Sims 3 101 - Building Tips: Symmetry (Don't do it!)

- This is a very common mistake I see a lot of people making in builds, symmetry is often something you would like to avoid when building a house as it can make it look too much like a school, hospital, and generally un-homey.
I feel like I've just been smacked on the head with a newspaper and told "NO" in an Australian accent.
When its 2017 and your still trying to be good at building in a game that came out almost 8 years ago
Currently me😂😂
Me

I relate
2018
I have OCD. Building asymmetrical houses would slowly kill me inside.
Sorry to say, but that's not gonna happen. 60% of the buildings on the world are asymmetrical. Or you're just joking, or, making fun of people with OCD. Don't get me wrong
I actually have OCD. Diagnosed and treated. I know my name is 'troll' but this not me trolling. I don't like how you think that I'm joking or making fun of people with OCD. OCD isn't fun. It's terrible. I'm imprisoned in my own body.
I know OCD isn't fun, my mother and brother have it, I know, I am sorry that you have it and that I said it, I feel terrible now.
I can't stand things that aren't symmetrical. House building is very difficult for me.
XD are you OCD like me XD
OCD is a serious mental condition so don't act like it's not. look up the actual meaning of OCD please.
The incarnation of boredom get over it
Brock Schowalter get over what, child?
I can't agree with you on this one. Many, many homes are symmetrical, at least on the outside. Going down the stately home route: Lyme Park, Chatsworth House and Highclere Castle are all symmetrical on the outside (symmetry outside does not equal symmetry inside. I agree that inside symmetry is bad bad bad). Even Buckingham Palace is symmetrical! I live in England and lots of double fronted houses are symmetrical on the outside. So my point is that symmetry isn't always a bad thing. Starting out with a symmetrical floor plan and adding bits on as you go usually leads to some interesting shaped houses.
Symmetry works on houses that are supposed to be symmetrical, but if you do it on every house for the sake of it, it doesn't work. Unless you specifically set out to make a symmetrical design, I would suggest avoiding it. It works in estate houses, mansions, etc. But generally a lot of smaller suburban homes are not symmetrical. It can make the design much more interesting if it's asymmetrical :)
Totally down with that as a general idea. If you built a whole town full of symmetrical houses of all sizes then that's just a tiny bit Stepford!
Symmetrical mansions are actually very difficult to build. I think they look and feel the best because everything is balanced.
I feel like mansions can be symmetrical... And loads of houses in England are symmetrical
I'm an artist, but I've been building Sim houses and they always look... wrong! Now I know why! It should have been obvious. Haha, thank you!
my problem is i cant really think outside of symmetrical. its like someone is wearing a tie and its not straight in the middle =D
I agree with the feeling, but your video does not give any good reason not to make the house symmetrical. Basically, you're saying you don't like it, so we shouldn't do it... Not much of a tip
THANK YOU. I always make my houses symmetrical, by accident. >.< This really helps where you can see how to avoid it.
As someone with OCD tendencies A Sims house (and by extension a real one) that isn't symmetrical is auto-trash to me.
WORDS CAN NOT DESCRIBE HOW MUCH TIME I SPENT MOVING LIKE AN ENTIRE FURNISHED HOUSE IN THE SIMS 2 BECAUSE IT WAS OFF ONE SQUARE.
I disagree. I think the topic of symmetry is just a personal opinion. I've seen a ton of houses in real life that are perfectly symmetrical. Older houses a lot of times, are not because of add-ons and things like that but a lot of newer houses, ARE symmetrical. I think this whole topic is just a personal opinion. Personally, I love the look of symmetrical houses, at least on the outside. I think they look a lot more neat and put together.
I agree. I prefer the look of symmetrical houses.
I never really thought about making my houses symmetrical. I just subconsciously make my houses and they always turn out to be completely random. My brain must know this rule haha.
If you read the specs for the game it says:
Memory: (XP) 1 GB; (Vista) 1.5 GB
Symmetry usually works for Georgian styles.
