  • If you are looking for an easy, effective way to increase the amount of forage and cover on your property, this is it. Research shows that removing 30% of the canopy in your timbered acres can increase the amount of forage for deer by up to 500%! This can be a great compliment to an already existing food plot strategy, and is something that only takes a chainsaw and a weekend to implement!

I struggle with tree ID. What resources do you recommend I use to see what my natural habitat is and make sure I am cutting down the undesired trees?

Amazing, even if the numbers are even half that. Great content.

We cleared 35%. The sun hit the floor and now it’s thorn thistle and multi floral. Eastern red cedars are coming up like crazy.

      Controlled burns will fix that

That’s what a good early fall fire is for

It's not uncommon to see non native species come on after opening the canopy. But as these guys mentioned, fire will set those back and give the native seed bank a chance to grow. You may have to follow up with herbicide after fire depending on the species and response.

@@Whitetail_Propertiesany alternatives to prescribed fire? Herbicides and leaf blowers? Lol would love to do this in several areas but don’t have to resources or money to hire someone. Not even sure I’m allowed to do it honestly being on a mountain in VA guess I’d need to check with the forest service and local regulations first

Adam, so I know elm and honey locust are undesirable tree species. What other tree species would you say are undesirable from a wildlife point of view?

The idea is to reduce the canopy and bring the foliage back down to deer and turkey level, not extinct the non oak hickory species. Many cut trees will stump sprout regenerating shrub type food and cover. Girdling and hack and squirting trees will kill and reduce overstocked numbers allowing in light and releasing the valuable trees they are competing with. The idea is to control the plant species types and their population as well as controlling the height of those non timber trees that deer eat. Once sunlight hits the floor it will explode with growth releasing the native seed bank. An occasional fire will control the height and species. A follow up with herbicide will most likely be necessary to finish off the invasives that the fire knocks back. Once a landscape is taken over by mesophytic species it will need disturbance and manipulation to convert it back to pyrophytic dominated species, at least in this lifetime. Don't forget fire formed the landscape and man has removed much of that.
