    I didn't have the money when I got my puppy to buy puppy pads so I took an outside picnic table cover. I cut it up into four pieces and it works great. I Rinse it off in the shower with a sprayer and then toss it in the wash. Before I used it though I sewed the edges that I cut So it wouldn't fray in the wash.

      Hi Joyce! I just stumbled upon your video, and had to subscribe. Thank you for the info! I’ve decided to use pee pads for my 9.5 week Yorkie. She is adapting well to them. I learned from another UA-camr, that when the dog is confined in an area, to be sure it is just large enough for her bed, her food and water, and her pee pad holder with pee pad. I started doing that, and it works great! She is learning what the pee pad holder is for, and that she sleeps in her bed, and uses the pee pad for her pee and poo. I love watching the little wheels in her brain turning as she jumps from her bed to the pee pad, and then back into her bed. In another three weeks, I will remove the pee pad holder from the confinement pen, and move it to the area in the bathroom where it will remain. At that time, I will begin serious potty training, but she will have already learned what the pee pad and holder are for. I look forward to more videos from you.

    I have used absorbent cleaning towels on a water proof tray which was custom made. I also have a very small front loader just for these towels. Well the initial cost including the second hand washer was about $250 at 2015 but overall I think it was all worth it for two small dogs. I personally dislike using disposable pads as they you know....

    I'm using fabric pee pads and love them for my chihuahua. I just lay one on top of rubber nonslip bath mat on the bathroom floor. I pick up the poop and flush asap. After a day or two I rinse it good on the shower floor with the shower head, squirt a couple sprays of Odo-B-Gone on it then hang over a bar to drip dry. When I have a pile of the drip dried pads I wash and dry them in the machine. I have NEVER had an unpleasant smell from this system. My only question is which fabric pads are best and why. Right now I'm leaning towards the brand Poochpads.

    • @DiamondDogTraining
      @DiamondDogTraining  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Dixie, Thank you for all the information. Your system sounds great. i have a question please. My girls do not like to pee on a soiled pad. They will dig up the soiled pad and move it to the side. Will your Chihuahua reuse the fabric pee pad after your dog has peed on it. Or do you change the fabric paid each time. What size pad do you buy. i do not even know if I ordered the right pad. i would appreciate your opinion. i have had requests to do a video comparing disposable pads to washable pads. With your help, I may have enough information to do the video. would you be willing to take video of your chihuahua peeing on the washable pad. Also video of the clean pad on the floor. I just looked at Poochpads. They look to be a good quality. i will do a lot more research to do the video comparing the disposable pads to washable pads. The pack I ordered for the video was a 4 pack 30x34 under pads, pet pads. honestly you have more knowledge of the pads than I do. Is that a good pad to use? i was hesitant to change my dogs to the reusable pads and upset their schedule. They are so good to use the disposable pee pads. I was afraid they would start peeing on the carpet. do you have any problem with your dog getting confused. Sorry for all the questions. i would like to do a comparison but did not want change my dogs schedule. if you will send me pictures to use and give me your experience, i can do the video. Me too. Other people have asked me to do a video comparing the two. I don’t like using the pads because of the environment. But my dogs have never used washable pads and I am afraid of creating problems with my dogs potty habits. They are 100% potty trained to pads. Do you have questions and suggestions to include in a video. I also have a very old washer and think washing to pads so often will cause me problems. Well there I think I just did a video. My puppy tries to tear the grass out. It's a pain spraying it off Clean and STINKS if you don't. • @DiamondDogTraining
      @DiamondDogTraining  3 роки тому +1

      Hi, I actually agree with you. I use the disposable pads. For me they work the best. I just think rinsing the washable pads and washing them every time my dog pees on them is more work than changing the disposable pads. My dogs do not like to pee on a used pad. So when they peed on a washable pad , I would be washing them all the time. The one drawback is the disposable pads are not recyclable. That bothers me. Thank you for your opinion. Joyce

      Cynthia, i am sorry, Is your dog a large or small size? I think this would make a difference. If she cannot go down the stairs, it sounds like she is too big to carry.
      Can you make a ramp for her to walk up and down? Just a thought.
      You can either use the washable pee pads or the articficial or real grass.
      Check out my videos on Indoor Potty Training.
      If your dog is large, you will have to replace the grass frequently and wash the pads a lot.
      Do you have a balcony or side portch on that level or an extra bathroom with a walk in shower.
      Pleae let me know your layout for your house and maybe I can help you find a place to use. Thank you. Joyce