Symmetrical houses usually happen for two reasons: they're starter homes (i.e. they don't have any extensions on them and are built quickly for a low selling price) or the lot is really narrow/small. If you think about it, non-symmetrical houses are, by definition, more expensive (in real life I mean) because all those rafters, and the engineering to make the roof work, increase the price pretty quickly. That's why apartments, condos, duplexes are often symmetrical: easier/cheaper to build.
Thanks for the advice. I always thought houses had to be symmetrical, maybe that's why I had trouble making houses.
Plenty houses are symmetrical. Such as Colonials, Cape Cods, Georgian, Farmhouse, Classical Revival, Adam/Federal, Neoclassical, Greek Revival. But most of them are symmetrical houses are ascetically appealing to curbside appearance. I understand if you are not to make a symmetrical house all the way around.
Seriously, thank you SO much for these helpful building tutorials. I'll be more interested in building my own houses now that I know the tips and tricks that you builders use. Thank you!
If you save the house into the save bin and move family out. Bulldoze the lot replace with saved file and move family back in. It fixes this problem. I had same problem so looked up solution and this worked. Apparantly you should avoid putting holiday house lights up to avoid it happening again. Hope this helps :)
U mentioned that the reason houses in reality are not symmetrical is due to all the add-ons over time. So would you suggest that someone who wishes to build a massive mansion for example, start by building merely the bare essentials (Which could simply be box-shaped even) before doing add-ons until the house becomes a mansion?
I will make my houses symmetrical if I want to.
It depends on what kind of house you are trying to built. If you, for example, want to build a period building and the period actually had an obsession with symmetry (Georgian high class buildings are such), it would be a mistake to build a funky house. Also, some people still like it. People build according to their own believes, their surroundings and other stuff.
My houses start with a room then I place some furniture to get an idea for size. I usually have a lounge room, kitchen, dining and bathroom downstairs all using the same method of using furniture to work out the size I need. Stairs to the 2nd floor go where they fit best. 2nd level is bedrooms, bathrooms, small lounge, play areas. Both top and bottom have balconies. I may add up to 4 floors. My houses never end up symmetrical, they end up looking like Frank Lloyd Wright houses. Not intentionally
Thank you. I recently got into castle building with Sims 3, and couldn't figure out why none of my creations looked realistic. Now I understand what I've been doing wrong.
Like I said, most houses aren't symmetrical, which implies that of course there are some that are, but they don't look good like you said :P
It CAN WORK, I have made every house like this for many years of Siming, but I think what you're trying to get at is it needs to be highly decorative and break the "samey box feel"
Yep, and because older homes generally get renovated like I said, they are no longer symmetrical :)
OMG I USED TO WATCH YOU PLAY SIMS 1 AND UR SIMS CAUGHT FIRE😅 YOUR ONE OF MY FAVE UA-camRS EVER
That H shape actually is what my childhood home was. It was quite nice, but in general I would agree that symmetry can cause things to look sterile, especially in Sims.
I was thinking about that and I thought symmetry was like the goal when building BUT NOW i know better. You are right, it kinda has this hospital feeling. Thank you for this helpful video✌️
symmetrical houses look nice, but they look boring if you have a lot of them close to each other. (buy they need to be small to look nice)
I live in a ( believe it or not ) pretty big trailer that is synthetical only because it is just one rectangle and isn't a house built directly on something. It doesn't look too good but the plants and decorations outside make up for it. No symmetry inside!
I would have to dissagree to an extent. When building larger houses i think symmetry can work very well (usually when the building's shape (including the roof) is more complex then a few rectangualer walls. As for the interior, generally no, it looks silly, however very descreet symmetry in terms of key rooms can be syymetrical when covered up by non symmetrical smaller rooms, although anything other then that, personally i find, rather ugly.
Ill tell u a secret if you dont hate me....this is my biggest problem haha I always build symmetrically. (But try not to too) youre right its just so boring! I love your houses so much character
certain architectural styles tend toward symmetry (colonial style for instance) but by and large, most don't have perfect symmetry.
