This recipe is a game-changer! Spending just 45 minutes for a homemade tomato soup is absolutely worth it. I'm a big tomato soup aficionado, and not long ago, I made a veggie soup with roasted tomatoes. The roux addition for thickening is genius. Can't wait to top mine with some fresh basil and dive in. Thanks for sharing this delightful treat!👍👍👍
I had to send a message, I love tomato - basil soup and this recipe looked great. I had fresh tomatoes and used about 10 lbs to make a large pot. Everything went as planned and the "stick blender" is a real time saver in getting the tomatoes and everything else blended. I did add about 1/3 cup fresh basil chopped small in the last 15 minutes of simmering along with 1/2 quart of heavy cream. I WAS IN HEAVEN when I took a taste !!!! You have to try this recipe as it is the absolute best and you will never go back to canned tomato soup again, Thanks !!!
Made this, but didn’t add the rue or clove. My gosh it was delicious! I didn’t expect it to be so flavourful! I added the tiniest of chilli just for that little bit of extra heat
Thank you for your comment. You can definitely try using vegetable or olive oil instead of butter in this recipe and cut down the amount to 1 tablespoon. Happy cooking!
I just bought a kilogram of fresh tomatoes from our local farmer and was looking for recipes on what to do with them. :) I’ve decided to make this since I already have all the ingredients. :) Thanks for this!
Bit late to the party but, Thank You SO much for this recipe. First reasonable recipe I've found that doesn't start off with "Canned, Store bought Tomato's" Your process for cooking Tomato's down, skin on, adds nutrients and naturally helps thicken the sauce from the start. Take out the onions and food milling it is exactly our base sauce! The Tomato Rue is genius. We grow our own garlic, onions, and Tomato's, So, add flour and butter, and chicken broth, (we all have that).............. Voila
This recipe is just what I was looking for to use up some very ripe tomatoes. Some were the last of my home crop and some were store bought. I used the immersion blender method to smooth the soup. It worked pretty well, and was certainly easy (careful not to splash!) though there were some skin bits left behind. I might simply need to blend it for longer, or maybe use the Ninja blender, being careful not to create a heat bomb. (Yes, I have cleaned the kitchen ceiling due to mishaps of that nature!) I added a cup of half and half at the very end, because I like creamy tomato soup best. The salt needed to be upped a bit to compensate. I also added a dash of allspice; not enough to notice, just enough for a warm complexity. Paired with grilled cheese, it had Hubby mmmmm-ing with pleasure. It really was delicious. Win! Many variations could be imagined using this excellent recipe as a base. Thanks a bunch!
Thank you for your question. The soup needs to cook so that the vegetables completely soften up and can puree easily. If you prefer a chunkier soup, you can certainly cook it for a shorter period. Once you add the roux, you should cook the soup for a while to make sure the taste of flour is cooked out. Enjoy!
Good for you, See_Ed_Run! Glad you like the soup. Practice a little on making the roux--it gets easier!--and you'll be a real rock star in the kitchen.
Cloves...They're a spice unto themselves. Sometimes you'll hear people talk about a clove of garlic, but that's not what she's talking about here. Cloves are actually dried up flower buds.
That's a great idea to add potatoes into the soup. You can peel, dice, and simmer potatoes separately and then add them to the soup, at the end, to reheat. Let us know how the soup tastes for you! Happy cooking.
Wouldn't it be better to use vegetable stock instead of chicken stock? What about the seeds, how do I get rid of them? I ask because in your video I didn't see any seeds when you was using the blender.
This was delicious. If I make it again I will probably only use two cloves instead of four. I also used a gluten free flour and coconut sugar instead of white refined sugar.
Yes, you can. Just be careful with the lid I would leave the top cap open and have a washcloth over it. Since its hot it could pop off the top lid of the blender.
😋I love to try homemade tomato soup, normally I have confess my mother and I brought readymade powder soup than real homemade,so what is suitable homemade soup or readymade powder soup? What did u think and suggest the best option?
I think whatever suits your circumstances e.g. availability, finances, tastes, cooking utensils, kitchen skills, etc etc etc. I've been reading the comments and it looks like the homemade soup is winning. Good luck my friend.
Could anyone tell me if I can use vegetable stock instead of chicken stock? Also in her video I didn't see any seeds when she was using the blender, how do I get rid of them if it's necessary?
Thanks for your question, Sam Lawson - Allrecipes makes it easy for you to double the soup size. This recipe as it's written makes 6 servings. If you want to make it for 12 servings, open the recipe page and click on "Change Servings" just to the right of the text saying "Original recipe makes 6 servings." Then a new box will open asking how many servings you want to make. Type in "12" and click "Adjust Recipe." All the ingredient amounts will automatically change to the correct amounts needed to make more servings. Easy! Here's a link to the recipe: allrecipes.com/recipe/garden-fresh-tomato-soup/detail.aspx Enjoy cooking!
Agave is simply fructose (think soft drinks) with a fancy label that is metabolized by the liver. Simply use a small amount of fruit if needed. Just be aware, all sugar (glucose, dextrose, sucrose, fructose, etc.) use should be moderated.
Hi, abigfanofALL - Thanks for your question. Are you thinking of using water in this recipe to replace the chicken broth? You may do that, but you will want to adjust the seasonings to add more flavor.
i just made it with water and it had very little taste i added a little more butter and some pepper but i would recommend something to give it a boost in consistancy and flavor when using water
Just finished eating a bowl of this soup with a grilled cheese sandwich. This is the absolute best tomato soup I've ever had! I didn't have cloves but it was perfect without it. I bought cloves after it was done, but before I ate any. Can't wait to see how the flavor changes the next time I make this. I used tomatoes from my garden, and maybe that's why, but there were tons of seeds that didn't get blended up. Anyone have tips on that?
I'm curious about the seeds, too. I did my best to seed the toms, but it was a lot of work and I didn't do a perfect job. If there is a secret seed-banishing method, I'd sure like to know!
Thanks for your question, fart king. "Chicken broth" is the liquid that's created when chicken parts are cooked in water. The chicken parts may be bone-in breasts, a whole chicken carcass with most of the meat removed, only the bones, or any combination. To add flavor, the chicken parts are usually cooked with celery, carrots, onion, a bay leaf, and other herbs. These ingredients are typically removed (strained or spooned out) when the broth is used in a recipe so it's just liquid. Hope this helps.
it was really good but i think i am only going to put two whole clovs in next time i did not realize how strong the flavor was i am so going to keep making this i am never going back to caned tomato soup again
Thanks for your question, ANA&NIX VLOGS. Three medium tomatoes will give you about 1-1/2 cups of chopped tomatoes. (The actual amount will depend on how large the tomatoes are.) I think this is the best recipe I have ever made in 14 years... AMAZING. Highly recommend it to everyone else
I made it two times. It was delicious! I added some sautéed carrots, onions and celery for texture. And tortellini made it extra good.
Made this, but didn’t add the rue or clove. My gosh it was delicious! I didn’t expect it to be so flavourful! I added the tiniest of chilli just for that little bit of extra heat

Yes, of course, zeeshan ali. Enjoy your soup!
Cool. I’ve grown so many tomatoes this year I wanted to try making my own soup. I've now made this soup and it was amazingly delicious.

Is there a way to make without chicken broth?
Just go with water i guess. It'll be fine
SO trying this! It looks sooo tasty!
