Jaco Pastorius Band feat. Kazumi Watanabe - Havona( live in Japan 1983)

- I uploaded this back on youtube today. It's a live version of "Havona" from the officially released double live album "Jaco Pastorius Word Of Mouth Band 1983 Tour feat Kazumi Watanabe". This is the only live version I've heard where Jaco takes a solo. While it may not be a masterpiece like his premeditated solo on the "Heavy Weather" album is and can sound a bit frenetic at times, he goes for it and gets in several beautiful phrases. As for his supportive lines on the rest of the track, they are killer and so is the rest of the band. Full band lineup: Jaco Pastorius - bass, Ron Tooley - trumpet, Alex Foster - saxophone, Delmar Brown - keyboards, Don Alias - percussion, Othello Molineaux -
steel drums, Kenwood Dennard - drums and Kazumi Watanabe - guitar
Hi. To all of you who enjoyed this recording I just wanted to inform you that I just posted another tune from this album, a killer rendition of "Dania" with a smoking bass solo from Jaco. Here's the link:

Havona is one of the best songs ever written by anyone. It is utterly fabulous!
Hi Lucille. I totally agree. It's one for the ages. People will be listening to Havona for as long as there are people on this planet. Of that I'm sure. Thanks for commenting :)
i like 75 percent of ALL weather report songs - with or without jaco. but the ones jaco plays on are truly special.
@@pusanghalaw I completely agree. Jaco just brought some ingredients to those songs that often elevated them from great to masterpieces. I can't imagine what those albums would have been like without him. Thanks for commenting.
Truth a masterpiece
For me, Havona is hands down the best Jazz composition ever...
I never seen nobody so flawless and unpredictable in their playing then Jaco very emotional in his choices of notes!
I agree. Jaco always had surprises in store. Thanks for commenting.
I like Havona the best in heavy weather. Thrilling development, spacious drifts among instruments, ending in chaotic but beautiful ending! I wish I could have seen it played live!
how it s possible to sound like this with only four strings in a big band on fire it s really incredible music iut of this world... jaco was a genius and his music is in my heart forever !!!!!! thanks very very much for your up

だれかNYで助けていただけなかったのでしょうか?
Beautiful intro but at this time his maniac illness was interfering his brilliance by the way I love him for ever❤️ still my favorite bass player
Hi. I agree that this is not his best performance. As you said his mania had set in by this point, and I suspect he was also under the influence. I still feel however that there are moments of brilliance from Jaco on this recording, thus making it worth posting. Also, the band he used on this tour is top notch. Thanks for commenting.
It might not be his best performance but it's still excellent. He had the best musicians on stage with him. You can hear that he loses it a bit in the bass solo, but he still has the basic drive. For someone who was quite ill at the time this is astounding. I'm so grateful to have not long discovered his WoM band. Thank you for posting these great recordings.🙏
This is what jazz is.
The best version of this song was recorded at the Beverly Hills Theater in 1983. It used to be on the internet a couple of decades ago. I wish someone could find it.
I have the recording. I'll upload it at some point since you have expressed your interest in it. Thanks for commenting.

Such a classic tune. Love the lines Jaco opens with on this version.
Classic tune indeed. Yes, he plays some nice counterpoint lines in the beginning. Thanks for commenting.

Is there any footage of this performance anywhere ???
FUCKING ROOOOOOCKING!
His solo is nowhere close to the original track in terms of the progression of notes and the 'story telling ' .. but nevertheless, this is still insanely good. Greatest of all tracks ever written!!!
Imagine showing this to aliens
ummmmmffff
fretted bass
