- Here's a recording of Jaco Pastorius playing "Havona" with his WOM band during a gig at the Beverly Hills Theatre on November the 20th in 1983. It's an audience recording, but you can still hear what's going on rather well. Jaco doesn't take a solo on the changes, but he does solo briefly on the outro. Unfortunately the audio has a few glitches that were caused by me accidentally leaving the cd-r copy (that I received in a trade back in the summer of 2006) out in the sun on a hot afternoon, sadly before I had ripped the cd and saved the files to a hard drive. My apologies for that. Hopefully you won't find that it distracts too much from what is a very energetic performance and a rare chance to hear Jaco playing this live. Full band lineup: Jaco Pastorius - bass, Alex Foster - soprano saxophone, Kenwood Dennard - drums, Don Alias - percussion, Melton Mustafa - trumpet, Mike Stern - guitar.
This is amazing! How do you get these recordings?
Hi my fellow Jaco fan. Glad you enjoyed it. Someone else asked me this same question on another video, so I'll just re post the response I wrote there: I've acquired these recordings through 20 years of involvement in various trading communities. Some people on various jazz forums were of great help and gave me my first recordings to get me started. The snowball has kept on rolling ever since, and I now have about 150 contacts from all over the world that I have traded recordings with.
Hope this answers your question :)
@@musicuniverse1986 wow! Thanks for answering! That’s crazy!

Thank You Soooooo Much.
If only there were live footage of this...
Great version of Havona, IMHO it's the greatest track on Heavy Weather album.
Good to hear that you enjoyed it, Anssi. And I agree with what you said. I also find it to be the best track on Heavy Weather and the perfect way to close an album that was a real tour de force of Jazz/Fusion. Thanks for commenting.

Haha! :) Cool coincidence! You're welcome. My next couple of uploads will be non Jaco material, but after that I will continue with trying to spread the Jaco message. Thanks for commenting my friend. Greetings from your nordic neighbor.

I think this is the first live performance of Havona I hear. I’ve never found any
Hi Elias. I did post another live version of Jaco playing "Havona" a few months ago. I see you are a subscriber of my channel, so I'm surprised you missed it. Here's the link: ua-cam.com/video/NBPTGcJHD5s/v-deo.html
@@musicuniverse1986 ah yes! I forgot about it haha. In which case, this video is the second live performance of Havona I hear 🤣
That run @ 2:10 is majestic.
I already know how bad Jaco is but Alex Foster on that dam Soprano sax whew!
Yes, Alex is an underrated player for sure and one of the best saxophonists Jaco ever recorded with in my opinion. And not only was he a part of several of Jaco's bands for a number of years but he was also one of Jaco's best friends during that time and a confidante. He's had a great career, and not just because of his association with Jaco. I wish there were more recordings of him available.
@@musicuniverse1986 I’m just blessed i met and had a chance to spend some time with Jaco but I think this is my first time checking out Alex Foster I kinda knew Jaco was gonna squeeze in a solo at the end lol!
