    Nice build, as always. You have motivated me to do something like this with all the band saw blades that broke and are just lying around my shop. Very nice pattern, but the forged to finish look, I think, obscures the pattern you got.

    • @JPsBladeworks
      @JPsBladeworks  Місяць тому

      Its a good way to recycle those old blades. I accumulate a lot. It does obscure it a bit but close your eyes and imagine. You take a rock and you break it and there is precious gem inside and you polish it to make it pop. Thats what i had in mind. A more contrast damascus would have made it nicer but i wanted to recycle the bandsaw blades

    The thicker tip will give you more front end chopping power. While it isn't as efficient for swinging repeatedly over long periods of time, it makes it more efficient at chopping through an object in short bursts, like a kukri or similar blades.

    Nice work as always JP…. Have you ever tried or considered CA (Super Glue) for finishing your handles? Achieves the same thing as the nail polish, but is WAY stronger, and will last forever!!! I apply it in very thin layers and sand it out between layers. Take a look at Star Bond thin CA.

    • @JPsBladeworks
      @JPsBladeworks  Місяць тому

      I did nail polish to keep it from absorbing the acid and coffee so it wouldn't taint the wood color. Afterwards, i just wiped it off with acetone, but i didn't show that part. But to answer your question, i have, and it works well, especially on raw woods.

    As to full grind vs forged finish: for a kitchen knife, fishing filet knife or a folding pocket knife, I prefer full grind. For a fixed blade that is more of an outdoor chopper, I like about 75% grind/25% forge finish, unless it is a fancy Damascus pattern, then full grind.

    • @JPsBladeworks

    again good work! for drilling holes i can suggest carbide drill bits.. i often see smith struggeling with drilling holes ^^ with carbide bits i can drill even hardend steal but you need good cooling. they are a bit expensive but after you broke the 5 normal drillbit an have 2 frustrating hours try to drill a hole the expense is evend out xD

    • @JPsBladeworks

    Amazing as always!! Heads up on the "science" behind the white paint tho.... Aluminum oxide is usually the pigment for white spray paint. Also I use pink, yellow, purple, etc. They all work since its not the pigment that prevents the welding its nasty sediment it leaves as it burns preventing the bond. Try it out for a video one day you will have fun testing it :) I FAFO like way to much so I had to try it.

    I think I would have gone with the clean, leveled finish on the blade. That rough finish takes away from the smooth line and work of the Machete. The handle is American Black Cherry (ABC), as best I can tell. At least it looks like the ABC stock of lumber that I have to build my guitars.

    • @JPsBladeworks

    Why not etch the blade BEFORE you glue up the handle? Then you wouldn't have to go through the nail polish step.
    This is my favorite of all your builds. Gorgeous.

    • @JPsBladeworks

      Thanks. If i di that its a pain to get the etch on the exposed steel on the handle after i grind it down. Some makers just leave it bare steel but i like my etch to go around the whole knife. I think it is a better look.

    A very nice knife indeed! I am curious: looks like your bandsaw blades were for metal. If so, they are, most likely, bi-metal, so the teeth are made from a harder steel (most likely M42). Do you think these M42 inclusions might give you issues with annealing the billet? Thanks!

    • @JPsBladeworks
      @JPsBladeworks  Місяць тому +1

      Its possible. I never considered that. I have no clue what steel the bandsaw blades are made of.

      @@JPsBladeworks I plan on using similar blades in my very first damascus. Perhaps, I will just cut the teeth to avoid issues. 🙂 I read somewhere that the blade itself is often 15n20 but I doubt. Thank you again!

    This is a cleaver, not a knife, but it is excellent. In fact, I am not an expert in knives, but is there any project to make a sword, not a katana, but a Scimetar. It is considered the best type of blade, but I hope you do not confuse the curved sword with the Scimetar, because there is a difference between them. Many people confuse them in shape because Saber is another type.

    I have no preference on blade style, finished look and forged finish have their place. 😄
    As for having a machete withOUT a sharp point, thats fine by me; a machete is primariy used for hacking through stuff, not stabbing it 😉
    Also, while this challenge is themed, UK law prohibits what they call "zombie knives" now; your machete doesn't fall within that ban, so I'm even happier with the style.
