    UPDATE:
During the post-production of the documentary "13 Lost: The Untold Story of the Thai Cave Rescue," director Raimund Huber received an email from Rick Stanton, leader of the British rescue divers, facilitated by Ben Svasti, a liaison for the British divers.
Stanton's email, containing false accusations/assumptions, was seemingly aimed to influence the director’s project and discredit Ben Reymenants. The director refuted these accusations/assumptions and asked for evidence, but neither Stanton nor Ben Svasti have responded yet.
Here is the email, along with the director’s response to Rick Stanton (Ben Reymenants should not be confused with Ben Svasti): drive.google.com/file/d/1U2zWN13lAbp0qsWX6iCXUQbH25fXj2ea/view

The truth needs to be told.
So the ropes were laid by Ben and Maksym. And it was BEN who suggested to use the face mask for the boys.
The British found the boys BUT without 🇧🇪 and 🇫🇷 who built the infrastructure for 🇬🇧, the English will never find the boys on their own.
      HEROES to Ben and

@@vincegoshi Ben was involved only in the search phase of the rescue, and there's a good reason for this. The movie "Thirteen Lives" is largely fictional, and the National Geographic documentary "The Rescue" presents the story from the perspective of the British divers, with Rick Stanton and John Volanthen having an exclusive deal (even the Euro Divers were all cut out). The documentary completely omits the crucial line-laying phase. Volanthen’s book does not even mention Reymenants during this process, and Stanton’s book provides only a fragmented account. Here is a short summary of the true story. Enjoy: qr.ae/ps8L0A

I would like to say thank you to Ben, Maksym and Savy...You are the true heroes, because you have laid out the pathway reaching the kids. The two Britishers should thank Ben, Maksym and Savy. Documentaries and TV series have highlighted the Australian Doctor and the British, but never mentioned both of you. However, they have forgotten to highlight Ben, Makysym and Savy big contribution. As always the Anglo Saxon people try to highlight their story. I am with you BEN, MAKSYM and SAVY. You are the true hero and the best. Kudos. Loves from Malaysia.

I knew the lines were placed and were a very important part of this rescue. The bravery and persistence of this group was unsung but we all knew they were there. This rescue could not happen without EACH group of incredible men doing their job. Thank you.

I wonder why they wouldn't give Maksym a rebreather? Ben had one, so he could have continued on for hours, but not alone. Maksym had tanks which didn't allow him to continue, so they both turned back. After watching a dozen retellings of this story, the cockiness of some of the "heroes," who never mention Ben, Maksym, Pae or Seva and were pretty dismissive of the Thai Seal team doesn't sit so well with me.

I must have watched 6 documentaries and movies about this rescue, this one just came across my UA-cam feed. It really helps gel all the glitz given to the British divers into perspective. We know at least a dozen international divers participated, but only 3 became acknowledged heros. I'm so glad these other intimate stories of this miraculous successful global effort are out there and not washed away with time. I live 7km from the cave, been there before during and after, not the most inviting habitat to be in under any conditions. he not only kept 12 young boys alive for 10 long days in blind darkness by keeping calm praying together, by way of meditation. In darkness he taught all 12 boys how ro find water in the rocks to fish for food with bare hands by way of sound. Taught them how to breath through their fears , not to panic in order to conserve their energy .

Absolute respect to these guys, they are heroes.
My dismay is that, not only the divers featured here but also the large numbers of support volunteers who have only been included as, “Oh yes there were others who helped,” without asking for or being given credit or acknowledgement. They too deserve much more recognition than has been offered. Personally, I am able to only name one, who I count as a personal friend, so it’s not even remotely appropriate for me to identify him. Enough for him to know that he has my undying respect! 👌
I think the lack of recognition is disgraceful, each nation involved should be encouraged to provide a roll of honour for their own Nationals, to be displayed along with the rolling credits of ANY and ALL media regarding this truly international cooperative operation!

The cave isn't at fault. It has been visited safely by many before.
What needs to be done is changing the work culture in Thailand. It should not hierarchy based.
The incident could have been prevented if employees at the weather centre had the authority to issue a public warning about monsoon starting.
The slow process of getting critical information to the higher ups and then waiting for their response. That really played a strong part in this unfortunate incident.
If public warning had been issues just a little faster. The soccer team would not have entered the caves.

