Little known fact, but the mighty Tenkara Warriors of the Angler-Saxon wars made their chain mail vests from tippet rings.
So funny
Genius
Hahaha best comment I’ve read in days. Well played sir
actually, I thought the reverse was true, an archeologist unearthed one of said warriors chain mail vests and said (he also being an angler) "these little thingies could make swell tippet rings, .......think I'll market them as such"! ;D
When I first got back into fly fishing, I fished with a guy who used them. Tried it for a day and realized I preferred to just use knots.
Best thing about the sport is there are no rules. Do what makes you happy and let others do that too!
As always, thanks for the content!
No rules. But you still prefere to tie a strong knot, instead of a fast or easy one, I bet...
@@CONEHEADDK exactly. The better you are at your knots, the better you are as an angler. Makes no difference how well you cast or present if they come loose once you hook them
@@svutility1 My first "big" sea trout (5-6 pds) came during my veeery skilled letting my rod lay on the ground, while getting rid of some formerly known as tea liquid. Almost gave me an extra probl. "Funny" thing was, since I didn't have the ability to strike, it had swallowed the worm deep, so it was killed. I usually release to not have to carry extra weight. So I cut the line at the mouth, and tied on a new piece of line. But when I was going to clean it at home, I saw two lines out of the mouth. Down right between the gills, where the throat started, two "identical" size 2ish hooks sat point down. The other end of one of the lines had the little curly end, a mono line has, if it's been a knot, whit a snip, that was cut to close.! I aaalways test my knots on the actual thickness of the hook or swivel aso - won't loose the fish of my life on something, that was 100% free to avoid..!!!
@@CONEHEADDK exactly! Always test the knot before you toss it out there. The more you practice it, the better you get. No amount of kit is going to make up for being a bad knot tier
Spot on!
Great video! I suck at fly fishing more than you, so I use micro swivels instead of tippet rings 😂. I make my own leaders, so I’m not afraid to tie knots, it just seems easier to add tippet without eventually shortening the midsection. Plus the benefit of no line twists when casting big flies.
Got to say I use swivels for bass and steelhead. Poppers can twist up when retrieving and steelies roll…leaves will twist it up too.
Love the vid! After 45 years at this fly fishing thing, the simpler the better. Didn’t know any fly fisherman when I started. Just started. Read a book way back then. Still tying the same knots. Turtle, surgeons and the perfection loop. Stay Huge brother.
Well, the leaders you buy are not cheap anymore. All a tippet ring does is reduce the time spent adjusting a leader to turn over the way you want. Are they the end all to be all? No. it's just one more thing to have in your bag of tricks. I myself have been using them for the last 4 seasons, due to age I pre-tippet flies at home now due to it takes me too long on the stream to tie a fly on. don't laugh, you all will get there too. So it's a quick clinch knot and I am in business. It's not perfect but the less fiddling on the stream is the way to go in my opinion. I have gotten more than a season out of one Rio 9' 4x leader- the cost savings may be worth it to some. Do you need them to fish no you don't?
I'm "blind" tto. But I can tie a knot with eyes closed. Exact same moves, turns aso every time. Use both hands and my mouth. Gives peace of mind, that I always know, I've tied the strongest knot possible - with the few % lower breaking point than the line, so it's always at the fly, when it breaks.
amen.
I’m with you there. A lot of our fishing in South Africa is nymphing so it’s easier to tie rigs at home and then just tie on a completely new rig on the water while fishing. Rings are also easy when short-line nymphing for the same reason mentioned above. Depending on the situation I also tie up my own leaders and I don’t really care how much tippet material I loose, just nip it off and tie in a new piece of suitable length. It’s more fun and cheaper. But then how poor does one have to worry about how much tippet one looses? Love your videos Ben.
I just keep lots of tapered leaders with me. They aren't cheap-cheap, but the newer the line is and the fewest knots I have between me and the fly the happier I am. I usually only use tippet for droppers.
