Depressed Jack - You Can't Help Me!

- My favorite scene from Lost Season 3 Finale. Jack mentions his father and tells the new chief of surgery that he can't help him. "Do you have any idea what I've been through?", "You can't help me!"

Matthew Fox was absolutely brilliant in this episode. He completely sold that it was all a flashback until the very end.
I binged the show and even after every episode being a flashback up until that point, I knew it was a flash forward
@@RealGaIaxy I knew it was flashforward as well.I can't remember why I felt that way at the time. I think the show gave us some hints.
@@billj4525 right
@@billj4525 Maybe because I watched this show in 2024 but when Jack told him to get his father, I knew his father was dead and this was a flash forward, lol. When the car approached, I "knew" it was Kate.
It was so shocking seeing Jack, who was always strong and in control, look so weak and depressed. It was actually tough to watch him look so broken.
The best twist I’ve ever seen about a character, the man who always wanted to leave needed to go back. I cannot forget this
@@rafaelcontrerasescobar5031 He basically turned into Locke. It’s a great transformation.
We were also trained for three seasons to immediately regard these as flashbacks. We also kind of knew that Jack had a rebellious streak to him and had issues with his dad. So it was totally believable that this was in the past, there was no reason to think it could be showing the future.
But when Kate steps out of the car at the airport, that’s when you start to think, “Wait, this can’t be right.”
Such a great twist.
@@logicaldude3611 I remember there being things in the show that let us know this was in the future though. I remember having a good idea it was in the future, but I can't exactly remember how I knew that at the time.
“Do you have any idea what I’ve been through” wow hits so different after you realize it as Flash Forward
so true bro
Jack is one of the greatest characters, very complex deep and sensitive. But for some reason a lot of people hate his character
Yeah maybe :D
Agree. I don't think people appreciate the hard work all of these actors put into the characters they portrayed in the series. And Jacks character was no walk in the park. Fox played him well. Most of the viewers are pretty simple-minded. All they want is answers to the mystery and questions.
It's because he was a controlling asshole! Don't get me wrong jack is a great character and Matthew fox is a great actor. It's when he was a control freak that people didn't like because he turned into an unlikable douchebag. Nobody likes a control freak. His yelling freakouts is when he was at the pinnacles of my annoyance. Don't assume just because somebody doesn't like a character or a certain aspect of a character that they're just "jealous haters". Don't stoop to the lowest denominator for the reason why. Other then that though Jack was a decent character and fox was a GREAT actor! 😁😁😁
I think it's because he is the main protagonist, so people feels like; "I had enough of this guy already"... I used to think like that when I was younger, but know it's the opposite; I can't get enough of him.
carat most people are simple-minded
"Get my father down here...". That line makes you think that this is a flashback but when it is revealed it is a flash forward, you realize he was just super drunk and forgot his father was long dead
He didn't forget. He was being sarcastic. Like saying wherever his dad is he's still drunker than he is
@@random-nz7dy I always interpreted it that he was so far gone that he truly thought his father was still there. It could also be said that Jack is longing to get back to where he was before the crash at this point and so he says get my father down here to make it seem like he is in the past.
@@1reptile121 no, it's not supposed to be psychosis. He knows his dad was dead. He didn't forget.
His point was his dad would be drinking in the afterlife, like even now he's drinking.
It was a very dark joke about his dead father.
That's why the other doctor shook his head when Jack said that, because it was such a dark depressing "joke"
@@random-nz7dy again, that’s one way to interpret it. You don’t know what Jack is thinking in that moment. We know that Jack was taking multiple drugs and alcohol so him “forgetting” is not completely off the table at all. Also again Jack was longing for some sense to get back to his past so him pretending to be in the past for that moment isn’t a crazy idea either.
@@1reptile121 I mean, if you want to view it another way, go ahead. But that's absolutely not how the scene is presented.
The reason they made this scene was to throw viewers off before they revealed this was a flash forward. It helped keep it from being obvious.
"If I'm drunker than he is, you can fire me!" That's a burn
Jack Shepherd is the quintessential flawed hero in the true Greek sense. He has a tragic arc too. Jack would save anyone, help everyone even when doing so came at great pains to himself. And he is human. His own father undercut his personal confidence, self-esteem and faith in himself! Jack grew up always wanting to prove his worth to others (and to himself) by saving them. He also had a very rigid code of honor...he told on himself to his wife Sara when he kissed the daughter of a patient whom he was consoling in her grief and commiserating with in his own sense of failure (to the patient, himself, and the woman). Jack held himself to a higher standard, accepting the flaws of everyone else but his own.
