Black & Decker 4-Slice Toaster Oven Review

  • Hi Guys, today I’m reviewing the Black & Decker 4-Slice Toaster Oven. LINK TO Black & Decker Toaster Oven Newer Version: amzn.to/2HVKod8 . It can bake, broil, toast or warm food. It’s 8.5 inches tall, 15 inches wide and 10 inches deep. The cord is 21 inches long. The unit is stainless steel with a glass door and the handle is comfortable.
This unit is compact and great for smaller kitchens. It works well for toasting and reheating food that would turn soggy in the microwave. I’ll make toast, reheat leftovers and bake frozen food to test the unit.
I’ll toast 2 slices of wheat bread. You can fit 4 slices horizontally. I’m using the lightest setting. When your food is done, you’ll hear a ding and the indicator light will go off. It’s been 3 minutes and this is what the toast looks like. It’s lightly toasted and pretty even. This is the other side and as you can see the bottom is more brown than the top. The lightest toast setting works best for regular bread. Now I’ll toast an everything bagel that was frozen. I defrosted it in the microwave for 20 seconds and cut it in half. I’m toasting the bagel using the medium setting which is half shaded in. This is after 3.5 minutes. It is brown so if you like it this way, use the medium setting. For me, I’ll stick with the lightest setting. Frozen waffles. After 2 minutes 30 seconds on the lightest toast setting, there’s not much color but it is toasted, it’s crispy and it’s done. So this is a good setting for waffles. Corn muffins on the medium toast setting. They’re toasted pretty evenly. These are leftover meatballs and french fries. You do not want to heat up fries in the microwave because they will be soft. Do not use foil on any part of this unit. I’ll heat it up at 200 degrees. After 5 minutes, the fries are hot. If you’re heating up a large piece of fried chicken or any large food, cut it in half and separate it so the inside heats up as well as the outside. The meatballs are warm outside but not hot inside, they will take a few more minutes. If I had cut them in half, they would be done at the same time as the fries. The fries are crispy on the outside and very hot and soft inside. 5 minutes is really quick to have crispy hot food that would otherwise taste awful from the microwave. Next I’ll bake frozen fish fillets and frozen mozzarella sticks. 425 degrees, bake, 20 mins. The glass is hot and the handles are cool. The top of the unit is hot. Many of us store a loaf of bread on top of the toaster and forget about it. I’ve done that and had melted plastic, so it’s a good idea not to store anything on top of the toaster oven. After 20 minutes, nice and golden brown. The mozzarella sticks are bursting so they could’ve been taken out a few minutes earlier. The tray will get stained very quickly especially if you don’t wash it frequently. A good scrubbing will get it clean.
The Black and Decker toaster oven did a good job of quickly toasting, baking and reheating. The food was crispy and hot. It’s compact, efficient and affordable. I hope you found this review helpful. Please subscribe and I’ll see you next time. Thanks for watching.

I know your video was done 8 years ago but, it's still very relevant! I just received this very toaster displayed in the video today 6/09/2024. I purchased the same oven 3 years ago, didn't read the instructions or look at a UA-cam video and didn't even know where the drip and mess pan were supposed to go. Today, I decided to look at a video, and yours was the one. Eureka!, who knew that following instructions would give you more clarity (he said with a side look). Thank you very much for your clear instructions on how the the toaster is assembled and it's working instructions!

Wow, thank you so much!!! Finally a proper review. With not only "i like this" but how it actually works. I have the 6 slice version of this. While of course accounting for some minor differences, the general idea of how to use and how it works is the same. Thanks for an informative review!!

You are wonderful! No instruction manual came with this and I was getting so frustrated I was going to take it back! Thanks to you now I know how to use the oven. Why the manufacturer could not take a little of their profits to create an instruction manual of a few pages is beyond me. Using the oven may seem intuitive when you know how to do it, but when you don't know anything (never had one before) all you have as an option is trial and error. For a guy like me, this is very frustrating. So much experimentation just to get a piece of toast, and then I did it wrong. I had the temperature set at 350 degrees and when the toast finally was brown, I turned the time clicker all the way to "On all the time". Imagine my shock when I came into the kitchen 3 hours later and saw the heat coils red hot! YIKES! In a world that has been dumbed down so much, how do they expect a single guy like me to know intuitively how to use the stupid thing? Geez. Thanks so much. (to prove I am not just incredibly stupid, I am a programmer and system design engineer).