As a Euro nymphing tenkara fisherman with three tippet rings on any of the rigs I tie. I want you to know that I’m ok with your feeling about those sweet sweet rings. In fact when I’m standing in the river listening to nothing but the water flowing by I can hardly hear you in my head. I all seriousness thank you for the entertaining content and for helping get my daughter interested in fishing. Keep up the great work Ben or as you’re known in our house Gregory’s dad.
Keep your tippets up! Thanks for the tippets! I WILL use most of them. Love these Ben.
Go, Huge! I stopped using tippet rings after I realized a sighter floated better without them and I didn't need them for anything else either. Tippet tied with any common tippet-to-hook knot to a micro loop on the sighter works reliably, and as good, too, connecting sighter to leader/line. But you knew that. Cheers!
LOL love it. I tried them at one point and found that they cut my line. I really like your video that I watched a while ago where you said learn to tie a knot. LOL. So true. I actually enjoy connecting line and tying on fly's. I got into fly fishing for the beautiful dry fly cast and then 90% of it is not dry fly casting. I would rather catch one fish on a dry than 20 on a nymph but that's just me.
Keep the great videos coming brother .
Oh man, the simplicity of fly fishing is exactly why I got into it. Gear fishing was confusing and overwhelming.
I mean fly fishing is honestly equally complex as conventional tackle. It's also very daunting when people start talking about all the different terminology for adding flurocarbon to your line. Also having different measurement of pound test line. (The entire x system) I am an avid fly fisher and will never understand when people say it's simplistic in nature. For people that have never done it, it's very daunting.
The hi-vis fluorescent colored tenkara lines made of fluorocarbon are really expensive. Tippet rings are the best answer because you can keep on using your pre-measured tenkara casting lines and the tippet is the only thing that needs to be replaced. But, be very careful when you go ring shopping. There are many tippet rings that are not made correctly, some have sharp edges and look like a washer up close (see 1:43 of the video). It’s hard to find good ones that are smooth. Even though I believe tenkara is a good complement to fly fishing (it trains you for stealth and stalking your quarry), I don’t use rings for my primary fly fishing.
Lol. An “angler” began to educate me on how to properly cast. It was a beautiful day, and I was enjoying all of his sage advice. After about a half hour, he must have figured out that I was not a good student, so he switched to complaining about the hot pink piece of foam I was catching all the rainbows on during his seminar.
Too funny. Love the video. I do kind of like tippet rings for one reason. I stillwater fish here in AZ, no rivers, LOL!!! I probably use them incorrectly, but I like to tie my top fly under indicator to short tippet from tippet ring. Longer dropper to bottom fly from tippet ring. It makes it so much easier to change the top fly. I find myself leaving top fly on too long because of the hassle of switching it without the ring. Could leave tag end of surgeons knot and tie to that, but that lasts only a few changes.
If it works, it's right. Ever tested the strenght of the surgeons knot's tag's strenght? Probably not the same..
Good morning Ben,
Yeah some people are way to intense🤣🤣🤣
I use tippet rings and my line straightener is an old bicycle tube🤓
I really suck, but I enjoy listening to you and having a good laugh at myself.
I am so glad I stumbled onto your channel. I have really learned a lot.
I can’t wait till next Monday to see what you have for me! Stay huge👍
I agree. Different strokes aso, but the facts and the science can't be debated.. To claim TRs don't save leader fx - dumb.!
Uh oh..here comes the Leader Straightener Gang..gonna rough you up! 😂 Thanks for all the Huge Tippet Tips. Have a great week Ben! 👍👍🎣
You mean "the Angler Straightener Gang" ?
I, and many others use the tippet ring like you'd use a loop at the end of fly line. Euronymph rigs or something else that is a tight line nymph rig that uses and indicator leader uses a tippet ring. It's 2X or 0X indicator leader tied to the ring. Then tie whatever else on to the end of the ring, and the butt of the indicator leader is preserved.
I got into fly fishing because I thought I saw trout rising, and that why I wasn't catching fish, because they were keyed in on emergers. Turns out I was wrong, but I still got into fly fishing, and I have blast. It's way better than spinning tackle. Like don't get me wrong casting a frog popper and watching it get slammed by a giant largie is a fucking blast but fly fishing is essentially that but on steroids because light tackle. Tippet rings are made of metal. Metal is not light (yeah yeah bead head nymphs but tippet rings add additional and unnecessary weight). Also, you can't fish dry flies with em. I like not having to change my entire rig when I switch flies. I can snip my dry off, tie on a nymph, slap an oros indicator on there, call it good, or vice versa. Can't really do that with tippet rings.