      Diamond Dog Training we have a now 13 week red doberman puppy that nips ...a lot. Trying a few of your techniques. We are at the cottage but heading home soon and will get a kong. She’s a smart pup but trying to dominate kids (eg herding them: nipping at their knees/ankles). This behaviour is making it hard to have my son make a real connection with her. It’s definitely a process

    I love your idea regarding indoor potty training. I wasn't too much of a grass person because the whole rinsing out was too much for me and my dog would eat the one with the real grass.
    He actually does well with potty pads and I used them for a long time that is until I wanted to get something more biodegradable.
    You might find this nutty but what I did was that I put kraft paper I have lots from deliveries...on top of this indoor potty the crate part and put cardboard inside the drainage area. Yes it is a bit to clean....but not too much if you have the right system.
    I was thinking about the environment so this is what worked best for me.

    I'm so extremely done with the pee pads smell already only thing I like is the ease of picking them up and tossing them out so I've been curious about the washable one's but I wouldn't put those in my washer regardless if I sanitize my washer afterwards. I mean when my children would have accidents in there pants I'd rinse them out and preclean with soap hand dry if I shared a washer and dryer then once I was going to wash I'd throw those in but they are preclean so I figured I'd do that with the washable ones. I have yet to buy them😅 I'm curious how many times my small dog can use the restroom on them before needing to be replaced. With pee pads it's 3/4x max. Then I'm curious to know if the smell would hit you all at once if you were to hand wash them. There should be a doggy laundry company where every week or 2weeks you place the bag filled with dirty pads outside and receive some fresh pads that way the only thing you'd need to do is place the used ones in a smell proof bag to be picked up and washed for you 😊 if only!

    • @DiamondDogTraining
      @DiamondDogTraining  Рік тому

      Great idea. I would consider using the washable pads if there ever was a doggy laundry😊. Seriously I can’t get past the fact of putting the soiled pads in the washer every couple days. My girls only use a pee pad a couple times before I must pick it up and throw away. The number of washable pads I would need and the number of loads of wash just does not seem feasible to me. One person wrote she bought a used washer just for the pads. Maybe that is a. Option for you . It is not for me. I put a mask on when I am picking up the soiled paper pads and always wear a mask when I take them out of the closed garbage can and take them outside to the garbage can. I found the odor is much less. I gate the idea the paper pads are not recyclable. If you have a solution which works for you, please let me know. I a. Sure there are many people who are in the same dilemma. Thank you so much for your comment. Joyce

    We are hand raising 4 puppies since the mother is too sick to feed them. We have been using the disposable puppy pads since they were 2.5 weeks old and opened their eyes. Too young? Maybe but our little 300 gram babies have been using them since I wrapped one over a piece of fake grass (did this to help the puppy pad feel soft on their fragile little paws). They miss quite regularly and pee half on and half off the pad. They think if their front paws are on the pad that they got it. We couldn’t believe it worked when they were so young but it did. We do still have the occasional accident in their bed but overall 85-90% of the time they get up and go to the pad, it’s just a matter of changing the pad regularly but the blanket only once or (if one wets the bed) twice a day. Thanks for this video I was looking at getting fake lawn in the box but with four of them going on and off all day (their bladders only hold about an eyedropper full at a time) but I think it would get smelly very quickly and we would need about 3 of them to give them time to dry between washes as they go so often. We can’t let them get wet at this point so the lawn would have to be dry.

    I’m getting a new puppy in a few days. My plan is to use the washable potty pads under artificial grass. I will have one just inside the door in case she needs it when I’m away, one just outside the door on the covered deck so no rain or snow issues and a large piece the length of the deck at the bottom of the straits. It will be fenced in so she has more freedom and it will drain onto the gravel underneath it and I can hose it down when needed. All areas are the same artificial grass that hopefully she will recognize if we are somewhere with real grass available. What do you think?

      @@DiamondDogTraining well it sounded like a good idea at the time. About 80% of the time she poops on the mats but 100% of the time she pees elsewhere. I put her on the mat after waking or other logical times. She runs right off it and pees somewhere else, sometimes only inches from the mat. It is getting pretty frustrating. Sometimes she is on the mat, starts to pee and as soon as I look at her she runs off and pees where I can’t see her. I just don’t understand.

