Great vid. Don't get frustrated on your first try at this. Take your time and it will work. First time I did this myself it took forever to get it right . The more times I did it it became alot easier to know what adjustments to make when it wasn't right.
Thanks, Steve! Great advice. When you understand how it works you'll know when it's actually time for a new cable or even a new derailleur and not just your inability to get it dialed 😀
Always one of the first things to check is the rear derailleur hanger, so you need a rear derailleur alignment tool. also worth checking tru axle, pivot bolts. if whole rear end is floppy, moving all over the place I guess shifting might also get messed up. also inspect the cassette, check if teeth are bent or have sharp edges, check each cog/sprocket, check if cogs have play, if you just installed the cassette it might be issues caused by misaligment of the cogs, cus of wear in the freehub body caused by the cogs chewing it, if so they might not align properly each time you install it, resulting in them coming loose or or misaligment and bad shifting, if so you need to file all of the splines, make sure to file the whole spline, and make sure not to file the area between the splines. doing this regularly assures the cassette won't get stuck.
I wish I knew this earlier not long ago was having a really bad day on the trails at first on a few techie areas which never caused me any issues and then later my bike was shifting really poorly not getting into the gear I desired and had to stop a few times because of it. When I finished my ride I noticed my back wheel was really odd in I noticed movement from side to side. I then finally figured my wheel wheel was really loose needed about 3 full turns to get it back on tightly. The next ride no problems whatso ever.
Great video! 👍🏽 I’m definitely having a hard time adjusting my derailleur. My bike is new but when I shift to the 5th hardest gear the chain doesn’t land correctly in the cog which makes a clicking sound when pedaling. I adjusted the tension but it messes the shifting from the second to easiest gear. I can’t figure what I’m doing wrong 😕
The “b” tension adjustment makes a bigger difference in the bigger (easier) gears. First, make sure the chain gap isn’t too big or too small. Set your high and low limit screws with the chain off to be sure the aren’t restricting the shift at the top or bottom of the cassette. From the hardest gear, check indexing 3-4 gears easier with the barrel adjuster fully in (cw) adding just enough ccw cliches to get it to shift. If you can’t get it to smoothly index across the cassette you may have a bent hanger or even a bent derailleur Cage. Please let me know if you can fix this😁
@@TrailBreaker thanks for the kind reply. I tried adjusting the b tension with no luck. I did more research on this and found this is a common problem for GX cassettes. One of the teeth from the 4th cog is making contact with the outer link causing this clicking sound. Might need to grind off a bit. Wish me luck 😀
I like that idea of ballparking the limits before putting the chain on. Never done it that way but I will next time.
Yeah, you’ll only need to do this with a new setup but I think it makes the indexing process easier 👊🤙
Best easiest how to on u tube
Thanks. I’ll be working on my bike later today. Anxiety gone.

Good advise as always!
@@TrailBreaker Another thing, I recommend to apply Loctite 243 on the adjustment bolts to keep them secure for longer.
Great vid, thanks for that! Having trouble with a new SRAM GX derailleur not indexing correctly so that should come in useful!
Good luck!👍👊
Always great to see you and watch your new vid.
Thanks, Buddy! I appreciate the support 👊👍
Thanks... very helpful! & subscribed
Thanks! Welcome aboard 👊

Same here! I thought I'd add those few fixes up front since I've had them all and chased my tail for a while trying to figure it out😀
Hi nice one bro, if you don’t mind. no need for a rider together with his gear to ride the bike while adjusting the b gap? Thanks in advance
Biggest pet hate. Once sorted though makes any ride far more enjoyable 👍
For sure!
How's your bike shifting right now? Did you adjust it or was it done by your LBS?
