- Canaan Sodindo Banana was a Zimbabwean Methodist minister, theologian, and politician who served as the first President of Zimbabwe from 1980 to 1987.
He stepped down in 1987 so that the then Prime Minister Robert Mugabe, who reformed the presidency from a ceremonial office into an executive one,
could succeed him. 10 years later in 1997, Banana was arrested on charges of sodomy. It is alleged that Banana had misused his power while he was President to coerce numerous men into accepting sexual advances. Although he denied the accusations, he was found guilty of eleven charges of sodomy, attempted sodomy and indecent assault in 1998. He served eight months in prison. Banana died of cancer in 2003.

Canaan was born to an Ndebele mother and a Sotho father, so that can explain his last name "Banana" better, which unlike what you think does not mean an actual banana. In Sotho, I believe banana refers to little children or something like that.