@@favorite3424 Nope. No button. Apparently you’re supposed to be able to spin the knob past off to a stay on setting, but mine simply cannot be forced to go that far, so I just put it on 30 minutes then wait 10 or 20 minutes and spin it back to 30. 🤷🏼‍♀️

@@bookcat123 I just bought a used one that was rarely used, and if urs is like mine (the one in the video) once u rotate the button to the highest time, the next click is stay on. If that does not work, u should call the manufacturer. I am sure they will replace that for u, even if it'snot under warranty. Companies do not like when their products do not work as they are advertised, especially brand named companies.

I love that you tested so many things with this oven! You did not say how well done the BOTTOM of the bagel was! Some toaster ovens have a bagel setting so that the bottom will NOT cook as much as the top, making it easier to hold and not as crunchy. The only thing that bugs me about it is that the tray/grill does not slide out, automatically, with the door, forcing one to use an oven mitt to pull out the tray.

I can't say thank you enough! I'm newly on the Keto diet and I'm trying not to use my Microwave oven, which is a little difficult when you have to prepare most meals every day from scratch. My twin bought me a Toaster oven last week, but it has been a challenge "converting" from the quick microwave to toaster oven. I especially wanted to know how to re-heat food and you've explained perfectly. Unfortunately, I tried baking a 3-minutes Keto Cheddar Bay biscuit in the toaster oven...after 20 minutes the outside was overdone, the inside under-baked, and the mug was so burnt it took an entire day to soak so I could wash it, so I have to continue experimenting. 😕 I didn't know how to re-heat food, so have been still (grudgingly) using the microwave. I get that microwaving is not the healthiest thing to do, but unless wonderful persons like yourself post helpful clips like this, or I can find UA-camrs who bake using a Toaster oven, it is a real challenge to switch. So again, my grateful thanks!

Good review. Just got this exact toaster. I really like how you demonstrate things. For some of us, this is the best way to understand. So, if I'm not mistaken, it's called a 4-slice because it can fit 4 slices of bread? Just to be clear, the "warm" function is the one to use for reheating cooked food? Reheating is the main reason I need the toaster. Is it safe to reheat food in a regular ceramic plate as you would if using a microwave?

Set it 100 degrees higher. It's a known fact that the temp markings are 100 degrees off on this oven (you can use your oven thermometer to check in your own oven if you like). If you need to cook an item at 350 for 10 minutes, set this oven at 450 and it will cook in 10 minutes.

If the top knob is set to toast, skip the knob in the middle then use the bottom knob to select the light medium or dark toast icons. You would think Black+ Decker would have a manual and maybe a recipe book but I guess power tools are their forte, not ovens.

I have this exact same one. Can you use the bake option for baking stuff like cookies cakes etc. Cuz majority of the time when baking cakes etc I usually will put it on the regular temperature like 350 or 400 etc but then sometimes it doesn't come out the same
Then sometimes when I put it on the bake option it doesn't do anything

I noticed that your video cut out for a second when you were going to demonstrate turning the timer knob to 10 and then rotate it back to your desired time. My knob doesn't move backward so I'm wondering if that's why you cut out that section.

I noticed when you had it on bake that the top and bottom heating elements were both on. That would be baking and broiling at the same time. My air fryer Toaster Oven does that and burns everything on the top

Does it adjust in only 25 degree increments , or can I gradually adjust to add 5 , 10 degrees as I see fit ? Thanks!

Question: The middle and bottom dials "clicked" when you moved them, but, I didn't hear a "click" when you turned the top dial. Does it "click" or not? If not, that's a potential problem, because it might move to a different temperature just by brushing your hand against it, accidentaly.

Is the interior wall and racks also made of stainless steel or is it non stick?

I just got the 6-slice model. Wondering what that black nut is for at the back. It only seems to hold a small screw on the inside, but has this big plastic feeling nut on the back with a hex screw?! Its a weird thing