This caused Jack to be monolithic in his thinking and relentless in his actions. At times, in doing so, he accomplished the near impossible. He brought back Charlie from what looked like certain death, he save Boone from drowning. He saved Sawyer from bleeding out from Sayid's accidental knifing of him and later from the infected gunshot wound inflicted by Tom Friendly. He nearly saved Boone...and probably would have had John not lied about a fall versus crush injury. He made sure Aaron safe and Claire recovered from the deliver on Island, after talking Kate through the delivery process, while he was tending to Boone's injuries. He saved Ben's life in order to save Kate and Sawyer. He found a way to turn the tables on Ben and the rest of the Other who were coming for the remaining Oceanic survivors. He saved Sayid by treating him for the tranquilizers he was overdosed with. He treated Kate's wounds and tried in vain to save Libby. In the end, he saved Sawyer from drowning in the sub and saved the Island making sure Kate and rest were able to get off the Island.
Jack although maddeningly stubborn at times and dismissive in a very off-putting way, always made the safety of others and their rescue from the Island a priority. It's easy to dislike is tenacity and heavy-handedness but frankly, when the moment calls for it, rarely does anyone rise to the occasion and strive to overcome the challenges people face more than Jack. It sure as heck wouldn't be Sawyer whose first impulse is his own survival, and not John who would immersed in his own personal crusade. Sayid...sure rises to the occasion but he is such a force of destruction as well. The rest...not so much. Nope Jack is the man!
I like this doctor. He doesn't know Jack too, too well, but when he learned about the scene on the bridge, he still took it upon himself to check up on his new coworker to make sure he's okay. That's the kind of person we should all strive to be-caring, understanding, and genuinely invested in each other's well-being.
Amazing performance. Matthew Fox deserve an emmy for this episode. I remember those spoilers announced the future centrics episodes. When we learn that the season 3 finale would be a jack-centric, after that bad "tattoo" episode we were all like "lol stfu" .
But this episode was the best of all lost and one of the best of all time. He deserve an emmy, you can't make an episode like that without a good actor and he was also good on the island too during the finale (the confrontation with Ben!).
Great episode. I am going through it myself. He potrays the pain so well.
He had so many great scenes. One of my favorites was his talk with Sawyer on the island when Sawyer mentions that he ran into his father and tells him how proud his father was of Jack.
that tattoo episode had great acting
And sensational acting
you can't help me!
don't tell me what i can't do!
Matthew Fox should have gotten an Emmy for his performance of drunk Jack. The first time I saw him play that role I said WoW he really makes you feel for the guy.
For me this is the greatest episode and season finale ever.
You have a pure heart Jack. It's always the pure hearts that get crucified in life. Pure soul!
This episode was the best and was a great transition.
This was one of my favorite scenes in the entire series. I always loved how furious he gets when he realizes the guy pities him. Such good acting.
best version of jack
Do you have any idea what I’ve been through
L O S T have a lot of great actors, so it's hard to choose favorites because they are all so wonderful in their own ways.
He's being sarcastic because hiss father was such a big alcoholic and he's still bitter over their relationship
WE HAVE TO GO BAAAAAACKKKK
What I've always wanted to say to people who just don't seem to understand. EPIC scene!
That was the most depressing "you cant help me" i ever heard. So hard to watch when people are so broken.
That episode IMO, was the best twist in Television history.
I can see parallels between this episode and the other one called ''the confidence'' when sawyer says to kate: ''don't you feel sorry for me. Get the hell out''
This episode takes me back to another season 3 story Stranger in a Strange land when Jack questions Archara who is able to see who Jack really is. “You are a leader, a great man. But this makes you lonely & frightened & angry. Such awesome dialogue
I have watched every lost episode many times and this scene is my favorite part out of the whole series so far. Brilliant acting and a brilliant scene
Jack and Sawyer both said the same thing - “don’t you pity me.” Damn good writing. And the way Jack said, “do you have any idea what I’ve been through?” really encapsulates the pain and hopelessness he was feeling
I knew this was a flash forward when I watched. I can't remember why, but I believe the show gives us some hints. Just him saying that I think can help us figure out that this was in the future.
don't you pitty me
And once you get to the end of the episode, you understand why the chief of surgery reacted to the reference to Jack’s father the way he did.
