Mitchell this video is fecking brilliant ! I have 80 coasters and trivets to resin and I was feeling overwhelmed about how I was going to manage to do them because I haven’t resigned anything for over 2 years now , your video has give me some confidence to crack on, thanks mate !
I’m working my way through all your videos and I don’t fast forward at all. You add so many nuggets of information I don’t want to miss anything. I also appreciate other peoples comments and your response. I’m reading all of those as well. I’m learning so much and truly appreciate you and your willingness to share your knowledge with us. Thanks so much. 💞
What a great video! I've needed to see a step by step. And WOW- it showed up amazingly on that album!!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and process!
Oh wow ! I learned so much through this video. Wish I had a brother who would make me coasters and a clock ! I just ordered this same resin for my next attempt. Next time I'm going to use my hands & apply along the edges, etc. Never thought of that - probably less wasted resin and less drips. This was excellent, You are my new favorite art instructor ! Thank you !!!
That's great to hear! And I barely have any resin wastage since I started doing it this was. I go through gloves like crazy though! Hahaha. At least I can get through 24 coasters each pair of gloves, and if I had a bigger workbench I could probably mix up more resin and save on a few more pairs. But we work with what we've got :D
What a joy and relief to hear some scientific discussion about the paint and resin. Really appreciate such thoughtful and helpful explanations and tips. Bravo, hooray, etc. thank you.
Wow!! I can’t believe this is the first video of yours I’ve watched. I’ve been resining for two years and this is going to speed up my process x5. Didn’t know about the heat gun or pouring all the resin at one time. Amazing!! No wonder your name keeps coming up. Thank you. 💗
Hi Mitchell…thank you so much for this tutorial on resining…I bought Stonecoat just for my coasters and trivets…I knew you used it and had previously watched you …so I used it for the first time today and did 38 coasters and 4 trivets…must admit it was a marathon…from the levelling and cleaning it’s taken a good few hours…I don’t think anyone who buys these really appreciates the amount of work involved…anyhow..all looks good just now so I’ll see how they are in the morning…I must admit they look great at the mo …I know Stonecoat is a bit more expensive but as I just said to my partner…you get what you pay for…🤞for tomorrow 😀
You are most welcome :) it's good to know that people are finding my help useful and hopefully everyone can benefit from the research and experience I have accumulated over the last 18 months :)
I have been so hesitant to try resin for my finished pieces, but after watching your video, I am ready to give it a go! Thank you so much for the step by step instructions! So very helpful!
This was a really amazing, informative video, Mitchell - thank you for taking us through your entire process! I realized I have been wasting so much resin by pouring way more on than you do and with picking each piece up and using your fingers enables you to place them back down closer to each other than what I've been doing, so you can also have many more tiles in your work with much less space between them. I learned a lot of great tips from you! Again, thanks so much!!
This was fantastic Mitchell! Thank you so much, I learned a lot. I have a couple of questions 1. What temperature do you have your Ozito heat gun on when popping the bubbles? 2. About how far away from the tile do you have the heat gun? Many thanks
I have my heat gun on the highest setting pretty much all the time. I keep the nozzle about 10-20cm away from the surface and only quickly dart in closer here and there if I need push the resin around a little more in spots. You don't want to hold it in one spot or get too close as you can burn the resin which will cause it to yellow.
I tape all of my pieces as there is no way to do so without it. I have seen liquid latex being used but that's far more fussy and time consuming and costly.
Because then I would have a join at the edges where they fold down or up, making whatever I put on there uneven and not level. I have since remove all the cling wrap and replaced it with silicone mats from Fluid-art.co
How do you know how much resin to mix up for the amount of tiles you are using? Awesome video 😄 Brilliant idea with the 2 pair of gloves, shall start doing that.
I took your advice & got the Resin you use. OH my ! Perfect coasters ! I watched video again beforehand. Perfecto ! Do I need a second coat if first coat is perfect ? thank you soooo much !!!
I just watched your fixing resin . Help !!!I messed up about 8 coasters. Someone suggested putting Vaseline on bottom Of project so resin won’t stick. It must have gotten in my gloves when I a Smoothed the resin over the projects. Today it looks like it’s wet with puddles and areas where resin was repelled. I had to leave for a week so I just left it till I return. What if it doesn’t harden? I won’t be able to resin over these .. if by chance it does harden do I apply resin in the recessed areas , let that harden then apply a 3rd coat over the entire project ! Or throw it out ?’
If the resin hardens around the puddles, wipe the puddles with isopropyl alcohol to remove any vaseline still there (I hope you learned to change your gloves between processes!) haha. If it doesn't harden, you'll have to clean everything up with isopropyl alcohol and start again.
