Animal Rescue helps man overwhelmed by 100+ beloved rabbits

- Our Animal Rescue Team responders entered the home of a man in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Not only was this man struggling with health problems, but he also had just admitted that he needed help for his rabbits-there were over a hundred of them.
Thirty years ago, Mike had taken in his first rabbit at a time in his life when he was struggling with alcoholism. He said that it was that sense of responsibility for an animal that had helped to keep him sober: “They mean the world to me.” Ever since then, he has shared his life and home with rabbits.
But things have become difficult. Mike has grown older and is struggling with his health. These changes have made it impossible for him to give them the care he knows they deserve. Unable to bring the rabbits to get spayed or neutered, the population of rabbits in his home grew out of control. As hard as it was, he recognized he needed support, so he contacted the McKamey Animal Center, which then requested our assistance. He credits rabbits for saving his life-in return, by asking for help, he may very well have saved theirs.
When Mike welcomed our team into his home this week, they discovered extremely unsanitary conditions. The rabbits were suffering from flea infestations, hair loss and injuries typical of overcrowding. Multiple nursing litters and rabbits of various ages were found burrowing in furniture throughout the residence. Veterinarians noted several rabbits may be pregnant.
Despite his embarrassment about the damaged state of his home, Mike was immensely grateful for help. As emotional as it was to say goodbye to his rabbits, he expressed excitement that the animals would have a chance to be rehomed with families who could love them as he has, while also properly providing for them.
There are times in all our lives when we find ourselves in need of help-sometimes this happens suddenly, as when disasters strike, and in those cases our rescue team stands ready to assist animals and their families in the aftermath. Other times, need arises slowly and in complex ways. Recognizing our interdependence on one another is essential for creating the humane world we envision.
This is why our approach is multifaceted, as well, preventing crises where we can before they happen. Through our access to care initiatives, we provide pet supplies and veterinary services at no cost to underserved communities around the country-because the wellbeing of animals is essentially tied to the wellbeing of people.
As our rescue team gently carried the rabbits out of the home and transported them to a temporary emergency shelter, where veterinarians are conducting in-depth exams, there was a sense of hope and new beginnings. When they are healthy enough, we will begin to arrange placement with shelter and rescue partners so that the rabbits can find adoptive homes. Mike said that he’s focused on “what’s best for these guys,” and new loving homes for them is all he wants. “These guys leaving-it’s the best for everybody.”

What a story! Congratulations on 19 yrs sober ! God had a hand in this , one day at a time... Thanks for caring for the rabbits! I can't take rabbits , I am in Virginia, 67 and have a small 1bedroom senior apartment. I rescued a cat from the humane society, Joey is 8 yrs old and he is a handful! I can donate for the rabbits when I am paid monday. I donate monthly to the humane Society. Prayers for continued sobriety , one day at a time❤️🙏🥰🎃🫶🐰🐇🐇🐇
What a heartbreaking situation for both this kind gentleman and his precious rabbits. I'm so glad you were able to help them all.
Please people, do not judge this man, he´s no usual animal hoarder, he took the couraged step to ask for help and got it, hopefully for himself too.

This is truly a sad and great story on both sides. He thought of the little guys and wanted to help them. I hope he gets all the help he can. He truly is a wonderful person putting them all in safe hands. "Of course - Of course" your organization is always wonderful. What we and the gentleman do without you!
You do realize they are all most likely from a couple of rabbits that he CHOSE NOT TO GET NEUTERED! If he wanted to help them he would never have let this happen! This is years of neglect!

Oh God many prayers to you dear sir, I know how hard it is to quit; my husband refuses to stop drinking and find joy in anything else. I finally have to walk away from a 26 year long relationship because he just won’t quit to save his own life and I gave up 26 years of mine. I found hope in caring for animals as a child I understand how caring for them can change a humans life ❤❤❤❤ I’m sending prayers for you to be healed 🙏🏻

I am sorry but this is the most disgusting way to have rabbits! Why didn’t someone do something sooner! The smell from their urine would have traveled outside the walls of that house. This is horrendous for any animal to live like this. He didn’t want to cage them but instead he imprisoned them in filth! I am sure many died from stasis and just living in this condition. Apparently none were neutered which is even worse. He is a sick human being and I have no empathy for someone doing this to animals. People like this do not deserve to have animals. God I thought it was bad having to deal with people not cleaning their cats litter boxes and taking the cats away. The poor cats kept going to the bathroom around the litter box but it was so full they couldn’t use it anymore. These were young adults who were not sick just plain lazy! I wonder how many years these rabbits lived like this with pain, no teeth check up and more than likely having arthritis! This guy was not kind but selfish!
