"Kids, you can't talk yourself into falling in love. It doesn't take days of deliberation. When it's real, you know pretty quickly, and with absolute certainty. I had forgotten that, but I was about to be reminded."
BACKSTORY: In 1975 while a sophomore in college I had bought a 1971 Trans Am 455 HO. Firstvthing I did was to buy 8 track tapes. On the way to school there was a home with a sign out front advertising 8 track tapes, $1 each. I went in looked around and bought one. It was a homemade 8 track that had songs from various artists. Anyway, a year later someone stole the tape from me . Dawn of the internet 1996. I never knew the name of the song or the group. I searched the internet, high and low, using the one word I hought I had remembered in the song, "Gloria". Over the years and decades it bugged me as I was able to answer many lost questions from yesteryear searching the internet but couldn't locate the song. Today 10/6/24 while piddling away on UA-cam listening to rain fall and waiting for the next I came across this video. At first I said to myself I've heard that song before but when then said "Victoria" I screamed out "that's the song". What's next: there are 2 songs I wish to locate. The first is from the disco days probably by a black group. I swear it sounds like they are saying "Darlene Darlene" but like this song I can't find it. A couple of years ago I heard it being played on a Walmart loudspeaker but it was hard to hear the words clearly. The other song had to be real old. It had the words River Rat in it. he song was on a 78 rpm record from my grandmother's house back in the early 60's.. My brother and I would play it and act really silly and it pissed mom off so much that she broke the record up and threw it out.
As an American kid I used to love watching those British Empire movies like Gunga Din and Charge of the Light Brigade. I guess that's why I like this song and it's lyrics.
I just loved this band from a young teenager I wrote their band name over ALL my school books. I’m in my late 60’s and have enjoyed vinyl & cd’s by the Kinks, through the decades. Inspirational. Far out lyrics accompanied by solid music. Thanks for the decades of beautiful musical vignettes. Jane Russell
A kinks rhyme I made👇 Ray and Dave gave us songs, we never knew, for how long, they did them for quite a while, legendary songs and some made you smile, the most English band ever, the question is whether they’ll ever be another as good, I think their talent is understood, now Its time to end this ryhme, and always remember that Waterloo sunsets fine !
Long ago life was clean Sex was bad, called obscene And the rich were so mean Stately homes for the Lords Croquet lawns, village greens Victoria was my queen Victoria, Victoria, Victoria, 'toria I was born, lucky me In a land that I love Though I am poor, I am free When I grow I shall fight For this land I shall die Let her sun never set Victoria, Victoria, Victoria, 'toria Victoria, Victoria, Victoria, 'toria Land of hope and gloria Land of my Victoria Land of hope and gloria Land of my Victoria Victoria, 'toria Victoria, Victoria, Victoria, 'toria Canada to India Australia to Cornwall Singapore to Hong Kong From the West to the East From the rich to the poor Victoria loved them all Victoria, Victoria, Victoria, 'toria Victoria, Victoria, Victoria
It's a send up, and kicks off an album all about little people getting buffeted around by the tide of history. A Ray Davies song should never automatically be taken at face value!
I am so ashamed to say I am 46 years old and have only just discovered there is a song about me. My name is Victoria. I want to publicly apologise to The Kinks. A 70 year old who I met for the first time started singing this to me. 🎶🎶 Omg I have my own song. I’m Victoria. It’s me. 😂😂

What an awesome song this is. And whatever the lyrical intention, musically it feels like a celebration. Unfortunately the rest of the album isn't a patch on it.
I noticed the country elements become more prominant towards the very end,is that to represent the decline of the empire? Crazy shit either way ig. The Kinks were kinda genius for this one.
Canada still has a Victoria Day national holiday (20 May this year). Safe to say that there are very, very few Canadians who give a single thought to the old girl though. For me, Victoria represents colonialism, so my feelings towards the holiday are none too positive. I suspect Ray would see my point. Love the song though! A fabulous anthem to misplaced nostalgia.

What’s that from?

