  • In this video chat from the American Crochet Association, we outline things every crochet instructor should do (and, some things that most are doing wrong when they try to teach):
    1) Give individual (not group) lessons
    2) Offer beginner crochet supplies
    3) Start with the basics (not a project)

This is the first time I have come across your channel, and so glad I did. Thank you for your tips and suggestions. I am in South Africa and taught myself to crochet by watching a you tube channel. I Stat from 8 am to 9pm, pushing pause stop, start on the video and pulling out the work and starting it again and again till I got it. They where teaching the granny square and by 9pm it just clicked and I made my very first blanket that I finished in about a month and have never turned back. I love crocheting and have crocheted blankets, toys, baby cloths you name it and I am still learning. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge.

Great advices, I agree with all three. I did my first crochet class, with my sister a few months ago, and we had 4 people (supposed to have 5, but one of them canceled), and in the and we were like , good that she canceled😂.
    Absolute begginers need absolute attention.🙂
    Thanks for this video😊

I am new to ACA - had no idea it existed - a former Knitter - that is all I did - knitting. Learned about crochet from a friend.
Got some books and that was the beginning - here I am today still crocheting and having tremendous fun - I get to do this every day or any time I like - I am a Senior and loving it‼️‼️‼️ Yarn shopping is my best fun and I am crocheting for a young AMN Club on the AFB I used to work. Since I was a young wife to an AMN at one time., I know getting these nice blankets was always welcome. I am doing my best and learned so very much since those beginnings. I am still learning and that is why I watch your Video’s. Just keep an teaching and I love to listen and you make learning fun. Sincerely Christa D.

21:15 I actually like teaching with some variegated yarns, because I can say, “ok, you see that red V right there? Go into that. You can see your yellow and green loops on your hook? There should be 3.” Etc. Etc. I find the visual cues helpful, but it has to be the right variegation.

My aunt had crochet hooks and books when she was staying with us. So it was summertime I was 14 yrs old and I took one of the books it was ‘Illustrated Patchwork Crochet’ by Bella Scharf and learned stitches and worked on making the granny square patterns in the book.

I must disagree with #1. I've been teaching groups of 5 and 6 beginners for over 5 years and have not found a problem with it. Although, that would be the max and 2 students would be ideal. But 4 to 6 student makes a fun class.

Thank you for your feedback! Beginners just need more one-on-one time, support and encouragement. And so, to keep classes down to a good minimum time, and assure every student is learning and progressing individually, we don't recommend more than 2 at a time.

Keep it simples, no extraneous dialogue, stop the long, sappy intros. No one cares. -