Great performance
Why do I want that denim jacket
Jack always felt he had something to prove
great acting
This show was so deep..i.miss those times..i feel like we cancel a show, and thats it 2 year later its forgotten.u cant even discuss it with people they forgot.
Well not this show, it's been 10 years since your comment and people like me still care about and think of this show
do you have any ideal what i"ve been thur! LOVE IT!
so good
Corey Booker having his Sparticus moment.
Vote blue!
daddy issues man. they're the worst.
All the best cowboys have daddy issues
But it made a good the neighbourhood song
Even Jesus had daddy issues. You know the whole "father why have you forsaken me?"
Every single person on this show had daddy issues, every last one
The answer to how much have you had to rink is always the same. Not enough.
it's amazing scene, especially at 1.39. matthew fox is magic in this episode !!
C'mon is so freaking obvious, Jack is just venting through the anger with his relationship with his father who was an alcoholic.
l2 watch lost, they asked him to be leader
I was there
u must be a jack hater, because what u said is bull. jack is not a control freak, the losties asked jack to be leader remember.
Also, he was kind of being sarcastic.
question is jack is why is gibs playing jacks doctor
they elected him as leader. re watch season 1
Lol how drunk was Jacks dad? We will never know.
In this time it was post island so his father was suppose to be dead 🤷♂️
He was delusional, it added to the twist to fool you into thinking it was a flashback. We never saw him in thie episode, just Jack's ramblings.
@@Jedi_Are_Scum I didn’t understand what you said, wasnt this post island?
Great great performance!!! But... how the new chief know that it was Jack the man in the bridge???
He saved the woman from the car accident pretty quickly. The doctor was making an inference that was proven right by Jack's reaction.
Put 2 and 2 together. It was likely given how things played out
so thats how arjun reddy came to the picture
Is no the do is the same nurse Sayed fought and drugged
Personally I think that Ben will allow Jack to go back in time and work things out with his dad so he wont die.
what episode was this?
Season 3 Finale, it was a huge twist.
@@Jedi_Are_Scum thanks!
This scene is after he gets off the island which means this is after his dad died, WHY DOES HE TALK LIKE HIS FATHER IS ALIVE!!! I'm so confused please help me!!!
M4VERICK2022 he's going crazy, he's delusional. That's why he does not realize his father passed away.
i automatically thought two things, or he is being sarcastic "bring my father down here" since he is dead, down here meaning from heaven on something. or he was being delusional. he's clearly going through some shit. the writers can get away with it.
Wow. It's not that hard to understand people. He's saying dig his father up and get him down to the hospital. He's being a smartass. Saying his father was such a drunk that after being dead for years he'd still be drunker than Jack was. But they had to have Jack say it this way, bc the reveal that this is the flash forward timeline hasn't happened yet.
@oceanicflightdown overrated........ HA! i get the joke now. wait, that was a joke right?
Why do people do this to themselves? Get drunk all you want but stay away from your place of work, you're a doctor for goodness sake. Does he think losing his licence will make things better?
Well he was suicidal at this point, I don't think he cared about anything
@@judigemini178 Yeah, it was way beyond losing his license. That was the last thing on his mind in this state.
Wasn't his father already dead at this timeline? So why would he ask to see who is more drunk (him or his father)?
I guess he was so drunk he forgot his fathers death for that moment
@@SeriousJohnnyDay I think that the writers made an error in the time line and forgot that this is occurring in the future.
I think he ment down here from heaven?
Rizwan Rasheed I really don’t think that was an error
@@SeriousJohnnyDay It wasn't. It was intentional, it was the writers' way to try and throw fans off the scent who might have been putting together at this point that this was taking place in the future. Jack referencing his father as if he were alive perpetuates the false tone one more time that this is a standard flashback. From a perspective of Jack's character, it can be reasoned that he says in a very darkly ironic way. If he's more drunk than his father then the doctor can fire him, that's his challenge. Its a challenge he wins by default because his father has already drank himself to death by this point. He can't be more drunk than a dead person who died from drinking.
Episode??
Season three finale. Episode is called Through the Looking Glass