@@rainandpours hi I have 91% isopropyl alcohol. Have to wipe down about 10 projects. The 4 I’ve wiped. Down so far are still quite sticky & I’m Constantly changing gloves. I hate to trash all these pieces -:(. Im using paper towels. Should I use a sponge soaked with the alcohol OR just let it dry & wipe it down more in a few hours or days ? I appreciate your help!!! My Using Vaseline on the underside to prevent drips worked in past but NEVER again will I do that.
High humidity causes the surface of the resin to go cloudy (the blush). I don't know what those levels are as each resin is different but under 70% is usually fine
Hey buddy, so if I wanted to put a little sparkle in my resin, something very subtle, what would you recommend. I also don’t need heat protection resin so what resin would suit if I don’t use the one you use. Thanks
Hi.... I tried your method yesterday- NO DRIPS ,NO WASTE- yeah !!! BUT I noticed this morning there are a few small bare spots/crevices more towards the end of this piece & a little spot in the middle of this 8x8 piece.. I just re-watched this resin video & you addressed this - (1) SO, if I wait the 24 hours and apply another coat, should I lightly sand first? This 2nd coat will level out and fix this? (2) ALSO - I used the heat gun for bubbles after I applied that 1st application of resin, it is now 12 hrs & those bubbles are there! Do I sand them & reapply more resin after the 24 hours ? THANK YOU !!!!
Yay! I'm glad my process worked for you! For the second coat I don't find a need to sand if I'm just filling gaps or bare patches and it's within 24-48hrs. If you have bubbles come up you may need to lightly sand just to flatten that layer out, wipe down and then apply a second coat. I add very fine glitter to my resin and I have no issues with bubbles, and I think that does have an impact on the final finish. It also hides a lot of tiny flecks of dust that may land in there while drying. I've got another video on the channel addressing these issues called 'Fixing Resin' which may answer a few more questions.
3-7 days for 'full cure' but up to 30 days for maximum hardness and heat resistance. I just noticed it's actually printed onto the bottle labels as well :D
So Mitchell, I have little divets. Can I just put a bit of resin in those spots & hut it with the heat gun, or do I need to cover the whole thing with second coat? Also, I had a calamity awhile back. The resin hardened almost on contact! So I have a thick glob on part. Is there a remedy?! Of course it was one of my favs & an insert to a jewelry box😩😩😩!! TIA.
Hey Sue! I have another video on my channel called 'Fixing Resin' ua-cam.com/video/iOcmCbBfn2Q/v-deo.html . As for that hardened glob, the only reasons that would have happened is from incorrect mixing or having it sit too long in the cup, or something catalysed the reaction. Make sure to read each and every instruction and measure as accurately as possible. You could try gently sanding that blob down until it's almost level with the surface of the piece, taking care not to sand the actual piece. Then after a wipe down to remove the dust you can apply another layer of resin over the top to even it out. As for the divots you cannot just pour more resin into them as it will leave a visible lip around the holes and not a nice smooth finish. Though you will only need about half the amount of resin as the top coat to cover the whole surface.
how do you handle little small spots that are still indented after the 2nd coat ? My question is this: Rather than re-resin can we just put resin in that little area & heat it with the heat gun ?
I don't usually have issues after the 2nd coat but I can tell you, don't try and spot fill anything as it won't cure evenly and you'll have raised ridges.
@@rainandpours You are absolutely correct as I did try on a practice tile - it didn't work and looks bad. SO - I do have a tile with a 2nd coat and there are still imperfections - put a 3rd coat on it ? Sand it first ? Most of the tiles I did apply 1 coat and they look great - then there are a few that are so-so.....
What pigment would you recommend to mix with the resin to obtain a sparkle yet not overwhelming effect? Any TLP you could recommend? Thanks in advance!
I mention that I use the Artisue sparkle pigment which is now discontinued. The closest thing now would be Pearlex macro pearl. TLP Simplicity is too finely ground to give the same effect and I feel like it might make the resin have a hazy effect rather than the glittery effect.
I use disposable plastic bowls as they have a nice wide base and a thicker top than the old dessert cups I was using. They are cheap but they last a little while and I'm not fussed if they rip or break. They also space the tiles out nicely on my trays so they don't touch eachother.

Fantastic. Every step exactly. Question. How do you keep the backs clean without taping? Both for the paint and the resin.
I tape all of my pieces as there is no way to do so without it. I have seen liquid latex being used but that's far more fussy and time consuming and costly.

They are just disposable plastic party bowls :) They are perfect as they have a nice sturdy base and the tiles don't move around or tip over
I'm curious as to why you wouldn't put your boards lengthwise on the cling wrap and avoid any joins on the top side?