Yeah. i'm obsessed with symmetry... and somehow everytime i start building a house in the sims, even if i have a totally different idea.. the end result...is a symmetrical house AND its decorations
do you have any sugestions on how to make a victorian house? or those greek/roman styled houses that exist in western Europe?
when its 2022 and you still want to be able to build 10 years after playing for the first time
Partially agree with your points (In the united states the only buildings that are symmetrical are tall buildings pretty much (at least where I live) or buildings meant to be symmetrical like my house is not symmetrical in 2 ways one the rooms and 2 length and width from the roads perspective it is wide (as in looking at the front of it from the road exactly in front of it) but looking at it from say a bit further up the road or coming up the hill at the start of the road it is rather thin from that perspective
I see a ton of million dollar homes in magazines... And it really bothers me when the most expensive one is just a box. Boxes are the worst symmetrical shapes of them all.
Hey, I don't have the 3rd tool next to day/night and grid tool… I also don't have the second slider in roof options and no option of "reheighting" only one roof. You also have 7 roof models more than me. Can you tell me, why is that? I agree that symmetrical houses look horrible.
why can you see the measure of the wall like 10 x 10? is there an option for it or some mods?
Hey,I build houses and ect so I want more 101s plz
I'm building a house with an atrium in the center and an attached carport. I had wanted to leave the carport roof flat and use a hipped roof for the house; essentially the building is a square shape with a hole in the middle. However, I can't seem to get the roof looking right. Any suggestions?
+Jezzie Belle I would say roof your house using auto roof. Turn that off after the roof is on, use the hammer and destroy the part over the car port and add a flat roof over the carport using columns to support it.
What about if you're making a more country mansion type house? They are quite often symmetrical, at least on the outside.
When building the roofs, you have a much bigger selection of roofs. You also have a second slider and you can change the height of any roof individually whereas I can only change the altitude of all my roofs all together. How so?
AntonPershin99 I know its a bit late but i watched the video for roofing and there's a button that you can click. then drag the roof you want to lower/raise. cant remember what its called tho.
okay, I'll try and look for it, thanks
AntonPershin99 I used it today and it worked
I personally would make more diagonal homes in sims but alot of times furniture doesnt sit right and is funky
I was working on a giant mansion a while back. It was decorated beautifully but I hated it. It was completely symmetrical. Heh.. thank you.. great advice!
I always find my self building symmetrical houses or box shaped houses. I think its because I live in an apartment that the exact shape as a shoe box and not much larger.
This is absolutely positively my biggest problem when building. I just recently stopped building with everything symmetrical. Thank Plumbob for graph paper.
I feel like this video could have talked more about balance in the house's layout (like if there's an addition on the left, there should be another addition on the right or front right of the house). But I dunno. That would be a good topic for another episode!
I HAVE 2 GB MEMORY AND WORKS FINE, It also depends on your mother board older models can only take 2gb mine does , look up on your computer on line and see the max memory your computer can handle, then load it up lol, also having a better graphics card helps gaming alot!
When I use symmetry its for the houses of Sims 3 celebrity's. But even then it's only the exterior. But the landscaping is NEVER 100% symmetrical because nature isn't like that.
Most of my houses are symetrical, its just damn hard for me not making them that, since i think it looks wrong when they are not, have been working on it to be able to build houses after my needs instead, so start with floor plans instead of starting with the look on the outside of the house, and then i take it from there.
I'm just plain lazy at spending time on my roofs, which is why I have quite some symmetrical houses, but I think I did some good ones. Granted, they are expensive mansions, but I think they look alright.
but.... but..... I LOVE SYMMETRY! Q.Q
(ps. I live in Norway, in a really old house, and the old classic "Våningsbyggene" (Våningsbygg: where the owner of the farm lived with his family. often 11 to 18 people) /mansions are symmetrical, and they looks just fantastic
Oh my gosh... I DO THIS AND I HATE MY BUILDS! This is awesome, thank you!