      @@sherryleggett1612 hi Sherry, have you made the area of grass enclosed so she cannot leave the area until she pees. You could use sections of a plastic puppy pen to block her on the grass. Or put the grass inside a puppy pen and close the door . It sounds like your puppy has an open area to keep and we need to confine her more. Or you can keep a harness and leash on her and walk her to the grass area and stay with her holding the leash until she pees or poops. Then give a treat and have a party. Let me know how you are doing. It takes time and patience and always reward with a treat for potty. Hope this helps. Thank you . Joyce

    I just recently got a miniature schnauzer pup and set up a potty pad area for him it is hit or miss for a start but can see he is getting used to it and starting to go to it himself however I do find I have the problem of him only wanting to use it to pee. Once done and he feels he still needs to poo he goes to find another spot in my apartment which obviously doesn't have the pads. Any suggestions on how to get the puppy to do both on the pads?

    • @DiamondDogTraining
      @DiamondDogTraining  Рік тому

      Thank you for your comment. Peeing is easier for some puppies because they go to the pad and pee. Poo frequently means a puppy needs to move around. Try fencing an area with a puppy pen or gate and putting down many more pee pads I a large area. Your puppy will choose the area he likes to poo and you can decrease the area of the pads. Try to not let him move out of that area unless he is finished. You can also put a leash on your puppy and attach the leash to you for 20 minutes and then take him back to the area. Hope this helps . We will have a balcony, I have a young son who can help, but I live in south Texas, and hear and smell and bugs are a real issue for outside. I’ve just started watching ur videos and would like any advice u can offer. We will be up on one of the top floors and they have never had a situation like this before. They are 5, 4, & 3 years old and have never used pads. I’m gonna start training them with pads this week. I’d love to see the doggy lawn and fresh patch as well as the disposal pads and washable ones. Hope I haven’t overwhelmed u!!! I’ll keep doing research! We were considering getting a synthetic grass patch as it's cheaper than fresh grass and then laying puppy pads in the rest of the playpen to avoid accidents on the floor. Is this a good idea? I am also wondering if the room will smell too much or if the puppy will avoid using it again if the poo is left on the grass for such a long time?

      Thank you for helping the person who is Ill. Here are 2 suggestions. There is an Iris pad holder which the pads fit into and then are clamped in place. This might work for your puppy . You can see the Iris pad holder in my videos. My concern is your puppy is in the same area as the pads for hours and may start to dig at the center to shred the pads. Can you put more distance between the pee pads and the puppy. Can you use the crate as the play area and surround the crate with a puppy pen where you put the pads further away from where the puppy is playing . You can attach the ends of the pen to the crate to give puppy more room to move and play. 3rd idea is to buy the Doggie Bathroom which makes the potty area separate from the play area. And the 4th suggestion is to use real grass like Fresh Patch which you throw away every few weeks. Puppy may chew the grass. I think even though you are leaving toys while you are at work, your puppy is bored. Have you given puppy stuffed frozen Kong or. Raw bones or Himalayan Chew. Let me know if any of these ideas help. Thank you, Joyce

I do have my puppy in one crate it is very large for her it’s like 42“ x 30“ it belong to another dog a big dog I’ve put a divider in it like a window where she can get through from her sleep play area to her potty area so she’s completely separated from that. That gives her more space to move around as far as a playpen I don’t have space to put a playpen in my living room I’d have to remove my sofa or my TV unit and possibly an end table
      So I can’t really go that route. But I am going to try the iris P pad protector if that’s what it’s called I did see your video and I like it and I am going to try that and I’m gonna put that inside her crate to see if she will leave the pet alone. Interestingly, I find him hesitant to get on the tray, or likes to pull and scratch the pad on the tray but much less to a flat pad...

