Yeah I've seen that before, I don't care for it. I'm used to typing the cheats out, been doing it since Sims 2 came out. Also, for tutorials, it is better to have the full cheat as a lot of people won't have that mod.

Me and my other 4 family members finally moved to settle in our own house that we bought for my parents to grow older in with my grandmother and me and my brother to finish growing up. I'm 15 and he's 18 so I guess he's grown, but he's living with us still. We have a "split floor" on our stair case and I was having so much trouble with it while recreating our house on sims, just to do it I guess. So just FYI you helped me tons! Ty!

You've explained it very well and I'm going to practice following every step. I could never make it work before this. This is going to be a real breakthrough for me in my house building. Again, I do a lot of fancy footwork with my building but I've always used the steps outside and had to count and add walls and floors, etc. to get the desired effect. I had not idea I could use the stairs tool inside! Once I figure this out and, more importantly remember to use it, this will make my house building much easier. It's really useful if you change your mind during the build - that can get hairy! That 5 floor restriction is kind of a pain with building - miss the multiple floors in S2
@puffins112 Yeah I know that. The only reason it is usually shown like that is for readability. constrainfloorelevation is harder to read than ConstrainFloorElevation.
tip, something i learned with late night, there is a level skip marker in the buydebug menue, so you can put those on the first and third level that you want to skip anyway, so it acts like a two story home, so if you have a basement you just need to click down 2 times instead of 4. just saves a little annoyance, but i have only tested this on the roof top level and the foundation level if i have a basement
Storey is the British/European english spelling of the second floor of a building. We Americans just combined them into one word like bat (the animal) and bat (the sports equipment).
The only thing I don't like, which I suppose is a small trade off, is the view the room takes on when you walk from level to the next. I used this method just yesterday and when you go to the next, what I call sublevel, it looks really weird. I had to Page Up when the Sim Paged Down just to keep the house looking normal. I think I've got the hang of how it works though, creating split levels..
I built the second floor of my house with the split level technique to make a modern looking, "thick", balcony , not functional but just to look nice, on the exterior but I can't get stairs going from the first floor up to the second. I can get the stairs aligned to look like they will function properly but my Sims cannot get up them. How can I fix that? Should I only use this for the balcony and do the basic build for the actual house?

You can apply foundation-height stories on any level using the foundation tool after typing "buildFriezes on". You have to select the foundation tool AFTER you entered the cheat. I highly recommend turning the cheat off again once you're done, else the game will just throw error messages at you whenever you wanna place a wall.
In Australia, New Zealand and virtually any country under the Queen of England's power you would spell it 'storey'. Same with 'colour', 'favourite' etc. American English is just a deformed version of what is actually English. :P

But I usually end up with an hour of headaches and a bulldozed lot. lol Is there anything we can do about the exterior paint, though? Split-leveling inside the house makes some weird things happen on the outside, and only solid colors look presentable.

Can I do the same thing with platforms? Isn't there a cheat for TS2 and TS3 to change the floor limit (How many floors you can add)?
Before answering, 1 regular wall is 16 steps of the stairs, a foundation is 4 steps (or 1/4 of a wall). What he was doing at 1:30 (Putting 3 sets down) was giving that floor foundation height. When putting stairs to change the level (without holding the ALT key), it put the steps in pairs of 4 (1/4 of a wall). (With holding the ALT key, the steps would be put down singularly.) If you were to want the wall at 8 steps tall, you would only put 2 sets of 4 [16-8=2*4]. If you wanted to make is only 1 step tall (even though it still needs stairs *>:(* ) you would put down 3 sets of 4 and then 3 additional steps [16-1=(3*4)+3]. If by platforms you mean flooring, then yes, the flooring does change along with the walls. If by platforms you mean the stage-like floor found along with foundations, I do not believe so. And speaking for The Sims 3 Only, there is not any possible way to change the floor limit. Please keep in mind that the majority of the information here may not be 100% true, I am going off of the larger quantity of videos I have seen as well as searching some blurs (/ things I was not exactly clear on). I hope my reply helped.
I have a really dumb question and I'll probably be bashed for asking it, but when you placed the stairs to drop the level of walls and there were just floating there, if you were to add floors to the sections can the sims use those? I only ask cause I'm trying to build a stair case that sort of does that curving, thats why Im watching all these videos again. :)

I discovered, with the window issue, that if you place a window on top of the one you already placed that isn't working, it'll fix it. My house is a trainwreck, but at least it has functional windows!
Every time I place my stairs, I can't place another leading down just below it, only on the same level as my previously placed stairs. Where have I gone wrong?
To make things look better? You might wanna put a kitchen or a living area for example a few steps down to sort of seperate it but still keep the whole plan open if you know what I mean :)

So this is a cool instructional video....but you're making this whole split leveling thing FAR MORE COMPLICATED than it needs to be. With the Cheat "placefriezes on" you are able to build a foundation on ANY level, NOT JUST terrain. By enabling the cheat you can have the EXACT same affect shown in this video by just merely plopping a foundation on the second floor. And, you wouldn't have to disguise a gap with stairs. Just an FYI.
Not the exact same at all. Like you said, friezes are foundations on other levels, you can't places objects inside of them, windows, doors, etc. This is very different.

There's actually a cheat called placeFriezes (on/off) it allows you to place a "Frieze" on your roof and is good for split leveling.

Yes, but that is very limited and I would only suggest using it if you can not be bothered to do this method to achieve greater flexibility.

You could use placefrieze on cheat to place foundation on top of floor

Different countries may have different spellings of the same words. Hence: color/colour, favorite/favourite.