TL;DR: I got into fly fishing because I was a 14 yo idiot that didn't know shit about trout fishing, loved it anyways, mainly because light tackle. Tippet rings are metal, which isn't light. Also, they make switching rigs harder
I use tippet rings on my indicator rigs. Like everyone else, my first nymph is usually a bead head. If that’s not enough weight, I mold various amounts of tungsten putty to the tippet ring. I’m actually impressed with guys that do all their adjustments with split shot, but I don’t like shot except for really big water.
Tippet rings have a place like Euro nymphing because of sighters. That's about the only place I use them.
Oh that's good! I occasionally use tippet rings and I had a good laugh! Thanks Ben for the entertainment!
Thanks Ben! Awesome!
Like one of my favorite Ben rants of all time! I am headed up to the fishing cabin in Idaho this week. I have packed just about evrything you can think of ... but no tippet rings? I probably wont even "drop shot" up there this month. Oh no.
Been using 2 perfection loops to manufacture my own tippet ring. Probably messes something up but still catch some fish. Didn't even know these things existed until i became a fan of these videos. Always tons of humor and great content. Love the comment to just throw dry flies because why not
the perfection loops tend not to transition super well unless you manage to tie them really, really small. but that's what i do too
Ben, it hard to believe anyone would have beef about your tippit ring opinion. But let me say this I'm 67, retired mechanic. I have arthritic sausage fingers. I can tie double surgeon knots all day. Hand me a bag of those friging little rings ill drop 3 or 4 of them before I get one tied. So for me they are an aggravation I just don't need. I'll drft 60 days this summer one thing to remember about fly fishing KISS!
Hey Ben, in the same vein as tippet rings, where do you stand on fly snaps for heavy duty salt water, I use Knot2Kinky titanium wire when the barracuda and needle fish are around and I lose soo many flies not even targeting them? Snaps seem to be useful when you have a bite guard and the fly gets hammered every time something with teeth hits it
Wire ?
I use tippet rings occasionally when I am fishing with a nymph set up but I have found just dry fly fishing to be more challenging and enjoyable and fish 90% of the time with a dry fly. The ring effects the dry fly and therefore is useless when used this way. Stay Huge really enjoy your videos and people take fishing and life to seriously at times.
@@rizzoblam It's the human tippet ring that haunts this channel .
So Tippet rings are out.

I agree with keeping fly fishing simple, partnered up with a guide trip last September on the Big Horn Fort Smith area, prior and post trip throwing a hopper and slaying. Anyways get there day of the float and our guide ties on probably the most complicated rig that will ever be on my line, ever… we catch ok, tons of tangles etc but we do catch, most folks floating throwing much simpler rigs, catching as well, next time over ruling with simpler rig, and if it fails slowly upgrade towards more sophisticated rigs to catch , maybe
floated with a guide recently. He rigged (top to bottom) an indicator, worm, egg and nymph. Had my best day ever on this river. (BTW, all caught on the nymph. He said the worm and egg were just to attract a trout's attention)
@@e3a3c3 we had a dry fly, shrimp, nymph deal, they all hit the nymph too, felt like I was casting a bike chain,
@@danmassaviol8646 Or a string of Christmas lights!
your videos are hilarious.. I do have a legit question. Do you have a suggestion on size of fly rod for mountain lakes vs river fishing? I have a 9ft 5wt which I'm sure will be just fine for mountain lakes, but was curious on your opinion.. not that it matters right? ha
Creative video! I always have me a tippet ring on, they serve their purpose nicely. Doesn't bother the trout either.
Whew this makes me feel better. Totally new to fly fishing so I was youtubing best way to connect sinking leader to tippet and then the orvis video came up saying tippet rings?? I was like wow this a super annoying way of doing it when i finally mastered the perfect loop knot and uni to uni. Maybe this isn't the recommended way but seems way easier then using forceps to try to hold a micro ring which i will inevitably drop and lose anyways. Fun stuff, thanks for the video and laugh.