But he will then enjoy holding the leash and play tug war. I have already practiced feeding him while on leash. He won't care about the leash when running around in the house or have other toys to chew. Is there a better way to let him stay calm and potty?
      A separate question, he still sometimes pee on the carpet rather than going to the bathroom's pad BY HIMSELF, even though the pad is accessible, and the only place to get a reward after potty. Hi, your puppy does not understand where to pee and doo doo. We need to make your area much smaller. Use gates and puppy pens to block off an area for your puppy. Put pee pads to cover the entire floor so he cannot make a mistake. you can also use real grass mat in the apartment or on a balcony. Hope this helps. Please send more questions. Thank you. Joyce

      Always reward your puppy with yummy treat when he pees on the pee pad and be very happy. Praise and love your puppy will help the learn you want them to pee on the pee pads. Eventually you canreduce the area of the pee pads to a small section of the puppy pen. When your puppy is peeing on the pee pads, then you can move the puppy pen to make it a little large. Remember, puppies will always walk away from where they eat and sleep to pee. you have to increase the area so slowly to prevent accidents. Let me know how you are doing. joyce

      A couple thoughts. You can use a puppy pen to confine your puppy when you cannot watching the puppy. In the puppy pen, you would put a small bed and toys and cover the remainder of the pen with pads. When you can watch your puppy, you can open the puppy pen to create a slightly larger area with access to the pads but use the stretched open pen or gates to prevent your puppy from venturing too far away from the pads. That is what I meant by creating a smaller space. Also if your puppy likes grass, you can introduce the real grass Fresh Patch which your puppy might like more than pads. Having a feeding schedule is really important to know when your puppy needs to Lee and poop. Are you leaving food in the bowl all the time. Free feeding. Are you doing that for a reason. Is your puppy very small. You can begin offering your puppy 4 small meals. If your puppy is a good eater, you can reduce to 3 meals and eliminate the free feeding which will help the potty training. Tell me more about your feeding routine.

    • @DiamondDogTraining
      @DiamondDogTraining  3 роки тому +1

      A feeding schedule to feed 3 times a day would be breakfast at 6:30, lunch at 12:00 noon and dinner at 6:30pm. This is just an example. You would then look at your schedule and see how to adapt the puppy’s meals to your life. Hope this helps. What are you feeding your puppy. Your puppy is probably teething now because it is 6 months old. The dry food may be too hard to chew. You may want to add some water to soften the food to make it easier to chew

      When I got my maltese back in 2001 I had carpet. I used puppy pads and I took him out when I came home for lunch and at the end of the work day. He would use the pads, but sometimes would go on the carpet. I was so frustrated...finally after he messed up the carpet so much, I took out the carpet and put in luxury vinyl. That worked...no more accidents. I finally figured out when talking to many people, whenever there was carpet in the home, dogs had a harder time with potty training.

You put a puppy pad under it. You can spray it if you want with a mixture of water and a little ivory liquid or other mild detergent and follow with plain water. Then roll it to the side, role the puppy pad as well, replace the pad on that side b4 doing the same with the other...vuala!! It is best NOT 2 wash it emediately anyway as you want to attract your dog to that patch. I've trained many dogs...it works. Take care

      @@DiamondDogTraining I change out the pine pellets about once a week. As when a dog or cat urinates on them the pellets dissolve into saw dust.
      To help with the process, I bought a sifting cat litter box that I use as an aid to clean out my doggy litter box.
      Since I remove all solids from the litter box and flush them down the toilet as soon as I see them, I empty the litter box contents into the cat sifter with the cat litter box sitting below the sifter.
      Next I sift out all the sawdust into the cat litter box below the sifter. When all that remains in the sifter are pine pellets, I then empty the sifter contents back into the litter box and add about a scoop to a scoop and a half of fresh pine pellets to replenish the pine pellets that were used.
      Lastly, I empty the cat litter box with the saw dust in it into the trash since it is odorless. Wipe everything down with paper towels and put every thing up until the next time .
      The entire process probably takes under five minutes.
      I purchased 40 pound bag of pine pellets at Tractor Supply Company for $6.79 a bag plus tax. I expect to go through about two to three bags a year.
      Moreover, pine pellets also eliminate virtually all odors and they are quite easy to work with. Hence, I highly recommend using pine pellets as litter material and especially if you live in an apartment. Another advantage is they are quite a bit cheaper than other litter materials.
      As for as a mess goes, there are a few pellets that escape the doggy litter box and onto the floor as the week goes by at the entrance to the doggy litter box situated in my bathroom, but it takes me less than 30 seconds each week to vacuum them up.
      Since you live in an apartment complex, there is no more elegant solution for potty training your Chihuahua or any other small breed dog. Not to mention that the simple process of training if strictly adhered to is super simple and easy as the puppy actually trains itself. As it never has an opportunity to learn any bad behaviors.
      Not to mention the process is not only much faster relative to other training methods, but my new Chihuahua has not had even one puppy mistake inside my home since I got her and that's a first for me. Knock on wood.
      As you won't have to worry about maintaining a strict schedule to let your puppy outside periodically, plus the time involved with doing that, which is a major advantage especially if you live in an upstairs apartment.
      You want have to worry about whether it is snowing, raining, freezing, or too hot either.
      You want have to worry about leaving your Chihuahua home alone for extended periods of time.
      You want have to worry about fleas, ticks, mosquitos, or your dog catching a disease that another dog left behind.
      You also won't have to worry about your tiny Chihuahua being attacked by a larger dog.
      Hence, overall, whether you live in an apartment complex or a home, it is by far the best solution.

