    The idea is foriegn visitors should come to the US and tell us how to run or country. It's rude and not their business. By the same token it's rude and inappropriate for Americans to go abroad and tell people how to run thier county. It all comes down to good manners and etiquette.

    People don’t want anyone trespassing partially because if they get hurt they could try to sue the land owner. It’s crazy.

    If you are unsure on whether or not to tip, go ahead and ask someone. Either a worker or another patron. When I worked in a restaurant I never thought it was rude for someone to ask if it is customary to tip. You can simply say something like,
    " Excuse me, I am visiting from from (country). Is it customary to tip in this situation?".

      Yes you're right, but when they say that, they mean the US as a nation, not the land, has little history compared to European countries. Also technically the land's history doesn't match the history of the people who lives on that land today, you're are "all" descendants of European immigrants. I get that usually this is a way to be rude to Americans but i think denying and get offended is as childish as trying to be rude. I like to think that we shared the "same" history for thousands of years and then as a branch of a tree US took its own path, so it's incorrect to say you don't have history, it's just the same of ours until 1492, but somehow you feel disconnected from that

    In person absolutely no one talks about politics, as soon as someone brings it up everyone else tries changing the subject. People do it online because they need to vent and they don’t have to worry about upsetting their father or sister or a friend. We talk about sports, men talk about ALL the different sports, we talk about cars, we talk about vacation and we talk about how our family is doing and discuss the elderly in the family. How your parents are doing and what you’re doing to help them is a big topic. The also talk about work and talk about church, what the pastor said that weekend and the older ladies talk about their bible study class and which of the other 80 year olds upset them in class. We also talk about our vegetable gardens, pets, and our children’s sports and achievements. My sister still believe I believe everything she does because I keep my mouth shut but she’s way too liberal abstract and I’m very traditional yet open minded.

    Tips are great dont change it. I have relatives that get tips for a living. They dont want it changed. The restaurant can keep the food prices down for you and you get good service. The servers make more with tips than they would make even if they got higher wages.

    • @blanketstarry7725
      @blanketstarry7725 Місяць тому +1

      I say this all the time. People like to say (imagine snarky voice) "well, if they were paid a living wage...blah, blah, blah" ...Servers can make A LOT of money with tips, far more than they would with a "living" wage. I don't like how tipping has permeated other parts of life, like coffee shops, boutiques, and really any place that uses electronic payment apps to sneak in a tips option (as if the app just came with it), but traditional tipping is fine with me.

    Tipping was not a government invention nor was it invention an invention of businessmen. It was a creation of the aristocratic class. It started as an acronym t.i p. To insure promptness and as a gratuity(to the lower and working classes)

    • @rdjftw2531
      @rdjftw2531 Місяць тому +3

      The acronym explanation is an urban myth. "Tip" comes from old English slang meaning "to give".

    • @occamraiser
      @occamraiser Місяць тому +1

      No it isn't. The word tip has a long etymology, It also has other meanings including a piece of advice (a racing tip - hence hence the word tipster) a tip being a hint, a bit of free advice, a clue, a favour.....THAT is the origin of the word not some made up politic-point self-serving acronym. Etymology is too important to let people propagate made up crap.

I still get offended with how little women wear and then walk around and complain "Why are all you objectifying me?". The gender that is wearing the least amount clothes is complaining about getting objectified? Really?

    I know quite a few people who prefer to work for tips because they make more money that way, and it’s take-home cash. I know that’s not generally true, but it is certainly true for quite a few people. I used to work in service jobs and loved the good money from tips.

    I was a server in a restaurant when I was 16. It was an after school job 3pm-10 pm. I was paid $2.13 an hour. Standard server pay. I made $350-400 dollars a week in tips. No way I could make that if I got higher pay and no tips. Some make over $1,000 week in tips in fine dining restaurants.

    • @occamraiser
      @occamraiser Місяць тому

      Tipping is unnecessary and a virus. Pay your staff enough and a tip becomes a modest mark of appreciation from a happy customer, not a potential insult if it isn't 'enough'. No one expects airline pilots to work for nothing and live off tips, no one should.

  • @colddarkmatter1731
    @colddarkmatter1731 Місяць тому

    Tipping is good here. Motivation for better service and the servers can hide their money from taxation. They can work 3 hours a day and live well. Mostly college students and part time workers. The government demands so much revenue from the restaurants. The government wants big corporations to move into their cities. So they keep the permits expensive. Hard for small owners to open stores. Low wages help them. It's corporations vs small businesses. And government favors corporations

    If you ever go to Oregon they have no sales tax there. Stock up all the electronics you can so you won’t be paying both state taxes as well your own country’s duty taxes for overseas purchases if they do such a thing.

    • @oregonchick76
      @oregonchick76 Місяць тому

      I'm an Oregonian and have family in other states. I remember planning a visit and having them ask me to buy electronics and furniture for them just so they could avoid the sales tax (and have me deliver it when I arrived, of course). And some of them would visit at the end of summer and do all of their school shopping for the fall while they were here. It's annoying when you're only saving a couple of dollars, but with big ticket items or if you're buying a lot of clothes or whatever, it can be worth the hassle.

  • @captainbryce1

    Americans talk about politics when they are debating politics online, or having a political debate with their friends/family. However, you do not generally engage with strangers on these subjects. That's not only considered rude, but it can lead to conflict. When you're in public, you tend to stick to small talk (weather, traffic, food, clothing, music, sports, travel, nature, etc). Those are considered light topics that anyone can have a conversation about. But you would not discuss things like voting/the election, the President, abortion rights, LGBTQ rights, immigration, gun control, foreign wars, or religion. These are touchy subjects that are likely to irritate someone who doesn't know you very well because they are likely to lead to strong disagreement. And no, it doesn't matter if you are in a bar or a restaurant, or on a subway, or in a hospital waiting room - the same issue exists. These are topics that a fully sober person might be just as inclined to fight about as a drunk person.

    I don’t know what kind of people this lady knows, but it’s entirely possible for people to discuss politics and religion without going into rage over it. Maybe it’s my region-the south-because good manners and being civilized adults make entirely possible. Certainly there are always boneheads who have no self-control and will “go there”, but I’ve found that it’s not very difficult to say something diffident if the other person seems like they may be more invested in their point of view than you are, and just steer the conversation elsewhere.
    She seems to think that Americans are a lot of cavemen or something.

      Depends on where you get the food, too, because there can definitely be taxes on restaurant food, food delivery services, etc. A lot of tourist destinations use taxes on common tourist activities (eating out, staying in hotels, renting vehicles, etc.) for their municipal or county revenue.

    I don't agree. By definition, tips are voluntarily given without obligation. More and more business' expect you to tip them - for just doing their job. I think, it takes advantage of peoples generosity, and will end up hurting these business' when fewer people can afford to use them. I was a waiter during college, and my hourly wage barely covered my taxes. Servers today, are paid the same as I was back then.