    Synopsis:
The untold story is that Rick Stanton and John Volathen of The British Cave Rescue Council initially found it too difficult and dangerous to penetrate into the cave and were about to give up when two other divers were called in, Ben Reymenants of Belgium and Maksym Polejaka of Ukraine.
Ben and Maksym did much of the ground work in way of exploring the right side of the T junction and laying of guide ropes through the most difficult sections- making the rescue possible and yet are barely mentioned in most articles and documentaries. In 12 Lost interview, Ben states he was the first to say the kids would need to be brought out in full face masks and was ridiculed by the Brits and shunted off to manage the O2 tank replenishment station.
However both were recognized by The Thai Royal Navy and His Majesty The King to receive medal commendations.

Fantastic story, after this happened I have to say I was a bit Thai cave rescued out but this was completely engaging a story. The 2 divers Ben and Max are just awesome in what they did for those kids, strangers, and without deserved recognition. And they are understandably pissed off, but not bitter. I can’t even conceptualise how they did what they did, leaving jobs and loved ones to dive in murky water and deal with international ego politics. I never could see myself even dreaming I might risk it all for a dozen kids I didn’t know. Now that I can own that I’m not hero material, how about those British? To be fair, of course they too were extremely heroic, and deserved allthe praise they got but I couldn’t help but think, Maksym and Ben: been snubbed, robbed and I the end, pwned by the English? I’m Australian, welcome to my world!

Особисті амбіції і "перетягування ковдри" як прояви низького людського єства, втім, не відміняють героїзму британців. Головне - життя, які було врятовано неймовірною жертовністю простих людей, котрі об'єдналися для створення цього дива! 💙

I’m glad the Thai Prime Minister and the seal team celebrated and honored you. At first, I felt very disheartening for you, but I’m glad the Thai team knew of your selfless sacrifice and gave you the honor, respect, and credit you all deserved. Synopsis: This video is about two divers who laid down some guide rope which helped the later dives (they were still a long way a way from the boys) and they did not have the right breathing regulation system to allow one of the divers to go long enough. The one who did have the right equipment probably could have made it to the boys but divers always have to go in pairs. The pair also have some 'near misses' e.g. diving watch broke, getting sucked in to a current, some of the rope they laid was not tied properly and floated away.
After the Brits reach the boys the divers in this video do not dive in the cave again. It is not made clear in the video why they are asked to leave (around 40 minutes in) but they state that they go back home to work. Just before this there is a scene of one diver pouring large glasses of vodka to celebrate the boys being found. A few days later one diver returns to help load oxygen tanks and the other who did not have the correct equipment does not return (His diving breathing regulation system would not have given him enough oxygen to reach the boys and get back).
In the end the divers are bitter and jealous that the Brits got so much fame and attention and they did not. The two divers are invited to a Thai palace for a reunion ceremony and are given an award for their efforts and bravery.
The video does not mention the experience and skills that the successful British and Aussie rescue team had (anaesthetics, cave rescuing) which ultimately meant that they were the ones who saved the boys lives, not these two. It also does not mention that there were thousands of people involved in this operation and that every miniscule role played an important part.

Thanks for your comment. I agree they are bitter and jealous. Attempting to make more of their contributions than they are worth. The cave divers who did the rescue have done many rescues over 30+ years. These guys aren’t in their class both as divers and as humans. True hero’s don’t add up tshirts and caps, or vague mentions by navy seals. Rick Stanton et Al didn’t brag, just got on with the job. Now they have received proper recognition people like the “stars” of this video try to steal credit.

Indra - I agree. When 'one/some' (very understandably) lost hope, others stepped in and pushed forward, and so and so forth. Without the team on top of the mountain, directing the water away from the sink holes the rescue would not have happened; without the strength of the coach keeping the children calm, the ending would have been tragic; etc. etc. etc. ...and so and so forth. Every person involved played a their very important part - the aim was to rescue those poor children and their coach - the aim was achieved. Precious lives were saved, by everyone stepping in and stepping out, and pulling together to achieve that aim. A magnificent effort from each and every one concerned - it upsets me when people sour this fantastic and magnificent happy ending with negative unhelpful comments.

