Don't forget, leave us a comment with your question/s for a Q&A video we plan to film! We know we have a lot of new followers so we felt like this would be a great way to get to know us better! Cheers!!
How old does a sled dog need to be before pulling a sled? Will you eventually be breeding the dogs? How many dogs makes a standard team? How do you choose the lead dogs? I would love it if you could show how you train them. Also, what Veterinary care do these dogs need? Vaccines? Dewormers? Screening for dysplasia and other diseases? Do you spay neuter? What needs do these dogs have that differ from non working dogs. It's a lot, I know, but you asked!! 😅😅😅
Maybe address how you handle waste and sewage off grid, how do you handle emergencies/medical care, any plans for gardens, how do you ensure personal safety, how did you acquire property, do you still have to follow township/county codes, etc...just trying to think of some things.
For the Q&A. 1. It seems like you guys have some land out there. How much do you have, and have you guys talked about some ways you can use it best? 2. How long do you see yourselves living in that location? Have you considered what the next 10 years looks like? 3. What fun things do you guys enjoy doing to pass the time?
Love the pantry organization. We noticed that your wood stove is identical to ours. For a time saving suggestion you could drag your wood sled into the basement to save stacking time. Also, if you notched your pantry shelves you would gain 4 inches … we did a similar project. Each square inch matters.
Definitely a great stove! Good thinking on the pantry. Maybe in the future we’ll revisit that with wider boards. The current boards and brackets wouldn’t really give much more notching unless we could fit another length along them on the bracket
I would have taken the time to cut the bottom board out to go around the beams and had the extra 3 or 4 inches of shelf space to push jars right to the back. Seven shelves by 3 ft adds up to a lots of space.
I love how you guys keep yourselves busy with DIY projects. I’m a foodie so my favorite part of the video was when we got the tour of the food stuffs in the pantry. Edit: oh I forgot to tell you guys that I drove from South Georgia to Boston on Monday and Tuesday. Been in Boston the last 3 days. I’ll be driving to Maine today. It’s been an awesome journey so far.
Thank you! Hopefully you enjoy this week’s episode coming out tomorrow, I cook up one of my favorite breakfasts! We’ll see if it’s foodie enough for you though 😆 That’s quite the drive! Did you get to enjoy any time at the beach? We’d love to do a NE trip at some point! Currently I have plans for a bikepacking trip in Vermont next fall with some friends. I’ve never spent any time up there. Beautiful country!
@@northstaroffgrid I arrived in Bar Harbor yesterday and stayed the night. Everything was closed so I decided to move on. It’s going to be super cold this week. I’m excited.
@ hit -22 this morning without the windchill. Currently -11, should it the -20s again tonight. Windchills to -50. Brrr dude, can’t keep the cabin warm enough! Hope you have an awesome time!
Definitely going to investigate best way of doing so in the future. We were planning to do a French drain outside and thought about doing foam board under the ground against the block too we’re thinking
We do have two floor grates in front of the wood stove as well as 4 others around the perimeter of the cabin. They do help for sure. And the fan in the stairwell helps even more. I should explain the frustration more in a video as my only complaint is when it’s really cold outside. Negative temps. When it’s 20s F or warmer, it gets too hot in the cabin with the wood stove going
Good to see you two and the puppies doing well. Lots of snow and cold here in WV. I like the saying "Mind the gap between the Plan and Reality." Now that you've been full time at the cabin, has there been a "didn't see that one coming" moment and a "that went just like we planned" moment? Cheers!
Awesome questions! Look forward to thinking on it and answering in the q&a video! We have a winter storm advisory for today into tomorrow. I’ll to 8”. We just had a long bit of cold. It warmed up to 20 today 😊 Did you see my WV ski camping video on our channel ?
@@northstaroffgrid I'm from Pittsburgh originally. Before my grandfather got there back in 1909, he spent a couple years with his dad who had come to the US in 1902. They were working as lumberjacks in what is now the Mon Nat'l Forest near Richwood, where my great-grandfather was killed in a logging accident. Grandpa paid $5.00 for a mass and burial plot and then traveled to Pittsburgh. About 5 years ago I put a grave stone down for Anton. We've been to that area a number of times. Once, my wife and I got general directions for where we think the lumber camp was where Anton died. We are not experienced hikers and we soon found out just how dense that forest is! So we stuck to the forest road and just enjoyed the scenery. Looks like you had perfect weather for winter camping!