Awesome. I do use them for my euro setup and I think it makes sense in that case. That's the only time I use them.
Snowboarding!?! Now you've crossed the line sir! I've tried tippet rings a couple times and can't do it. Love the videos. Cheers!
Love the sarcasm! 😂 Fishing is therapy, often overcomplicted by ‘fascionistas’. Time on/at the water is more important than such discussions. Like you said: fish the way you want, don’t waste energy on negative people. Keeping an open mind is great! And I also suck at fishing, I only started catching because 20 years ago a US friend donated me my lucky hat 😉
Thats it, you have clearly crossed a line with tippet rings!!!!!! :D All kidding aside, first gotta say I really love your videos, very funny and informative. I just got into fly fishing from years of tuna fishing (sold my boat) and for now I use tippet rings, only because im that guy always catching trees and bushes, so for now it just makes my life a little easier. Will probably move away from them as soon as my skills improve. It seems much cleaner without them. I also hate the loop to loop connection of floating line to leader, I prefer cutting it off and tying a Snell Knot. Keep up with the great videos.
HUMBLE REQUEST:
Up here in northeastern Illinois you'd be astounded to see that so many fisherman all like but WHITE CAPS and even WHITE VISORS !
Please consider adding WHITE VISORS to your inventory, so I can/will buy several HUGE visors !!!

I still don't understand the people that show up here thinking they aren't going to get ribbed about fly fishing trends and experience some sarcasm lol.
Another great video man, always love this style of stirring the pot.
To be serious (I tend to ruin moods that way) rings are ok, if you use very fast sinking leaders, wear you can run into problems connecting because of the coating. There I use them. Second fact - if you want to use them, do some knot tests. The thinner the wire, the higher the risk of theline getting cut by it. I used to do line and knot tests on any new lines, and things are more important, than you might think. One line gave me a 100% knot strenght with a certain knot . so I didn't use that combi.
Only used tippet rings when connecting fluoro tippet to nylon leaders. But haven’t used fluoro for a couple of years now.
I liked your last comment on Tenkara...despite what you have said I will continue using Tippet Rings....The best invention after the wheel.
I've never used a tipper ring and I catch my share of fish . I've been fly fishing since 1974 .
Tipper rings don't sound good to me .A surgeons not is all I need . Thanks for the interesting videos
And that tankara seems like foolishness ,but whatever floats your boat
However you enjoy the outdoors is your business
Michigan guy weighing in here... I've become fond of them after thinking they were sorta silly and just another $7.95 accessory that you don't need. But, here is why I like em... Oftentimes in June (especially early June) we will get big sulphur spinner falls, or hatches just prior to the twilight brown drake spinner fall. If I'm rigged up with a 9' 2x leader awaiting drakes it allows me to easily swap to a long piece of 6x in lieu of the 3-4x I'd traditonally use brown drakin'. Long story short, it is easier for me to do this than switch out my leader in the dark when there are bug drunk fish feeding on drakes.
Fishing should be fun and your videos embody that. Dig the vids when I'm able to sit down and watch 'em.
I fish real night crawlers, accentuated with rainbow power bait and steelhead smelly jelly, in your secret private water. Of course, I use a custom Loomis Asquith 4 wt. Finally, I use tippet rings at every line junction, and find that this makes the worms wiggle better when I'm poaching a few spawners. If it's off season, I like to use M80s to stun the fish before I scoop up a few dozen in a Hefty trash bag for a fish fry next door to your house.
I suppose tippet rings work well for those folks who can actually see and tie on the little buggers! Simple knots work best, quick easy, and less little stuff to drop in the water, we drop enough stuff in the water as it is!
You really got the big tippet ring industrial complex upset with these videos. I heard RIO has a hit out on you.
Yeah, and who needs more fly fishing stuff from China, anyway!
I love Tenkara fishing with my tippet ring while snowboarding, you should try it!