However, there are many drivers take turn to work in various tasks and focused to help, not to show themselves to the media. But “SOME” drivers came for the “Pictures and News” inside the cave to sell to the media which is illegal, that is why they are not allowed to enter the cave in the later.

In his book, Rick Stanton falsely insinuated that Ivan Karadzic, who was suffering from a fever and severe dehydration in the field hospital, was essentially seeking a way out of the rescue. And John Volanthen in his book said “Some of the Euro Divers only went into the cave once before deciding the work was not for them. The egotists in the group were noted too.”
However, in reality, it was only Rick and John who gave up on the rescue and the children, opting for sightseeing instead. Besides of Ben's team (the Thai Navy Seals support team) and the Euro Divers, the British also downplayed and/or made false accusations or insinuations against the Governor, the Admiral, the Thai Navy Seals, and the SpaceX team, all of whom were essential to the successful outcome of the rescue but were not part of the British team.

These men did a fantastic job and deserve the credit but never forget it was the admiral and the navy seals that continued when all decided it was too dangerous. Ben even mentions this- it’s what changed his mind to continue. The Thai people had to continue with or without international help because they couldn’t abandon their own. The only reason the British didn’t go home is because this team stayed behind- the British obviously knew and decided to wait to see what progress they made and between them had decided to let others risk their lives and do the dangerous work. They timed it perfectly- really disappointed in the British- it’s a shame that they behaved this way. Then again, I’m not surprised tbh.

Everyone did a part. It truly was a joint effort.
But Max & Ben, WOW. 👏👏👏 The world needs to know more about this part.
Mostly, we've just heard how 2 British divers found the boys & Dr Harris the anesthesiologist, who won the Australian award.
Edited: in my original comment, I had mentioned about the rumors that had circulated, about why the British weren't on speaking terms with the 1st team anymore etc.
A reply comment has explained the other side. So to not continue on the rumors, I have edited/deleted the original piece.
All in all; the Thai Cave rescue was truly a joint effort. EVERYONE & every bit was critical. From the divers to pump workers, all risked their lives, to the people who donated all the food, cooks cooking, to the owners who donated all the lines used, all the pump materials, and... to the poor villagers who had given up their farmlands knowing full well their land would have no crops for a year. And still agreed unanimously to allow the flood waters to be diverted to flood their farm lands.
    👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Without any one of those, the rescue may not of been successful.

This is absolutely incorrect. The British divers gave up on the rescue and children and went sightseeing at the Tham Pla temple when the Thai Seals with the help of Ben & Maksym finally managed to make progress and laid guideline. The Seals, Ben & Maksym who had little to none information of the cave were practically diving blind when they laid the guideline through the most COMPLEX part of the cave. Robert Harper and Vern Unsworth who explored the cave in the past and were familiar with its passageways were with Rick and John sightseeing. According to Rick Stanton before diving even was possible the British team had distanced themselves from the Thai Navy Seals and Ben's team and mainly worked with the US Air Force.
The Thai Seals, Ben and Maksym recorded all their progress they have made in a waterproof notebook and when Ben had informed the British divers of the amazing progress and brought them back on the rescue with the help of Ruengrit (Pae), the British divers were briefed by the Thai Navy Seals (there is a existing video of it).
And the next day when the children were found it was Ben personally who briefed the British divers of his progress in chamber 3, just moments before they dived (there is also a existing video of it).
Elaine, the rumors you have heard could not be further from the truth.

Since the release of the documentary 13 LOST numerous complaints were made that the British divers Rick Stanton and John Volanthen in fact did credit Ben Reymenants and Maksym Polejaka for their essential contribution in finding the children, especially when Rick and John gave up on the rescue. Truth is Rick Stanton did not officially credit the two European divers until 3 years after the rescue (1 year after the release of 13 LOST) and John Volanthen never assigned any credit to their invaluable help. Even though in his book "Thirteen Lessons that Saved Thirteen Lives" John explained that one should always give credit where credit is due (Lesson 8). In fact John only discredited Ben Reymenants in his book and never even mentioned Maksym Polejaka once.

