This sure gives me incentive to try somewhere else.

    The guy said it - I feel like part of the gym. I am back at 52 nearly 53. My workout is ugly but I love it. I scale to my abilities as they say as well. Generally that is because I am not strong enough (yet) but I moved from hardly being able to touch my toes and having lower back pain to DLs at 185-200 depending on how I feel, Still working on pullups and cardio but my goal is to be doing full RX loads by the end of the year... BTW its hilarious when I hear someone say "older" people are an inspiration. To me whats inspiring is watching people push themselves hard for no other reason than its fun

    Rule 1 in any fitness program is not to get injured. This is the absolute priority for older people as their recovery time is infinitely longer than for the young ones and it is extremely demotivating. I am not convinced that crossfit would be appropriate for the long run, especially once you get into your later years.

    • @sheriloutokvam3074
      @sheriloutokvam3074 7 років тому +2

      I can understand your thought and I agree with you about injuries. That is a BIG part of the reason I do CrossFit. It's challenging and strengthening, but for me the fact that a trained and certified coach is watching you every minute like a personal trainer would, and correcting your form, there is less chance of hurting yourself - which you could do working out at an unsupervised gym or on your own. Face it we can't see when our knee is turning in or the way we are lifting something could hurt our back, but a coach can see it and correct it. I started at age 52 and have been injury free for 3 years - I've never worked harder in my life and I'll never look back. If one want's to remain flexible and strong, I don't think most seniors can afford not to do it.

    • @Hossak
      @Hossak 7 років тому

      I agree with that you have said. The key is always down to the skills and attitude of the people coaching and supervising. If taught correctly, Crossfit can be a big benefit however there are a lot of people out there who don't know what they are doing or are missing the correct attitude. There just doesn't seem to be a lot of room for error in Crossfit routines as they tap into Olympic style and Powerlifting exercises. If you get those wrong, especially on a long term basis, you can really injure yourself badly and potentially permanently.

    • @dawiepieterse9703
      @dawiepieterse9703 7 років тому +3

      I hate that people will always come around and judge something they have not tried. These peoples lives have changed, for the better. Why not celebrate that fact? And crossfit is a part of the fitness industry, saying crossfit can hurt you is the same as these people can hurt themselves in normal gym, unsupervised. I have seen many trying to live the body-building life, trying to lift heavy weight just for the glory of doing it (and injuring themselves). So at the end of the day, it's all on you. Not the training methodology.

    • @marymccabe2728
      @marymccabe2728 6 років тому +1

      I agree with the part of your statement about not wanting to get injured but I disagree with you about the appropriateness of Cross fit for older people. I am doing Cross Fit at 60 and it has been great. Why limit myself because of a number; I do modify exercises if necessary

    I'm 66 and coach CF Master Classes. I do get a slight chuckle (not being mean) . Most of these men and women in the vid are in their early 50's Good grief ...thats far from being old.... There are issues with "older" generation. After retiring many folks lose a sense of purpose of feeling useful. My classes are CrossFit / Functional Fitness with a good dose of humor. All the men and women in my classes are athletes and are treated with that respect..All of them are "addicted" to the classes. Most of them have physical issues that have to be worked around. Mainly hip, ankle and shoulder mobility. They all sweat they all have improved mobility and vitality. My youngest is 52 and my oldest is 79.5 years old. Bodies don't last forever. When issues arise in that older body of yours. The last thing you want to hear from someone half your age is "Age is just a Number" It is and it isn't ..careful how you use that saying...

    • @Psalm146-2
      @Psalm146-2 4 роки тому +2

      Paul Rink most cultures just expect that when you get in to your 40s and beyond you slow down and live a life of leisure - so when people say “age is just a number” it’s not really intended as an accurate comment but rather it is said because they have come to the realization that they didn’t have to slow down just because they hit 40. A few months of robust exercise rejuvenates the body and mind and it makes them feel like they still have some quality of life ahead of them. I’m 56 - there are times when I feel like age is just a number but there are other times I realize I’m not a spring chicken anymore. But I prefer to dwell on the positive, not the negative.