Most of the houses in my area are symmetrical, however they are mostly from the 1930s, and they are semi detached (so if you removed one side they'd be assymetrical, so =P)
the funny part is that at 1.28 there is a symmetry house in the background. all houses in his city he build him self :)
A huge amount of traditional british houses are symmetrical. I do prefer more diverse houses with more detail, but that's down to my preference. A lot of people love the symmetrical houses! So i think it's a little unfair to say it's a mistake or wrong. It would've been better if you had stated that if people want to build house like yours then avoid symmetry. Just saying.
But I always use symmetry for windows? Is that wrong?
Totally agree with you Symmetry is not for home at all haha
So you could say “No SIMmytry”?
I use symmetry sometimes in my houses, (but is asymmetrical in terms of going inside or the cosmetics.)
I do this if I want to have homes like that, but some of them are also asymmetrical. ;)
i felt embarrassed because my houses are all symmetrical. The school building house you were demonstrating as a bad thing, i make those all the time. Even the symmetrical room thing i do all the time.. im so bad. Atleast it works for me, i would not say that all symmetrical houses are ugly, like you stated that you have built some by accident.
the only thing i make semetrical in my houses i build in the sims, make all first floor corners the same size AND bathrooms.
of course symmetry makes the house not as interesting as a completely unsymmetric house.... but there are a lot of people who really love symmetrical houses (i'm not part of that), and so building symmetric is, i think, not a mistake, but just another way of building.... maybe not the most interesting way, but i know people, who really hate unsymmetry....^^
there are better symmetrical houses than you've shown, this might have been a really bad example^^
just wanted to say that..
Thanks, i don't have the game so i can't read what the specs are but what does it say for windows 8 sorry to bother you again.
Um, have you seen my channel? I'm a builder, I build houses.
I think symmetrical is the American Way to build homes. We have Diagonal everywhere.
2:47 "a weird shape" look closer my dudes...
He said " god im bad at building" I was like "BARLEY".
How do you make the Sims 3 go really fast? I mean, everything is smooth.
I managed to break my symmetrical habits over time. Takes some adjusting.
It should be!I have 4GB and I still have some memory issue when playing a household for a long time!
Some houses can look great and symmetrical but usually when i build houses they are ususally asymmetrical
I love your videos- so helpful!✨😍💫
I have been watching your videos for about 6 months now and I only just realized I hadn't subscribed yet 😂 (done now). I am getting back in to sims 3 hence the commenting on a really old video.
I love symmetrical houses, most of the houses in my area are symmetrical. They are all about a hundred years old though. I should probably practice unsymmetrical houses to!
Does Sims 3 work with a 2 GB memory
I wish they put curved walls into the game that would look good for some buildings
The symmetrical building looks like a duplex or town house.
I feel insulted because the exact building you made at the beginning is what I had
i always want my houses to have the same look.. now I'm thinking about not doing it the same
Can you build a house in the x box version please.
Oh gosh, I'm obsessed with symmetry. No wonder my homes suck lol
Death the kid would not be happy...
Can you make a video on shaping pools ?
Houses are not symmetrical? Huh? Most houses I've seen are symmetrical. Must be different in USA(?)
honestly, i think if you like symmetry ...then you like symmetry. It's your game, play how you like! I, for one, like symmetry ::shrugs::
i just wanted to learn how to build better houses in my really old game after watching his video
and oh my god, poor guy sounds so sad
I used to do symmetry a little. It's mentally hard not to tho.
I always build my houses symmetrical, It's hard not to.
You just add another reason to build symmetrical:))
"That doesn't look like a house." Really? It actually looks quite similar to one of my neighbors house.
Haha, I loved this video, it was like a rant. I agree though fully, I've done this SO much but I need to stop.
I think symitry makes a home look cute
Thanks for these tips! So true about the symmetry thing.
