One of the best emotional scenes of Season 1, you can feel the pain in Jack when Sawyer is talking...also shows what type of man Sawyer really is telling the story to Jack knowing that it will heal him in some way...

This really is one of the greatest scenes in Lost history.. very, very touching. They both are very good in this scene, especially how I can see in Jack's face, not even saying a word, how deeply he is feeling this whole thing.

I loved this storyline. Too alpha males who never liked one another but you could tell had the respect for another and neither were going to give up who they were. Sawyer knew that one of the reasons Jack was cut the way he was was because of the relationship he had with his father as well as the lack of closure he got before his father died. It was one of the few early moments of human vulnerability between both characters in the series.

I remember when I first saw this scenes...I thought that these guys would have struggled a little bit more but would have ended up being like the best of friends...or sort of...Sawyer resembled Christian in many ways, so in getting along with him Jack would have found a little bit of redemption for the tough relationship he had with his father...I hate that it didn't happen mostly because of the damn love triangle with Kate which I always thought to be unnecessary....all that it was needed was another strong female character in the series from season 2, which I thought it would have ended up being Ana Lucia...that didn't happen either, unfortunately, and Juliet just didn't cut it and that damn Kate bouncing back and forth between these two ruined everything.

I think Sawyer bears some responsibility for Christian's death. I mean, Christian didn't have his wallet, Sawyer bought an entire bottle of whiskey for them to share, only to (most likely) leave right after the scene was over and thus Christian with the entire bottle.
Of course, Christian didn't do Sawyer any favors here either by encouraging him to finish his "business".

Basically Sawyer is saying that parents are who we look up to, trust and love. They are our most influential teachers in life. Abusive parents are manipulators, a child's most crucial learning is when they are 4 or 5, so when getting whacked around and told they are bad they think its true. like a puppy they are taught in a very similar way . Christian was an abusive prick and Jack took his shit all his life. Jack's revenge was taking away what mattered most, and making him a disgraced MD.

It's scenes like this that remind me how much I loved Lost (I tend to forget that after the abysmal 5th and 6th seasons). The writing it brilliant; Jack's dad's dialogue develops his character so much and shows the motivations behind his behaviour, and the advice he gives to Sawyer, while great advice under any other circumstance, is the wrong advice for Sawyer's current situation, but how could Jack's dad have known that?
Both characters have skeletons in the closet, and both ended up doing the opposite of what was necessary to solve them, all due to a chance encounter, and all the moments we had with them leading up to this scene in previous episodes made it work so well.
While seasons 5 and 6 were terrible and season 4 was a step down in quality, seasons 1 to 3 are some of the best television ever to air. To anybody who wishes to watch this series, I'd still recommend the hell out of it (just stop watching after the season 4 finale, no matter how tempting it may be to continue on).