@@jamesarmstrong-jones5082 How I met your Mother, they play this song in an episode
Love this reference!
I just saw that episode yesterday
First heard this song as a kid at the local swimming pool on AM radio in south Texas. The girls were dancing around the pool.
What a memory.
Awesome memory.
Thanks for sharing it.
Your absolutely welcome we are very fond of you from mum 🇬🇧 (Victoria)be good my wayward son 🇺🇸
You dirty dog

My country, Canada, gets mentioned in the lyric. Ray Davies is pure Dickensian. The poet laureate of English music. He deserves the Nobel prize
Canada to India
Australia to Cornwall
Singapore to Hong Kong
From the west to the east
From the rich to the poor
Victoria loved them all 🇦🇺
From about 2:50 in til the end, their hollering and whooping in the background is so cool! You can tell they were having a blast all in one studio!
That goes with any other song out there, and I like it.
That used to be my favorite part of the song!
One of the great, great rock albums of the 1960's - or any time. Brilliant throughout.
I haven't heard this on airplay in the States in 50 years, I bet! Glad I found it here!
The Kinks at the top of their game in 1969. Everything about this song is spot on.
As an American kid I used to love watching those British Empire movies like Gunga Din and Charge of the Light Brigade. I guess that's why I like this song and it's lyrics.
yeah, but this is a satire to the victorian era
@@nicelol5241 I see the satire and criticism, but the whole song isn't that way. Perceptions.
@ayyleeuz4892 Well said.
don't forget Beau Geste.
I have loved this song all my life and will love it for the rest of my life.
Mick Avory just makes this tune. I love how he pulls these fills out of thin air. You can hear his influence in so many modern drummers.
Never understood why Dave Davies gave him such a hard time.
Too much drugs, and alcohol. Dave would fight with Ray also!!😢
He's like a more refined Moon
Classic British anthem, beautifully parochial
The way it should be
I love this song so much I named my daughter Victoria
That's a pretty name
At least it wasn't Lola
I've got two plastic kids
Now of days it would be frowned on. Colonial and such
I was born lucky me...
Going through the kinks rn they all unique quality songs n great music ,love it ,thought ill meet the love ov my life dancing to these
Masterpiece
Dave is feeling it.

God Save The Kinks+!!❤❤❤
A history lesson, AND a sweet jam. Can it possibly get ANY better?
Only the Kinks can make a song about a historical period rock so much
No kidding. I used to assume I'd hate them because they competed with The Beatles but they were actually genuinely brilliant.
They did at first but they became their own thing and found their own sound, an equally brilliant band in their way
Long live The Kinks
The song that conquers All!
Excellent. Notice. They don't add USA. We broke away from the mother land before Victoria. The Brits know we will carry the torch for them, hopefully.
The Queen liked this song so much, she called herself 'Queen Victoria '.! Huge fan she was, apparently. 🙏
The only explanation I will ever accept.
This really reminds me of Television. I bet Tom Verlaine was a huge fan of the Kinks.
It does weirdly

Always in my heart ❤️
There are still possibilities.

Got Victoria tattooed on my neck❤
Such a bop!
Me gusta mucho este tema.
I named my kitty Victoria and a dude told me about this song because of it and naturally I love this song now!!!
They're celebrtating the British Empire!

It's really, really not.
Midwits in the replies know nothing about Ray Davies
80's song from them they say there is no England anyo
No they arent. They are talking about the decline of the British Empire
to my 1st love thanks you
Happy Victoria Day Canada! ( in a few hours) Love to all!

Great song, but I gotta say the live version on One For The Road is the best version (imo). Amazing 😎

I first heard this song in the pre cambrian age while landing on Venus in a double decker bus...😅
Ted meets Victoria again on season 7😂
Naive people are crazy about the Beatles their whole lives. Exactly until they get to know the Kinks)

I feel SO stupid. I thought this was a song by The Fall, for like 10 years. Wow.
Dang
i met this version first
Tom Petty, god rest his saintly brow, sent me here.
Only Ray Davies could come up with the idea of concept album about postwar Britain
I am not an animal!
I noticed the country elements become more prominant towards the very end,is that to represent the decline of the empire? Crazy shit either way ig. The Kinks were kinda genius for this one.
I drive a crown Victoria.
Perfectamente podría estár cantada por Paul McCartney
SO SO TRUE 👍 🎸🎤🎧🥁
Is this about Melbourne Australia?
No don't be silly it's about a sponge cake that has jam in the middle
And that is why it is called a Victoria sponge😅
She s cool... w
Hello again
Sing this to my wife Victoria
Would have sounded better if it was mixed in Dublin
Better than the fucking Beatles!