Whoa! That’s super neat and interesting! Cool to know some of that history! And very cool of you to put a headstone there! The history of this country is so fascinating! Where we live now was a lumberjack mecca in the 1800s/early 1900s! One of the trails on the property was an 1800s logging road. I’d love to learn more!
I love SkiPulk! I used their stuff for both of my winter ultras. I went with a rope setup versus a pole setup so I could easily access my gear. Since that course was very flat, it wasn't an issue with keeping it from hitting your heels, but even when I trained on hillier trails, I would just pull it in front of me on the downhills, and occasionally hop on my gear and ride it down. I used a bungee cord in the middle of my rope to absorb the tension and keep it from feeling jerky. Worked great! Question: What does your shower / bathing / bathroom situation look like without traditional plumbing?
Yes, they’re great! I’ve always had big plans for winter camping trips. Haven’t done much over the years. Hoping to get out soon! Great idea with the bungee! We have 100 feet of gain from the truck to the cabin so having rigid poles is definitely helpful in that regard. I’d love to train for the Arrowhead at some point! I’m sure learning what gear I’d prefer for something like that would come with training. Poles definitely make access the sled much harder. Luckily the belt with carabiners makes it a little easier to unhook but still can be very annoying. Great question for the Q&A! We’ll see how many people are grossed out! 🤣
I really enjoy your channel. I have two questions it that is ok 1. Will you be making you path to cabin car friendly? 2. What are some to do future projects you are planning Thank you
Hello from Pa … love your videos !!! I’m a very organized person so doing the kitchen was wonderful to see !!!! My question is what does the rest of your living space look like ??? Also do you have an outhouse ???? Thank you !!!
Do you have any vents in the basement ceiling? This would allow the denser cold air to flow down into the basement and naturally push the warm air up your stairwell. I did this in a previous home and it worked great.
Not sure if you wanted this answered in the Q&A video but I’ll maybe still touch on it there. But yes, we have 6 perimeter registers around the cabin , two of which are directly in front of the wood stove. The fan in the stairwell has helped immensely to move air quicker. It really only becomes a problem in below 0 F temps. Teens/low 20s are perfection for a rolling fire all day. Around freezing and up, we only run a fire at night before bed or it’s too hot in the cabin. It’ll stay in the 60s all day with a fire only before bed/slow burning overnight
Goood morning you two! 😊 Hope you are staying warm over there. Been in the single digits here but starting to climb back up into the 20s today. I have that same black sled and could never figure out a good strapping system, so thank you for sharing what you did. I'm going to do the same thing. Good luck on the organization Katie. You sound like me, "where do I start?" 😂 Don't stress over it though, it's an ongoing process. Your pantry looks great 😊. Matt, you going to have enough wood to get you through til spring? Well, need to go shovel snow. Have a good week and hugs and smooches for the doggies😊
It warmed up here a bit too. 5-8 inches expected today into tomorrow. We’ll see what we actually get. We woke up to about a quarter inch this morning. Glad the strap system could be helpful for you! Let me know how it turns out or if you have any questions! I’m glad Katie is better at the organization because I’m not so much 🤣 Talking about firewood in the q&a video is great for this question, unless you have another question you wanted to ask for that video?😊
I just want to make sure you have enough firewood. You can keep it for the q&a 😉 Katie is better at it than me too. I may have to have her come help me get organized 😂 😂
We were talking over curtain colors last night😆 I’d like to build out some drawers and possible put doors on in the future but it’ll take no snow to be able to get supplies in for that. Hopefully adding curtains soon.

Lots of great information here. We’ll try and get to a lot of this in the q&a. We may need to do a sled dog specific video too!

@ haha, not out of the ordinary up here. Especially this time of year. Looks like 3 days of it. It’ll be a high of 14 on Wednesday, beach weather! 😂
Adding insulation on your basement walls would help with heating since they are below grade. That LOPI wood stove is a quality wood stove.
Definitely going to investigate best way of doing so in the future. We were planning to do a French drain outside and thought about doing foam board under the ground against the block too we’re thinking
put a floor grate on the floor upstairs that will help with heating up there--1 larger one or a couple of smaller ones
