You are definitely right the pharmacist market is flooded in Australia I know a lot of people are trying to avoid to study it right now as it not the high paying job it use to be and more like a factory being a pharmacist it a shame
16:26 This story resonated with me so much 😂 I worked at CWH as Pharmacy assistant while studying my undergrad in Health (general). I didn't choose a specialisation because I just didn't know which specific health career to get into. Anyways. I enjoyed working at CWH as I got more experience but not when I first started because I agree with the hierarchy. A pharmacist that I used to work with disliked me for some reason, but two years down the track he started to chat with me and became very friendly (every phm assistants think he was scary). Perhaps pharmacists had enough dealing with inexperienced pharmacy assistant... I liked working in CWH but I don't think the pharmacists enjoyed it that much. As assistants I got to move around the store, where they just stood at the back (sorry just told a long story).
In Italy it is totally the opposite. We have many private family-run pharmacies (even if the holding companies are growing more and more, but here they cannot have more than 20% of the pharmacies within the region) and very few graduated pharmacists. Furthermore, the covid has increased the work and duties of the pharmacist, therefore between tampons and vaccines the pharmacies are understaffed and are desperately looking for pharmacists, therefore the salary is increasing (it must be said, however, that Italian pharmacists are currently the least paid in all of europe)
It’s crazy how the constraints of the field of pharmacy is the same across the globe. I’m here stuck in retail 🥴🥴🥴 i can’t wait to break out. It’s not always greener on the other side but damn, the other side is shining right about now 😅😅😅
Very good information. I was a community pharmacist as well who didn't like the pay and discount model. I work for an online pharmacy now and found I can make a difference expanding this part of the industry but actually get paid as a proper human being for the work I'm doing instead of feeling like a robot dispensing scripts. I'm glad you've given a real Australian perspective. Unless you really love the industry and plan to innovate, iI recommend following Lisa's path and choosing a business pathway unless you have the willpower (and luck) to get into a pharmacy niche.
I feel like pharmacy has changed a lot more recently. With the expanded scope of practice for pharmacists and the government trying to offload GPs, we're seeing independent pharmacies making a comeback. Sure people still want cheap meds at CWH but vaccinations, UTI prescribing, HMRs are stuff that make the independents stand out.
Nz pharmacy is like this too, but Hospital Pharmacy is capped and salary is $20K less than Retail. All of it is really depressing, study something else guys!
As a pharmacist PLEASE talk about Benzodiazepine I know you can't give advice etc but just give knowledge on it please. If I didn't I'd be addicted go Valium. Please. Everyone knows opiates, opioid withdrawal but no one does Benzodiazepine or Antidepressant.
Benzodiazapines include diazapam or valium, temazapam and oxazapam. They are used to induce sedation and help alleviate anxiety. They should not be combined with opioids
just wondering where are you getting the stats from but a lot of people say Pharmacy just horrible in general because of the workload or just healthcare in general
Such an informative video, thank you so much! I just finished a med sci bachelors degree and I applied and got an offer for a master of pharmacy. This has really given me some interesting topics to look into
I believe she hates retail side of pharmacy, because I feel the same. I love science and health care, but retail make it cold and careless. There is a need of reforming in pharmacy!
Cwh pays are ridiculous low, that’s how they keep their scripts price lower than anyone else. I get paid $50/hr as a first year pharmacist, i don’t think it’s too bad if u really like ur job and find joy from helping patients
May I ask for ur advice? I am a freshman at college and majored in English. Our grading system to get into pharmacy school is based on our final year of high school. 98% and above is the grade required to get into pharmacy. I got 93.6% and the only way for me to get into pharmacy was through a private university which costs a lot like thousands of pounds. I have always loved science(biology to be accurate) and expected a much higher mark. However, when I got my mark, I was devastated and thought that it was a sign that it wasn’t my destiny to get into a medical field. So, I decided to switch mindsets and get into English. Now don’t get me wrong, I love what I am studying and because English is my second language. I am thinking about becoming a translator. But I just can’t forget the medical field I miss biology and have always dreamt of wearing the lab coat. I sometimes feel like I sold myself short and gave up on my dreams. I just need a sign that I made the right decision. I apologize for my long comment.
It’s ok! Life will take you down interesting lanes that might not quite make sense until later on. Just trust in your own path - it’s a lot more enjoyable that way than constantly doubting yourself too (take it from me - I’d know!).

pharmacy is safe, get qualified , get a license to practice , earn stable money. The problem with such high entrance scores is that you are getting elite talent into a profession that doesn't necessarily require elite skills. And i would speculate thats probably one of the reasons you left the industry your talents are better utilised elsewhere
Agree with everything you have said. Only one thing i find weird and i think you have been conned by your previous owner. You said you was pay really well first yr @ $28 in 2015. I was paid award rate (lowest you can get) and $29 in 2013. And i worked for cwh! You said some pharmacist was paid $22. Thats student rate based on award

Where average salary required to run a family is around 3000 aud in aus ,,i am from india and i am thinking of becoming a pharmacist in aus please guide if it is worth it ,, because in my country there is no future for pharmacists
Hi Simone, thanks for your question! If you mean converting an overseas Pharmacy degree to an Australian qualification, it's best for you to look into official gov sources (as my understanding may be out-of-date or inaccurate). Here's a gov link you might find useful: www.pharmacyboard.gov.au/registration/overseas.aspx Hope this helps!
Thank you, as a Year 12 graduate this year who has no idea what i want to do as a career and was considering pharmacy, this really helped me.
im going to uni to do pharmacy next year!

It mess with your serotonin level in your brain and cause addiction

Addiction with benzodiazepine. It is difficult. It does not have any affects after a couple of days using it.