    • @bullfrog5037
      @bullfrog5037 Рік тому

      @@DiamondDogTraining This is the way I recently potty trained my Chihuahua. I litter trained it, as opposed to letting it go outside, and it was by far the easiest and the best method I have ever used.
      So what I did was purchase a 24 X 18 wire doggy crate and put a doggy bed, a doggy blanket, and some doggy toys inside it.
      At the same time, I also purchased a 24 X 18 solid plastic container with high sides that I customized into my new doggy litter box by using a hack saw to cut out an opening on one side of the container large enough so a Chihuahua can enter and exit it easily. Then I added an inch layer of pine pellets to the floor as the litter material.
      Next, with the Chihuahua puppy inside the doggy crate I butted the doggy crate opening to the doggy litter box opening. As the idea was that the Chihuahua puppy would sleep and play in the doggy crate but when it needed to eliminate, it would eliminate in the doggy litter box. Guess what, it worked like a charm.
      So for the first three weeks, I kept this up only letting the Chihuahua puppy out to bond and play after I saw that it had very recently eliminated.
      Then after three weeks, I slid the doggy litter box out about a foot and a half away from the doggy crate. Then I monitored my new puppy closely throughout the day to see if she was using the doggy litter box like she was supposed to, and she did flawlessly.
      Then subsequently, I slid the doggy litter box on each successive day a little closer and closer to the final designated location for the doggy litter box I had previously picked out. When the litter box was in its final designated location, I then considered my new puppy fully potty trained.
      In any event, this was not only by far the easiest time I ever had potty training a Chihuahua puppy, but it was the first time I ever trained a Chihuahua puppy without having any puppy mistakes.
      Moreover, a litter box, as far as I'm concerned, is not only the easiest way to train your pet because your pet essentially trains itself, but overall it's the best solution as well. As I don't have to worry about maintaining a set schedule to let my puppy out. I don't have to worry about whether it is snowing or raining outside or if it is freezing or too hot. I also don't have to worry about leaving the puppy alone for an extended time period. I also don't have to worry about fleas, ticks, mosquitos, or my dog getting a disease another dog left behind. I also don't have to worry about other dogs attacking tiny Chihuahua since she always remains inside the home.
      As far as the litter material goes, I highly recommend pine pellets because it virtually eliminates all odors and it is quite easy to work with. It's also far cheaper than other kinds of litter materials and does a far better job at eliminating odors. As you can buy a 40 pound bag of the stuff at Tractor Supply Company for $6.79 plus tax and you will use only about two to maybe three bags a year. Meanwhile, when a dog or cat urinates on the pellets, the pellets disintegrate into odorless saw dust.
      To make cleaning my doggy litter box easy, I purchased a sifting cat litter box as a cleaning aid only. So what I do to clean the litter box since I always flush down the toilet any solids as soon as I see them, is empty the doggy litter box in the sifter of the cat litter box. Then I sift the sawdust in the sifter into the cat litter box below. When all that remains in the sifter is pine pellets, I then empty the sifter back into my doggy litter box and then add about a scoop to a scoop and a half of pine pellets to make up for what was used. Then I empty the sawdust in the cat litter box from below the sifter into the trash since it is odorless. Lastly, I wipe everything down and put everything up until the next time. As I clean my doggy litter box out about once a week.
