Nice review 👍 I’ve been considering one of these for a while now. The only thing thats making me hesitate is that i’m a bit OCD about cables dangling down my dashboard to the AUX and power outlets 😬
Just use a tablet. You can do the same things and you can charge it and not have any cables anywhere . I have been using one in my car for almost 10 years. They so the exact same thing all you have to do is load the apps. I use a $30 tablet and it works great!
Great video. Product isn't for me personally but still benefitted from your video as didn't know the ground loops existed!!!!! I connect my music from a Bluetooth dongle plugged into the cars 3.5mm aux jack and pulse's at high volume. Always been annoying so just bought the ground loop. Thanks again.
Bought something similar 6 years ago on Aliexpress still running great. Keep in mind that your country (depending were you live) can charge import costs when they catch it at customs. For me it was an extra 80 euro (the Netherlands) but it was def. still worth it.
Mine doesn’t connect straight away Bluetooth does but my mobile data WiFi seems to be temperamental do you need the mobile data to connect to the car wifi?
For the ground loup with that filter you could potentially change the audio quality with it. Have a couple of different ones here which freq curve is not flat at all. Potentially you could use a dc/dc isolated convertor. They have them in all kind of flavours. (in/out voltage and max current) Same happens with cheap bluetooth audio modules connected to a power supply vs a battery. You will hear all kind of beeps and other stuff on a power supply which these isolated dc/dc convertors are a fantastic solution for. I made an internet radio with a ESP32 and a DA converter that is powered by a radio with a USB stick 'input' and an aux-in. Without the isolated dc/dc I would hear stuff when the volume was set to normal playing volume. Now at maximum volume it is dead silent between the pauzes. On another store known I bought a wifi android auto box for like 18 euro shipped. My VW only has hard wired Android Auto. For that price it is absolutely crazy that it works perfect. Boots up in a couple of seconds and has been rock stable. Glad to see you are doing ok!
Thanks for your suggestions. Yes, I agree that it's probably better isolating the power supply instead of trying to mask the noise. However, I'm not sure how good the DAC is in this unit (probably not very) anyway. I'm probably best sticking to CD if I want the best quality from my car. But, if someone has a high end system, I think it's certainly worth going with your suggestion.
Nice vid but i have a question, my car radio is Bluetooth and if i want to hear music from the radio and in the same time i want to use maps via the screen i must use Bluetooth for the screen;(if u don't understand what im saying i want to know if the screen has a maps app without connecting with the phone)
Looks great for the price. I also use Evermusic but get frustrated the track order is always out on CarPlay. Also reminds me of a device I used to use on my VAG cars, a Phatnoise Phatbox - it contained a hard drive and let you play music via the CD changer port.
For audio, yes. You'll need power though. There's a video on the Apple Carplay playlist on my channel that has a was of sending the audio to your car's bluetooth whilst still using CarPlay.
Mate, thanks for your brilliant review. Could you please advise have you tried to play video from UA-cam through carplay? Does it play videos properly?
Hi . Does iPhone connect automatically to the CarPlay and how long does take to connect please? Also can I connect that screen and play on Bluetooth speaker
Does it only have that "general" audio control, or does it also let you separately set volumes for Siri, calls, music and navigation? CarPlay generally "locks" the volume on the phone and delegates those volumes to the receiver, but some of these cheap ones just don't support it and you end up with loud music and soft calls.
Hey, I know this is an old video but I am having the hardest time with mine. Mine connects via car plug on through a cigarette lighter. I can get my music to play through the actual unit itself but I can’t get it to play through my car speakers (which is what I want). How can I get it to connect to my car speakers?
I installed it, navigation is cool (use Sygic), but I have trouble with sound - I want to BT connect it with car stereo, put same radio frequency on car radio with carplay, and in start it connects, but during ride (perhaps from signal variation through city) it disconnects, then I hear, for example Spotify from carplay, and really loud radio from car stereo, pretty annoying. Can I do something about it (reinstall drivers or something) or I must connect carplay with wires? Does my BT connection between phone and car stereo interrupt something with new connection with carplay? Thanks
Thank you for the review, I've been thinking about getting that. Our VW van's multimedia is malfunctioning and unfortunately no more warranty. VW said it will cost AU$3900 to replace and the carplay screen is a very good option. Cheers
how old is your van? The VW RCD330 and its variants are fairly cheap and OEM, just do a bit of research as there are some not so good clones out there. I put one in my 2010 Seat Leon a few years back and it's been great.
Apparently these units don't last too long in the Aussie heat - think of the heat in the vehicle in the summer. In my VW van in summer, if I leave my phone on the dash it overheats and shuts down, this won't be any different!
So Im supposed to connect AUX from the small device into the head unit? (display) and the bigger wire from the small device into the back of my radio? Is it right? If not I would appreciate a little help. thanks
I have just bought a similar device. Looks identical but different brand. There are two inputs on RHS, a usb (which connects to 12v input cigarette lighter) and 3.5 mm audio output which feeds into your aux input. You can omit the aux, and transmit output on a free FM frequency, then use your car radio to receive. I couldn't use that option as in London UK I couldn't find a free, and clear, frequency, with all the pirate stations and other noise.
Hey I realize this video is from a while back but I have searched for a answer and nothing has worked. I have a Temu CarPlay dash mounted device, I can hear the caller on a incoming call but they can’t hear me , also when I ask Siri to send a text message she asked what do I want to say, when I give my message she doesn’t respond and no message is sent. I don’t know what else to check on device as I’ve already checked volume and don’t know what settings on my phone could cause this if any. Hoping that you could offer suggestions. I have the CarPlay device connected to the aux on my existing stereo. I can hear the caller through my car speakers as well as music and if I use the maps. I got the messaging part worked out finally. This one thing still persists though. I can call on Siri to make a phone call and she does ( she’ll say calling Ben , for instance) then I can hear the caller just fine on speakers but they can’t hear me at all. How can you install it that can be low enough to don't block your vision on lower part of windshield? My focus mk3 has middle section of dashboard that goes upright :/
Yeah the mk3 focus has a higher dashboard. It’s okay on my V70 as it is lower than the bottom of the windscreen. May I suggest a 7 inch screen that is mounted to a tablet CD holder. This goes into you CD drive and can hold a screen. If I recall, the mk3 focus has a CD drive right below the top of the dash with air vents either side. I think it would work well on that.
hi there mate, cool video. Did anyone here using it had issues with resetting to factory, losing the settings? every now and then gets back to like very weird looking screen (high brightness and contrast). cheers
I have the exact same unit wired using the 3.5 with NO interference…it could be where you have routed the 3.5 cable…it could be near other wiring that causes the interference.
I think you could be right. Do you have a V70 or a different car ? My 3.5mm input box is aftermarket too, so maybe manufacturers inputs would have better protection against interference.