I use a tippet ring on my Tenkara rods. I still enjoy your videos with out being triggered. Keep making fun of people and stay HUGE!
WAIT!! You can fish with only a single dry fly?? Imma have to try this out brb
So how do you feel on loop to loop. lol 😆 awesome videos btw 🤙
This is the first time I have heard of a tippet ring. But I am from New Zealand and what do we know about fly fishing right.
tripping on trout and fly fishing NZ (a friend of this channel) use them down there religiously. I find it a little funny it appears you haven't seen many of their videos, as they talk about their rigs a lot, and you live down there with them.
@@Codyd99749 Well, I was born there and fly over there when I can. But, I have lived in Australia and Asia for the past 20 years. Tripping on Trout and Fly Fishing NZ are from the North Island, where they are used to fishing for Rainbows. I am originally from the South Island, where we use very long, light tippets for large browns, who are canny and I can't recall anyone ever using a ring in my lifetime.

Tippet rings 4 lyfe #clout
Love your hate on the tippet rings.. I use them on my 1wt for the short furled leaders, blood knots on the 3wt and heavier rods I use.
I started buying tippet rings for my wife. It made it easier for her. Her leaders were lasting longer. It got her back fishing after one of the giant tangles, that happen from time to time. After about half a season I started using them too. They make the leaders last longer. If it is going to be a dry fly, they will come off. Hate on them all you want, they do what they are supposed to. You do you Bo Boo.
Ben, Your snarky comments are what caused me to subscribe! I laugh my way through all your vids! Keep it up!
Yes, Ben is actually a drug, you see him, you hear him, you laugh, and you feel good again! Better than most Rx's! :D
Happy huge day everyone!
I just discovered you. Love your videos and attitude towards fly fishing. Just started about 6 weeks ago and I'm already discovering ways I like to fish that aren't standard. Also, tippet rings suck.
I think I'm going to try tippet rings now

snowboarding. lol. when you say the simplicity. when I started all fly reels were click pawl. that included Atlantic salmon. now you need a sealed disc drag to fish for 6" brookies.
First of all your videos are awesome. I’ve learned a ton. Thanks.
Question I own a Moonshine 5wt. I is ok. What’s you beef with them?
Keep up the good work
Most people's problem with moonshine rods is they are cheap China rods marketed as something more than what they are, a walmart quality fly rod. But if it's all you have dont be afraid to get out there and have a good time until you have the time, experience, and opportunity to upgrade your rod etc.
@@rickygiffin22 When I first got back into fly fishing, I got this really nice lamiglas rod, nice by experience thinking it was good, I bought my wife a 3w for 80 bucks, I hated the fact it was much nicer to cast. Turns out my 4w expensive rod was a 6.5 just needed the right weight line. I think to a point having a good fly line designed for whatever rod you have is way more important then the name on it. Stay huge!
I own a moonshine 5 wt and maxcatch 5 wt. My maxcatch was $95, the moonshine was $250 and shipping. The moonshine feels awful and it is MUCH harder to keep a fish hooked because of how stiff the rod gets a foot past the tiptop. It also doesn't turn dry flies over very well at all. For the maxcatch, I honestly can't tell the difference between it and my Echo 5 wt. Don't know who's making moonshine rods, but they suck.
@@kymerdeth Lines are soo important. I used crap for years, then tryed a Cortland or something - like going from stick to tooth paste in stiffness.

Well said, couldn’t agree more.
Good one Ben. Just keep simple.
The good old double surgeon knot has not failed me yet and I don't have waste more money but that just me.
I really like to euro nymph and I too think tippet rings suck! With the data I've collected, tying your own micro-loop is way more robust than a tippet ring set up. When in fails in the dead of winter good luck putting that set up back together.
tbh, i only bother with a tippet ring with Euro, which includes a bunch of crap on your line anyway, just to attach tippet to the sighter. Dry fly fishing, indicator nymphing etc, just straight through and simple.
I bought a package of them once and still use them. Lost one while fishing without a backup and made a micro loop in a pinch. It worked just the same! Will switch to the micro loop when I run out.
Most tapered leaders have a tippet section already on them. Never tried them. But if one has a tippet ring business, good luck!
