Mugabe and Zimbabwe: 50 years of struggle

  • Robert Mugabe’s letter of resignation brings to an end his 37-year-old leadership in Zimbabwe. During that time he went from respected freedom fighter who overturned white minority rule to a brutal dictator. He promised racial harmony, but instead tore apart the once-prosperous country. White farmers had their valuable lands seized on his orders and given to the families of resistance fighters.

So sad to think this was the paradise I grew up in. Flying on charter planes to Mutare. My kids are amazed when I tell them about my childhood. Tennis court, swimming pool, in my yard , drive in movies. They are just shocked this is what I grew up with. This is heartbreaking. Its like loosing your whole history..my beautiful Zimbabwe!! @@spots- What did I say that lacks empathy? Do you know what forgiveness entails exactly? I'd rather follow the process of forgive than revenge. I don't think most people even know what true forgiveness is. It's not just forgive and forget. It's a specific process. This is forgiveness:
“If your brother sins, go and show him his fault in private; if he listens and pays attention to you, you have won back your brother. But if he does not listen, take along with you one or two others, so that every word may be confirmed by the testimony of two or three witnesses. If he pays no attention to them [refusing to listen and obey], tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile (unbeliever) and a tax collector."
To me, God's standard is there for a reason and informs most good law in government. But it is foremost a day to day, free will, act of self-discipline and can't be enforced by anyone. It is an individual's choice. If you think revenge is better, you will only end up being just as racist and making the cycle of violence continue. Forgiveness is the only way towards peace.
I tell you, if it wasn't for the little good that came through following forgiveness, SA would have had a far more violent and traumatic transition.
There's no better transition story in Africa to me than Botswana's story.

Primitive tribal cultures regained their country. The whites built cities, industry, and infrastructure then handed over the keys to the kingdom to the native cultures. Angola, Congo, Rhodesia, Kenya, South Africa, Niger. All the same story. Let us all behold what the native cultures have done to the modern prosperous kingdoms that were given to them. The story of the golden goose applies in every case.

Contrary to popular belief, Rhodesia didn't actually have racist laws, but what was called "qualified franchise", in which you had to have a basic education in order to vote. Most blacks did not qualify but the Rhodesian government struggled to educate them, even setting up affirmative action for blacks in universities. This was to prevent people like Mugabe from getting elected by an uneducated, superstitious, tribalist majority who quite frankly hated others of different tribes.

Kudos to all Political Gladiators and the Collional Masters that made this a reality, which includes Mugabe. I emphatize with the farmers that were affected and commend them for being innovative despite the disadvantaged situation before them. Let's learn to encourage and provide an enabling environment for the migrants amongst us. While, I implore the migrants and diplomats to work one on one with the existing authority to ensure that the people enjoy the dividends of democracy. I implore Mugabe and African leaders to release lands that were legally purchased by the Whites amongst us. I believe there is hope for Zimbabweans. Lastly, Africa leaders should always know when to retire. Leave, when the ovation is high. The Almighty God will give us the wisdom to lead aright and the grace to respect one another.

The truth is, Rhodes and Lobangula (Son of Mzilikazi) were friends and it was Rhodes that PERSUADED Lobangula a Ndebele to stop hunting the shona in mashonaland. Rhodes was a builder who build Rhodesia then Mugabe came along and broke it down again. There was never hatred in Rhodesia between white and black but there was always tension between the shona and Ndebele and as a policeman in the early days many times attended scenes of conflict between the two tribes. Nkomo himself admits that he made the mistake of taking sides with Mugabe. Nguruhundi was going to come to revenge the earlier days (before the whites came) of the Ndebebele slaughter of the Shona tribe. I was in attendance at the Mtumbane when the forces Zipra and Zanla were housed in Bulawayo after the war and even then the hatred of each other continued and they fought each other violently. Why do some people hide the true facts from our children. All the white man did was come to Rhodesia to try and find peace and build a beautiful first world country for All Rhodesian's to prosper from. People had jobs, education and a wonderful lifestyle and NOW there nothing left. 99.9 % of whites grew up with blacks and were keen to see change where all were equal in standard and yes we should have done this earlier than we did, but still I have wonderful black friends in high places in Zimbabwe who all agree it was better for them and their families under Rhodesian rule that it was under Mugabe's Zimbabwe rule which may I add was in power three times longer than Smiths Regime. God Bless Zimbabwe that they may now see logic, stop blaming colonialists, introduce a young educated youth to take over and use the vast skills past and present to rebuild the breadbasket it once was.
