    if you want to add a little heat upstairs perhaps you could do what they did in old farm houses. Cut a couple holes in the floor and install floor grates.

      Brilliant thinking! We actually do have flow grates like that all around the perimeter. I’m going to add a couple computer fans to help draw more air up

      I almost said at the beginning, “John said I’d figure out what this video would be about so here’s a bunch of random tasks with his permission” 😆 Glad you liked it! Hope you’re well!

    If you want more heat upstairs. Maybe cut a hole in your floor the size of a cold air return vent. Install a vent there. Can’t remember if your ceiling downstairs stairs is exposed or not. Start with 1 and if you need another add it. As we know heat rises and this gives you a natural opening instead of using fans. You could also install a fan in the vent. We did this in an old house we had 20 yrs ago to get more heat to the upper level.

      It’s great thinking! We do have perimeter vents around the cabin. I’ll have to give some updates about it as we go. I purchased a clip on fan for the stairwell which has really helped move warm air up. And I bought a couple 12v computer fans I want to run at the vents in front of the wood stove as well the warm air hits there first. Hoping it’ll help circulate the warm air better. The single fan in the stairwell has seemed to help a lot

    Hello guys from NC....yes enjoyed the video, thank you. Love the height of your dog kennels. Nice trail markers.
    Always like seeing wood chopping, stacking, burning....lol...crazy I know but when I was young grandparents had wood burning stoves, my parents heated with oil. Like the smell of wood stoves and fire places.Smart to make wood holder to stack inside...that will help keep it clean.Also my first seeing the basement since ya painted...like the rug and new 2 kittens....so cute and sweet. Katie your plants are nice to have inside...I don't have to much of a green thumb...well guys can't hardly wait to see next week video. Stay warm and safe......

      You know it!😊 they spend 50/50 between downstairs by the fire and upstairs, in the loft, on our bed. We’re hoping to make book shelves shortly that can second for them to have space on the main floor away from the dogs, as a couple of them have some drive to catch em 😆

    You know if there was two registers (vent holes through the floor) on each end of the cabin, the heat would go up the center and cool air would go down the ends for better heat circulation.

    • @northstaroffgrid
      @northstaroffgrid  Місяць тому

      We actually do have registers around the perimeter of the cabin. I added a 12v fan in the stairwell and it seems to help draw hot air up better than before. Cold finds a way though, 😆

  • @wobdeehomestead
    @wobdeehomestead Місяць тому +2

    I bet if you insulated those basement walls the cabin would be much warmer and save firewood.

    • @northstaroffgrid
      @northstaroffgrid  Місяць тому

      Definitely understand why the previous owner did so, just wish he had done it smarter than he did causing is to rip it out. We’ve definitely been talking about it though. Such a heat suck!

    Great video, watched it while working out this morning. I foresee your channel growing big time. I know it’s not easy work but I’m sure everyone watching is so happy for you both (including your furry companions). Totally digging that Eddie Bauer jacket btw bro. Take care guys!

    • @northstaroffgrid
      @northstaroffgrid  Місяць тому +1

      Thank you! I hope so, like you said it is effort but I’ve enjoyed it. I like being creative and I hope my editing/filming can get better and better over time.
      Haha, the jacket is starting to get holes. I tried some patches and they fell off after getting wet. I just bought a cheap work jacket I’m hoping to layer over it so it doesn’t get even more destroyed 😆 We’ll see how it holds up. Have a great week! Talk to you next week!😊

    Gooood morning, Matt & Katie! I was thinking of you guys with all this snow we've been getting. Im completely wiped out from all the snow removal. Over here, we've got close to 42" total. I'm on the other side of the lake, so I get the lake effect snow. 🤪
    Love the trail...it's beautiful out in the woods with all the snow. I went walking out in my woods the other day and wished I had worn a helmet. I'm sure you understand why. 😂 Anyhow, good to see you guys getting along over there. Stay safe and warm.

    • @northstaroffgrid
      @northstaroffgrid  Місяць тому +1

      Luckily we don’t really have a driveway so our snow removal efforts have been minimal. We’ve only had a little over half of what you have so far. We had frigid temps for a few days this past week but now it warmed up to right about freezing. Getting drizzle currently. The ebbs and flows of winter.
      Happy to say the trail has been keeping very nice. If we do get some snow I try and snowshoe it right away. Getting fit just snowshoeing back and forth on it, haha. You stay safe and warm too! Have a great week!

    My childhood home was a 100 year old farm house that did not have heat in the upstairs, but what they did was put in registers so the heat downstairs could reach each room upstairs and provide some heat. This could be an option to maximize heating your main floor. 👍❤️

    • @northstaroffgrid
      @northstaroffgrid  Місяць тому

      It’s brilliant thinking! We actually do have some registers for just that reason around the parameter. I just purchased some computer fans to see if I can draw more heat up through them. Hoping it helps some

    I live in nova scotia canada i use a 12x24😂 shelter logic for my wood by your propane tank looks lile a good spot i put 2 logs on each side of ground flap. For wind and i used 12 inch spikes inside for legs!!! No issues yet perfect for wood and price is right its a good product and company replaces any default s free of charge its a win win for wood equipment ect....👍👍💪 also there is foam board notched out for 2x2 so you can insulate basement walls that block wall will suck most of your heat up!!!!there 4 x 8 sheets cement nail them on or ramset it

    • @northstaroffgrid
      @northstaroffgrid  Місяць тому

      We’ve been talking about a shelter logic for random equipment. That’s a smart idea! We’ve also been talking about board insulation for the block. We can see why the last owner had installed it. Just not doing it like they did. In a previous video we had to rip out the old insulation due to mold and mildew from lots of water intrusion/humidity. There were then carpenter ants making nests in the foam too. It was a real mess. I’ll do some more research and think on it. It’s just so hard to get boards back here now as we have over a half mile walk

    • @karlaalders644
      @karlaalders644 Місяць тому +1

      The outside wall is best to insulate on block walls but u check it out for sure and a jem in the off grid world for info is the.boss of the swamp ! Utuber!!! Nice man lots.of.tips he.is the best my opinion !!! He made a.awsome.icebox!!!! Check him and.lori.out!!! U guys doing a.awsome.job👍👍💪🍻

    • @northstaroffgrid
      @northstaroffgrid  Місяць тому +1

      I’ll have to check it out. But yes, my research has shown outside is a good option. We just have so much exposed and not under ground so I’ll have to learn more about that

  • @tomrichardson3107
    @tomrichardson3107 Місяць тому

    Maybe you should have notched the shelf boards so stuff won't fall off the back??

    • @northstaroffgrid
      @northstaroffgrid  Місяць тому +1

      Definitely a good idea. Because I had such small boards it wasn’t a thought. Since I do have the red pine boards I plan to update some of the shelves, maybe I’ll think about doing that. Or making insets between the framing to make it run to the back. Dropping cans and things could get annoying. Haven’t had any issues with the shorter shelves so far but we also haven’t packed it full as I’ve wanted to revisit it. Otherwise maybe even a lip at the back would be helpful. Thanks for the idea!

    why don't you have a burn barrel?

    • @northstaroffgrid
      @northstaroffgrid  Місяць тому +1

      For trash or vegetation? In Minnesota it is illegal to burn trash. But a burn barrel is a great idea for all the tree matter!