Tippet rings are like golf gloves, just one more thing between your hand and the object you are trying to project (fly or golf ball). Why add a point for variation to enter into the process? I can't make a solid case for tippet rings either. Correspondingly, if your golf club grips are so shitty that you need a glove, just have your grips replaced. It is all about "feel" IMO, more is better.
Dude. This is the first time someone has echoed the exact reason I started fly fishing! Simplicity. I went rock and surf fishing a few years ago, and my love for fly fishing grew so, so much deeper. The amount of crap you have to carry, the disgusting bait...
Love this. Absolutely hilarious. Sorry you have people giving you shit for no reason.
Personally, use tippet rings down to 5x and when I need to fish ultra light tippets 6-8x, I just use micro perfection loop in my sighter material.
I don’t measure my tippet. Haha.
I love these roasts
Salty! You might be overdue for a trip to FL!
I've never used a tippet ring. If I want to be lazy and conserve tippet I'll just put loops on the leader and tippet and join them together. Doesn't get much lazier than that.
Way to keep it real!
rent free in my head !!!!! love that term
"How much tippet are people using?!!!😅😂😅😂
I've never thought of fly fishing as a "simple" way of fishing. My spinning gear setup is quite a bit simpler than my fly fishing setup (unless you start counting the gears in the spinning reel). I use tippet rings on the ends of my sinking polyleaders, which have about 3-4 inches of bare mono before you start digging into the coating.
@anon anon The way I use my spinning gear (the rare times I use it anymore) is that I get my rod out, attach a lure and go fish. With fly gear there is alot more to consider. Then again I was never that serious about conventional fishing and didn't worry about the details to the degree I do with fly fishing.
@anon anon I suppose I agree with you, however I still wouldn't call fly fishing "significantly simpler". The amount of moving parts in a spinning reel doesn't make using it more complex.
dry flies are the best way to go
Meh. I use them on my Euro Rod to preserve my hi visibility leader but if you're using them bobber fishing, I mean, indicator fishing then you're a dork. It's okay. I am a need and dork because I euro 3-4 times a week and find time to tie my own flies too. I am an oddity for sure...
I've never used tippet rings. Don't have anything against them just haven't felt the need to. I'm simple as hell getting by with simply some 6-10lb fluorocarbon leader tied to the fly line and then my fly/flies. For Bass, nothing more than 10lb Fluorocarbon and a streamer(Wooly Buggers have been my favorite so far)
Fun game. Do a shot when Ben says tippet ring.
TIPPET RINGS ARE AWESOME! Lol but really I used one today and caught some many bass on feather and game changers that a had to toss around a chubby on a 7wt to entertain myself. Lol
Don't mind me, just over here tying a tippet ring on my tenkara line wondering if it will make Ben's eye twitch a little just thinking about it... 😜
this is my set up echo carbon xl 4wt cheep reel a 4wt wf floating fly line whit an aggressive tapper about 1 fathom of 15 lb. test mono start with about 3 foot of 3x and elk hair caddis on size 8 to 14 hook replace the 3 X when cant tie on a new elk hair. Do i get lots of fish I don't care. Do I enjoy walking along rivers and streams casting my fly ya I love it
As a tenkara guy I'm honored that we're #1 on your list of people to hate on (I know you don't actually hate us but that's cool). The fact that all tenkara leaders have tippet rings at the end is probably why we're #1! Take care and keep sucking at fly fishing!
If you dont troll with your phone, even if it's just with your friends....you are missing out and I love my tippet rings....Ben is the best, keep it up buddy!!!
Because I can re-tie onto my tip ring way faster then then you can re-tie your leader....oh wait maybe not because I suck at fly fishing!!!!😉 fun and games!!! Love the channel!!
I think I made a new fly pattern, it has a similar action as a crankbait
Bro wtf snowboarding is sick! 😂😭
Brilliant!
Never used them… just bought some. Thought I’d try. Be well my man. I suck.
WOW - the TR at 0.51 is just waiting for the knot to tighten up under stress, and loose the tippet. Never cut snips that short - never !
Ben woke up and chose violence!
