The likelihood of me ever rendering beef fat is slim to none. Yet I watched from start to finish and never lost interest in this video. Meg just has an awesome way of explaining things. Great to see her have an entire video to herself tonight. Except of course Ben's brief cameo of Ben being Ben lol!
Actually she makes it way to complicated and messy by not using a large mixing bowl to chill the tallow....comes completely out of the mixing bowl as a solid piece when chilled....
It’s wonderful seeing you use these old skills that are in danger of being lost, and preserving them in video format so current and future generations can retain these skills is such a blessing. Thank you!
Pro tip on tallow. 1 Tbls salt, 4 cup water, grind tallow, mix in roaster, low heat to avoid scorching, strain into large stainless bowl, rest in cool location. Here's the best part, place a cutting board over bowl, flip over onto cutting board, place bowl and board in the sink, run warm water over the bowl..when the water splooshs out onto board, rinse the Puck of tallow with cold wster...reheat repeat
I watched a video you did 6 years ago and WOW!!! I didn't recognize you two, it was about why you chose the homestead life style, such an amazing transformation. You 2 are rock stars. Love watching you, continue to do what you do. Blessings for your family and farm.
Sooo cool and interesting. I'm the sober city girl who listens to y'all to help stay clean on sleepless nights. Congrats as well and thank you! Hugs from Cleveland ❤❤
You are amazing girl , you did it!! 🥰 And watching the Hollars vlogs is well spent time! They have gotten me through some really hard times too They are informative , filled with positivity, love and compassion for each other , the land and the animals. A lovely family with great values and work ethics . That they also have fun and making jokes and puns , makes the vlogs even better❤ I’m cheering for you and for them! Wow! Great job Meg , you work so hard on everything you do. ❤ You too Ben, I saw you still working on the beef in the background. What a feeling that must be to work so hard caring for the animals that feed your family.
I rendered a bunch of tallow about 25 years ago into glass jars. Mainly for heating and lighting, but they have not decomposed at all stored in underground wine cellar @50'F
I’m so excited for the addition to your family. I hope you tell us the gender soon. I’m hoping for a girl so buggy has a sister, she has plenty of brothers 😂❤ love you guys and your channel. You and Ben are such a hard working couple. Your raising some great kids! ❤
There is a woman from Ireland who renders a LOT of tallow on TikTok for soaps. I believe she adds some salt in when rendering and that also helps to draw out the impurities!
This is so timely for me, my husband took a steer to the processor yesterday, and I requested all of the fat(after watching your videos on processing your steer). Thank you so much for sharing your lives with us. Be blessed ❤
Meg, wonderful job, here’s a tip…. Pour the rendered fat and water into a large jar, then close the lid tightly! Turn upside down and this way all the good stuff is at the bottom, and you can pour off the water and other impurities out. Easy and quick, God bless
It's always a pleasure watching Meg. She has such an easy, gentle way of explaining whatever she is doing. Taught me a lot. I will never have a homestead due to age and disability, so I have a garden and buy a lit of meat from local farmers. Your entire family are so encouraging and accomplished. Can't wait until May❤.
Awesome job Meg. I didn’t know you could put water with the fat and clean it like you did. Like you said you showed how to render tallow from start to finish and it was so clean and smooth. Explaining step by step was very informative and helpful. Thanks for sharing . Oh, congratulations on the future a😊ddition to the family. I hope it’s a girl so Buggy will have someone to play with and do girly things together.9. Bye for now from Alabama. ❤
Meg, this is a really good instructional video. Your hands must be in super soft condition after 3 days of handling tallow. What a joy to have that much tallow. Can't wait to see what you do with it.
I'm getting ready to buy 1/2 cow in February and plan to render my tallow. Thanks for the tutorial on how to do this. Also, I just ordered the containers. I received an ice cream maker for Christmas and only have mason jars to store it in. These will be a much better solution!
Meg, you should save your beef gelation to add to the bone broth you make. Or, you can freeze dry it to make your own beef bouillon for gravies & soups.
I’m so happy for the new addition coming I hope Buggy gets a Sister but I can’t wait for the surprise when the Baby is born God bless you and your family
Excellent explanation and demo of how to render the fat for tallow! I'll be anxious to hear how much tallow you have upon completion of all the fat! Excellent tutorial, Meg!!!👍 After you washed it a couple times, it looked like big chunks of rich and beautiful butter after it cooled!!! Gorgeous tallow!
Thanks Meg, you taught an old gal a new trick. Wish I knew about rendering the beef fat years ago. Although in the last year I've put water in with the bacon grease to get rid of the burn bits and have nice clean grease. You & Ben are good teachers never boring and always good to learn something new whether about meat processing, gardening, trees, soil etc. Blessings to you and the family. 😊🇺🇲

This same process works well & does wonders for making weed butter. Mellows the taste. Meg scraped the impurities off the bottom, I run it under hot water
I do this method as well. But for the fat I put in 1/2 gallon jar with a couple cups of water. Put the lid on tight & turn upside down, once cool enough I put in the fridge & let the fat solidify. Take it out, turn it right side up & you can just pour the water out. You can usually tell how clean your tallow is once you dump the water out if the first layer of fat still has nasty stuff on it then it needs cleaning again, if it’s clean then you’re good. Usually it’s always at least a minimum of 2 cleans.

Ok, so you started with a couple (?) of tubs of fat but how many containers of final product did you get? Plus did you think that all those scrapings from the bottoms you did could be used for Suet and Seed feeders for the birds in winter? Just reform it into cakes and roll into bird seed to make blocks. Too much work for some but for others it would be a fun use rather than trashing it. Never seen it but mixing with some grain also might be good for the chickens. Certainly high calorie fat for winter birds.
