  • Four Corners documents the extraordinary international effort to find and rescue 12 boys and their soccer coach from a remote cave in northern Thailand. Mark Willacy was in northern Thailand for this special report.
The Australian cave divers at the centre of the rescue -- Dr Richard Harris and Craig Challen -- have since both been named 2019 Australian of the Year.

its not nightmare, i often dived for training on lake...but you know in winter in europe lake are dark cold low visility......its sharp your mind, you ask yourself, hey why i'm on this lake in winter in 4°water, 2meters visibilty 40meters deeps...its cold, its dark, its not fun, its dangerous, i'm tired cold, wter cant be breath, its death outside. why i'm here in this lake and not on my hot bed and tv this sunday.??...
yes i'm here for training for my next dives will be okay, i'm here because i want it and i will have more fun next dives more safely..and i'm also here because i take pleasure to deal with this situation,
and your are "working" you listen to your body, you think of what you have to do, and your adrenaline is very high...so the danger and your mind kept you entertaining...its really not boring, its about scaring and deal with it...
and for cave diver their pleasure isnt to rescue people, their pleasure is to dive deep underground, its more exploration nd team adventure, than about the cold tiring and glory....

A little-known fact: the boy at 54:54 is called Adul. He was very important at the start because he was the only member of the team who spoke any English. Until the Thai Navy SEALs arrived, he was the only person who could communicate between the rescue team and the boys. He speaks five languages and at that time, he was a stateless person. Thailand has since given him and his family citizenship.

Apparently the rescuers and Thai Navy SEALs let the boys help decide who would get to leave the cave first.
The boys, being boys and from Thailand, thought they were just going to get to leave the cave and ride their bikes home. Haha! So Thailand! (Whether they were all Thai or not, that is very Thailand.)
The boys had no idea that millions of people around the world, and a helicopter were waiting for them. The hospital was totally prepped. A doctor told me that all 13 had their own medical staff assigned to them. Everyone had their own doctors and nurses assigned.
But they are rural boys and thought they would just pedal their bicycles home.
So, he said, the boys decided that the boys who lived farthest away could go out first because they had to pedal first to tell their parents about the condition of the group.
This is part of why so many people love Thailand.

Never underestimate the power of Buddhism and meditation in calming kids in distressed situations.

I know some people were "upset" that the kids and coach and given tranquilizer and basically put into a cocoon before being evacuated.
My Mother once went diving in a nice huge straight lava tube, great visibility with a flashlight.
Seeing the fish swimming sideways and upside down gave my Mother a Panic attack/vertigo and she almost went thru an hour worth of tank in a few moments hyperventelating.
My Father thankfully calmed her down and got her out of there before she ran out of air.
She REFUSED to go into underwater caves again after that.
So yea, tranquilizer and being brought out the way they were was a great idea!
Minimize panic, and let the professional divers do most of the work.
May the Thai Navy Seal who died RIP.

Or do they want a successful rescue operation? Seriously.

i was really glad that these children has been together playing soccer. The discipline they acquire and developed as a team has helped them survived their ordeal. They were in darkness and having no food for ten days, but when the British divers found them, no one wailed. I saw two kids wiping their face, maybe they shed tears of happiness , for having been found.... as shared by the the children , they went into meditation to be able to conserved energy as suggested by their coach...their trust with their coach is total. The rescue mission was so dangerous. The kids were sedated to control them from panicking as their rescue team would dive with them to transport them to safety and the Australian guy said that the children accepted what they are to do to transport them to safety, no one cried, no one whimpered and he was amazed by the strong spirits, and strong mental strength the boys displayed. The probability of success was stated to be about 60-70%. With this statistics, the rescue team has left no stone not turned. The letters written by the children was a positive move in all angles. What ever happens, everything has been laid plain. The combined effort of Britain, Australia, USA, China, Japan, Finland, Denmark, Canada, and Thailand, etc made this miracle rescue mission possible, CONGRATULATIONS EVERYONE! I salute YOU!!!

To the 12 young soccer players and their almost equally young coach, staying together in the long hours of despair, hunger, and not knowing if you would be found by being calm was the best thing you all had done.
An adventure can sometimes turn out to be a mistake, but all of you lived for the moments and stayed focused to being alive, and did not let any negative emotions to affect you. You might think of the delicious food at home once you got out, but you never complained of being hungry or anything at all. All of you are heroes together with the rescuers and all the volunteers. You all definitely are teaching the world about resilience, strength, trust, love and humanity.
Like to see you all grow up to be happy, confident and doing the best for yourselves, your families and societies, locally or internationally.
May the divine power be with all of you, Team Wild Boar and Coach.

When they got out, they were probably not given super rich yummy food.
Doing so would of made them sick.
Their bodies would of gone into shock.
When helping someone who experienced hunger, it’s best to feed them simple basic foods and gradually get their bodies to adjust back to normal.

The CDG Rescue team are the world`s foremost experts on search, rescue and recovery in these type of cave systems. Kudos to all the Military and SAR on site that they followed the CDG teams advice and plan. Contrary to a lot of comments, they are NOT professionals , caving is a hobby for these guys, it just happens they are the best at what they do and have developed caving SAR procedures based on various rescues and recoveries over thousands of hours in British, Irish and European caves which are generally more restrictive than cenotes or karst caves. This particular rescue is indicative of the problem solving mindset that was in evidence where the 4 lads and Craig and Richard evolved the first time ever used rescue plan. Richard Stanton is 60 or 61 this year, Jason Mallison 51, John Volanthen 50 , just for context.

To me, the most heartbreaking line, which isn't shown in this video but is heard in some longer versions, is Adul's calm and brave "See you tomorrow." After hoping for rescue for 10 days, the boys see rescuers finally come, but they're about to swim away, leaving the boys alone again. Adul matter-of-factly accepts this and politely bids them goodbye. A book about the rescue recounts that the divers felt quite guilty about this, because they had no confidence that they, or anyone, would really be back the next day, or. in fact, that they would ever see the boys alive again.

There was no plan for what would happen once they were found ( and they in fact expected to find them dead). It would be up to the Thai Seals, and at that point the Brits didn't expect to have a role. And they did not think the Thais would be capable of swimming/diving to where the boys were. They honestly thought they were saying goodbye forever to the boys, who would likely die there. They had given the boys hope and promised more help was coming but they felt guilty because they thought they were probably lying.

@@missyelliot6237 it’s true. I’m an Asian and I lived for over a decade in the US. I’ve seen enough differences on how people there acts to situations like this. Americans always use their “I’ll sue you” card as long as it can satisfy their emotions. I don’t hate Americans tho. I myself have an American wife. Even my wife said most Americans think they’re great but they’re not and she even told me America has a lot of Karens. Hahaha. Peace, people. Don’t hate me. I’m just laying down what I noticed when we were still in the US.

@@TheManWhoCanBeMovedd no hate! It’s cool to hear your POV. I’ve never lived out of the country so I can’t truly compare America to anything else, but I can bsck your wife up! Lol. She’s right

@@Komodo1312 I think he is suggesting Mallison has the sort of cold blooded detachment useful in a wartime situation. I disagree but the man did have a sort of bearing that made me wonder if he was ex military.
