Cab Ride on The Polar Express

- Hey everybody, it’s big Diehl, and today, we’re going to the North Pole on the REAL Polar Express. And when I say the North Pole, it’s the real one, not one of those fake ones, through the power of magic, we get on the real Polar Express as it takes off from Durango Colorado At the Century old train depot of the famous Durango and Silverton narrow gauge railroad. Now you might say that this is just the same Denver and Rio Grande Western steam train that takes passengers up to Cascade Canyon… but it’s not! Nope, this is the ACTUAL Polar Express people, and we’re taking it all the way to the REAL North Pole and back. We hop aboard the locomotive for a cab ride in this authentic locomotive that magically whisks us from the San Juan and La Plata range of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains across the Arctic Circle to that workshop full of Saint Nicholas’ elves.
Grab your hot chocolate, as we have ours, it was warmed by the magical fire of the firebox of this magnificent locomotive. Have your ticket punched by that Tom Hanks esque conductor that commands this train and takes our hero child to experience the magic.

What an amazing opportunity!
I was only rostered one night-time firing turn this year (West Somerset Railway) which was this coming Sunday, - a Carol Train. But, sadly it's been cancelled 😭
Working a steam locomotive in the dark is an awesome experience.

ALL ABOARD! THIS IS THE POLAR EXPRESS!
I rode the Polar Express out of Durango in 2017 with 482 being the locomotive chosen for the duty. It was a fantastic time! I noticed in the video how different 480 looks in the cab after the conversion, specifically the firebox door. Much different from the butterfly doors for sure! Fantastic video (much like the rest)! Merry Christmas!
I love how they made a special tender with the Polar Express written on it 🤣
They put a vinyl overlay on it every season.
Great job
Nice work!
Big Diehl is the real Deal he will take you to the place where is at and make you feel like you’re there too 😊
New channel for all those ambitious but amateur modellers like me started yesterday @ruggedrails
Cheers Rugged
480 is the current locomotive being mostly used on the d&s. In august we rode on the Silverton train and it was a great experience. At Silverton 493 also pulled in which got me some great side by side locomotive photo opportunities
What a great perspective! Another awesome video by the Big Diehl! I gotta say man I really love Durango during the winter and I am not a fan of winter. The way the snow lit up the route to the “north pole” was really neat. Thank you
Awesome low-light cameras you've got! Full moon that night?
Yes it was. It was shot with an iPhone 15 Pro Max, so a lot was some machine learning gobbilty gook, but hey, it looks good (I had no clue I'd be doing this, 2 hours before, I was in the hot springs, I didn't even bring the right equipment)
I used to think that Santa Claus wasn't real. Now I'm not so sure :) Nice video sir.
I always love to be a railroader and maybe I can work at the D&SNRR or The Grand Canyon and this is probably my favorite video I seen keep doing whatcha doin
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@Big_Diehl and thanks for the reply
31.3. 24 Ich freue mich so darauf! Gruß von Norbert aus Deutschland. 👍✌
Are you doing a video on The K-28 100th Anniversary?
Eventually… I have the footage
I have some photos already up at www.bigdiehlphoto.com/Trains/Durango/Durango-and-Silverton-2020
Grand video. Do they do multiple a trips a night since it’s so short of a trip?
Three times, which thanks to the magic of Christmas, it’s amazing that we’re able to cover all those thousands of miles between sundown and 2200!
At 11:55 of the video, there should be a warning. That flashing light or whatever it was can set off epilepsy
Who was the engineer of 480?
It was me!
Great video, but sure wished you'd used a better camera to capture the beautiful scenes you travelled through.
This is an awesome night camera. The engineer on this train was blown away at how much brighter this makes it look than it actually was.
Not exactly an easy thing to film at night, was actually surprised how well things look and how good things sound.
Also @bigpebble, this was all done with AMBIENT light. No flash, no strobes, nothing to distract the crew.
@@Big_Diehl you did an awesome job!
It's a great video. Hopefully 481 the coal burner will run the polar express at the durango and silverton
It ran a couple times a week ago before it went down it appears. I don’t know other than the fact that another coworker from here in ABQ rode behind the 73 to the North Pole last night.
Nice sounding whistle. Kinda has a Great Northern or SP desert 5 chime sound. What ashame they turned these into oil burners. Definitely not authentic anymore nor have the spectacular smell that coal provides.
At least EBT narrow gauge steam hasn’t been ruined by oil.
In no fashion have these been ruined… they’re still running in the face of climate change
Actually oil burning is safer because you are at the risk of Black Lung if you smell coal.
@@conradfok black lung comes from inhaling coal dust that hasn’t been burned. Similar to breathing in sand particles at a sand pit destroying your lungs causing silicosis