John made a ridiculous claim in his book that Ben, who is an exceedingly competent diver and taught high level diving courses for decades, pushed for an immediate extraction without making any plan whatsoever on the night the children were found. It's John's against Ben's word because nobody understood what was said between them on that night, not even Rick who sat right next to John during the argument. However one team, believe it or not, did push to dive the children out right there and then the same night. But it wasn't Ben, It was the British team, namely Vern Unsworth who told the New York Times that night that "It would be far better for the boys to be taken out immediately" Vern added " Because they have never dived before, they will have to learn very quickly, like in the next few hours."

Ben was also quoted in the same article, here is the link: archive.is/At3bm#selection-1271.0-1663.88

Ben was later blocked from entering the cave. To support this action, false claims were made that Ben had sold pictures and footage of the rescue and gave unauthorized interviews where he apparently had slagged off the British divers. But the truth is, when the British divers gave up on the rescue and the children, a reporter asked where the British divers were and Ben simply stated that he didn't know, but reports said that they had packed their bags and left.
Master sergeant Derek Anderson, who is on record, said that Rick Stanton refused to work with Ben when he had returned just one day before the rescue and because the rescue team was already set with Rick as the leader and because the British team was under the wings of the US Air Force, they had no choice but to act upon Rick's request. Two Thai government officials also confirmed Derek Anderson's claim. Derek thought that Ben was a good diver and that all the accusations about Ben were conveyed to him by Rick but personally never made any negative observations of Ben.

When two leaders can not work together one has to leave, so simple is that and the USAF made a decision which Ben fully understood. But the way the ban of Ben was executed by hanging pamphlets with pictures grabbed from his facebook account can only be described as immoral, moverover the pamphlets looked more like a 19-century WANTED sign. Instead of handling the matter professionally and discreetly Gary Mitchel from the British Cave Rescue Council according to Rick Stanton approved flyers with Ben's pictures on it prohibiting him entrance into the cave. Knowing that hundreds if not thousands of cameras would pick up on it, the flyers were distributed all around the cave site and Chiang Rai airport. Of course the hungry media reported on it and caused irreversible damage to Ben's character. Even Rick Stanton personally called Gary Mitchel’s act unprofessional, unfair and harsh. Others just called it disgusting.

How sad. Its one thing to be not recognized for what you have done. And I believe both Ben and Maksym (and the unsung heroes that this documentary mentions) are absolutely fine with that, knowing what they've made possible.
But its another thing to take credit for somebody elses effort (or worse, actively discredit that somebody with false allegations). Why do people behave like this? Especially people like these, who volunteer and risk their lives to save the lifes of others.
Anyhow, I just found this documentation and saw it for the first time. It's wonderful! Thank you!

Whatever the actual circumstances, this documentary would have been better served being just a celebration of the feats of Ben, Maksym and co IMO. The constant little swipes against "the British" team sours the tone and make it appear more like a hit-piece than a celebration of unsung heroes. Ben & the other divers _are_ heroes, and are regarded as such in Thailand, just perhaps less well known internationally as the Media focus on the finding and the actual rescue (in which the 2 Aussies feature prominently). This part of the 18 days deserves to be told, the bitter tone detracts from it.

Sounds like textbook "intel" and govt and "private security" corporate cr ---. There were media and govt spook types swarming the place. Some, not all, trying to exploit the crisis and story. You probably should be suing for defamation, which would include discovery of exactly when John/Rick made their first media contacts.

By the children's account, they were about to die that 9th and 10th day, they had hit the end of all human endurance. HAD Ben and Maxim not pressed as they did ... God bless!

In every story of heroism there is someone that takes credit where credit isn't due. That's human pride and ego and people that can't accept their failure.
"the person who says it can't be done is always interrupted by the person who just did it!"

Thank you all from Thailand. How can I explain my feeling word by word? Some story is a part of all. Thank you again.
