I’m with Weird Al for keeping his physical media, considering tech companies can simply block you from listening or watching streaming media you paid for (an actual thing that can happen) I’m all for owning something like that that can be played forever

I would have scanned (or had someone scan) all of Weird Al's fan mail so it doesn't take up physical space but you still have a record of it and respect the fan, haha. So ephemeral.

As someone who has hired organizers, read books, blah blah blah here's what helped me:
"I don't know where to start." Start with TRASH. It helps to take the overwhelm out of looking at a pile.
Then look for the "easy" stuff: "Why is this here? It goes in such-n-such room." TAKE IT THERE NOW. This one thing goes against conventional organizing advice, but it seriously changed my life. Then if you get interrupted or have to stop, you don't turn around to more of a mess with a "Keep" pile to deal with later. There is no later.
"I don't want/need this anymore." Have a donatable DONATE box.
Those are the first few steps from Dana K. White at A Slob Comes Clean. Her method is especially ADHD-friendly and helpful for people dealing with time or energy or mobility issues. She has a podcast, YT channel, and books on her "no mess" method. She interviews a hoarding specialist on her podcast who uses her method. (I'm not affiliated in anyway, just a huge fan of her work!) Hope that's helpful for someone else. 🙂

Cds are not hoarding. The way artists are ruining their own online legacy by replacing their original mix albums with increasingly safe yet obnoxious remixes and remasters, all of us music lovers are going to end scouring the internet for used CDs or lovingly pirated copirs of the originals.
Just go and listen to the album versions a band like Pearl Jam has of their first five albums. It sounds horrible. Don't throw away your CDs!!!
Or your stereo setup for that matter, but it seems everyone got stupid at the start of the 2000s

My grandma came from a 3rd world country where they saved and repurposed everything. It took us a year and a half to clean out her house after she died. Sometimes I'm afraid I've developed some tendencies living with her. Maybe it's just depression. But sometimes the dishes and laundry are the hardest things to do because I've let them pile so high

This is soooo cathartic and the timing... Un-fkng-CANNY!! I'm not religious whatsoever, but if I was, I'd surely venture to say this video ending up on my feed as being divine intervention!! ...Or interference, In any case, thank you so very much for sharing this video. Hoarding's rarely about greed, but moreso it's a trauma response to the end of a long term, abusive relationship.
If we don't have room to fit someone else into our home, then it saves us from finding ourselves in another abusive relationship. It's a subconscious form of self preservation, in the same way that some sexual assault victims will gain huge amounts of excess weight, to make themselves unattractive in hopes of avoiding any future attempted assaults. It's unhealthy, either way, and the term self preservation is misleading, as far as I believe, as in either case, both coping mechanisms will shorten that person's life, rather than preserve it!

My mom hoarded a lot of thrift store crap later in life. She used to shrug it off and tell me to just have Goodwill pick it up after she died. Well, she died at the height of the pandemic when Goodwill wouldn't come out. I got the family to come take what they wanted and then paid some guys to haul away the rest. I understand she couldn't really help herself but part of me still resents the layers of family stuff I had to sift through and feel bad about.

My rationale for keeping CDs (and DVDs for that matter) is that there's no guarantee that digital media will always be accessible. But as long as you can find a CD or DVD player, you can still listen to your CDs... Or you can use your computer to rip the MP3s off the CD and burn to a new CD if the original one is getting too old.

My cousin is a hoarder, he had food trash and all other sorts of crap building up in his old apartment. There was a walking path to get through everything, he’s got a 12 year old, she was about 10 at the time we discovered his hoarding he wouldn’t ask for help. His ex wife knew, but didn’t do anything and my family was furious. The breaking point was when his leg needed to be amputated because of his diabetes, he had to move to a house he was letting my aunt stay in. She passed just as this all happened, the house was my grandmothers and he won’t let anyone visit because we all gave him an ultimatum that if he ruined that house we’d be calling a few different people on him, all grew up in that house. One of his cats “disappeared” only to be found dead under his bed. He almost died from eating chicken wings that he left out for almost a month. Runs in the family our grandpa was a hoarder… sad to see

My problem is what Neal talked about. I hate the idea of adding to the landfill. Im ok with throwing things away emotionally, but stuff I don’t know what to do with is the bane of my existence. I’m ok with things that can be recycled. But a lot of stuff is in ok enough condition but, with no car, the idea of donating seems like such a huge ordeal. Years ago I had a company who takes used computers and they picked some up, but stuff like cd’s etc are harder to know what to do with. I have a one bedroom with no storage. I relate to the story about finding a business card from 10 years ago beside my kitchen sink. Stuff just disappears and reappears in my tiny apartment. I think it’s haunted! 🤣

    • @JP-ve7or
      @JP-ve7or Місяць тому

It's hard to deal with, but if you think about it, most things are destined for the landfill. You can put it off a few years--maybe--by donating, reselling, trading, etc., but ultimately, it's destined for trash the day it's manufactured. And the thing I've learned about hoarding is, if you're not willing to put it in a landfill, your living space becomes the landfill. 🫤

The self awareness of these men is really something. Ya love to see it
For ADHD, the trick is start with a small victory, put the dopamine kettle on, or work within a set boundary- until you can get that thing whistling.. As in, with the desk example, _just_ organize your pencil cup. Straighten one stack of papers. _Just_ empty the trash bin. Do one tiny task that will be immediately apparent to you. Clean off the top left corner of your coffee table, or line up the remotes on the right. Put _just_ your makeup brushes away. Find an empty container and put your charging cables in it. Replace your pet's waterbowl. Don't take the shower yet, just get your underwear, clothes and towel and out them in the bathroom.
Don’t do _all_ of the dishes, just get them out of the sink and into manageable piles on the counter:
-put on a 20 minute NB UA-cam video like this one.
-Put on gloves for these tasks bc adhd is typically very sensitive to sensory input. The gloves must fit! Get cleaning gloves that fit you really well.
-Drag the trash bin over, take the lid off so you can access it.
-Get a sturdy, dirty glass out of the sink and rinse it out and start putting forks and spoons in it.
-Then start putting like with like, stack plates and bowls to the left of the sink, dumping debris in the trash as you go, (rinsing can be simultaneously or as a separate step if it is something you hate)
-just keep getting the dishes out of the sink and matching them until the video is over, and then stop.
-Put on a 15 minute video while you take a break.
find another 20 minute video, play it, and go back to your dishes or start a new project.
These are all in *blocks* if you will, so you’re looking to set up the task, not “do” the task.
New blocks of larger tasks are
-gathering your laundry (can be divided into room by room, bedroom is one chunk, bathroom/living room another)
-or sorting it into 2 or 3 piles, grouping by color and fabric texture.
-taking a trash bag with you and entering into each room looking around saying out loud, “trash… trash… trash…” ( _don’t laugh at me just SAY IT_ ) and while you do this you’re finding JUST trash and putting it in your bag. Do this until your 20 minute video ends. Take a ten minute break. Do another block/chunk/task
What should be happening here for ADHD people is you should begin to feel more and more motivation growing as you go, the more so for any quick, visible tasks you can accomplish in one block and you can see the results from wherever you’ve taken your break at.
I’m writing a book about Decluttering, organizing, unf*cking your life as an adult with ADHD and too much figurative and literal garbage in your life and not enough dopamine to throw it out. I have ADHD though so, who knows -if- when I’ll finish it
