I have a 223/233 cam with .629 lift in an 11.5:1 418ci L92. It was the first engine i tuned ans took a long time, but idles relatively smooth. Many have doubted it was more than a stock 5.3 while it was idling. Evryone "cammed" truck in my area has "chop and sounds nasty, but is slow and just a baby cam like mabye 212 dur. But its "mean". Maybe im getting old, but i love great sound at WOT through a 3.5" straight through 31" long muffler wuth a mild, smooth idle and driveability. My truck weighs more on 05+ superduty axles and 37s than many I've walked away from that had "chop".
@biker1007 223/233 in a 418? That's tiny bet it drove great with all the low end power. I have a 224/238 in my ls3, and it drives absolutely stock in a stock converter.
Wow, i didnt know you could adjust it that much. Cool deal. Im new to the Ls platform. Still learning what can be tuned and what cant. Thats why i aint tuning it lol. A PROfessioal will be tuning my car once the swap is done.
Cam with more overlap will always have a different sound, but some of these tuners out here hack it so bad they try to make a stock cam sound like it has 30* of overlap.
@andrewd843 Geez!! It effects everything else when you do that. Like putting big a** tires on cars. It effects the shift points and pretty much everything else. I've seen them burn up engines and transmissions if the gearing and tuning are not changed to compensate for them 24"s and 26"s lol.
A tune really wakes trucks up. When it comes to actual parts/combinations I usually try to get a budget plus goals. What one person thinks is quick others will want more power.
imo the vette clip at the end still sounds pretty lope-y to me, assuming a good tune how far from stock could you go with a cam and still really maintain that stock idle sound and low end drivability?
That's because it has 30+ * of overlap that's a large cam, the chop isn't from timing manipulation. Can go pretty decent and not have it chop at all or drive bad.
I never cared for the sound... I got my off the shelf BTR cam because of the research I did and after talking to them and my tuner. Having said all that... Shhhh you are exposing secrets 😂😂😂😂😂

Never had a cammed car, i wanted to experience it so I finally did it went custom with the lsa supercharger and but now I have some weird surge and sometimes car dies when i come to a stop.. my tuner somewhat fixed that but the car in gear sounds different almost non cammed and it wants to push forward and will get up to 20mph with no pedal input. I bought a hp tuner to try learning on my own but been watching videos and reading to gain some knowledge before messing with it
@andrewd843 it's a ZL1 torque converter, and cam is from GP tuning, suppose to be custom grind. I have the specs back at home, It was something like 229 / 242

I remember years back comp cams came out with a SBC cam that was a stock cam but they made ut lope really badly. STUPID!!!!!! A little lope sounds cool. Alot NO LOL
Next you can explain why stage cams suck 90% of the time and custom is the way to go. Or a generic NA cam that works well not running same et is bc combo is fit around the whole combo not just camshaft. I can't stand someone asking me what stage my cam is 🥴

For example: Going off names, you'd think a BTR LS3 stage 3 would be decently larger vs. a TSP LS3 stage 2. The tsp stage 2 and btr stage 3 have identical duration at .050 and lift is within .001. Yea you can tune the lope out of the cam. Thats true. I just want a slight lope. I dont want it to barely run or have vacuum issues lol.

I bought a used GTO with built heads and I’d say a big cam because it chopped hard at 850 rpm and the car would shake hard. I miss that car
Probably stock cam and bad tuning, as this video showed.
I love the sound of a cam but I hate modifications that only go for looks and sound. I want a cam and long tubes for power nothing else.

Surging and dying is from a tune issue.
What cam and what converter?

@liro213 that's all tuning issues. Zl1 converter should handle that fine. I've done some 23x/25x on zl1 converters, and they didn't push or surge.
