Why I like the Remington 870 DM

  • Remington breathed new life into their classic 870 12ga shotgun when they introduced the 870 DM with a detachable magazine. It's not perfect, and it has some strong competition, but this mag-fed shotgun is really good, and worth a look.

    I was a police armorer for over a decade. I can personally state that I have seen first hand how the buckshot shells would swell up in the tube magazine to the point that the shells would not chamber when they were needed. The ammo needed frequent rotation to ensure proper functioning. If all brass buckshot military loads were still available, then they might be the thing. I see this type of shotgun as the answer for those who want to keep a loaded shotgun at home for long periods of time without having to change the ammo every six months or so. Our department used Winchester and at times Federal ammo, with the same problems. When I was an armorer, we never used Remington or other brands because it cost us more and we were on a tight budget. Great video. I have felt that the Mossberg, while a great gun, had too big of a magazines for ease in use. You can't beat a tube magazine shotgun for maneuverability, and if you are going to use a detachable mag shotgun, don't get one with a mag that sticks out forever, or weighs too much. My two cents worth. Have a great day.

    I've noticed the price on these go down in recent weeks in a bunch of sites, and there's a $50 rebate being offered by Remington as of now (9/27/2019). But I'll still pass. Why? Those proprietary Remington 6rd magazines are currently about $40 a piece, and you can't find them in stock on most places. PLUS, there are already other Chinese 870 clone mag-fed shotguns that take Saiga mags and drums, and Turkish mag-fed shotguns that take MKA-1919 mags and drums - priced lower than all but the LOWEST END of the 870 DM models.

      Ghost Dog If you leave rounds loaded in a tube magazine long enough, they will deform as well. I have seen it as a police armorer. The detachable magazine might not deform the rounds as fast, I wouldn't know from first hand experience. The only magazine fed shotgun I have owned is a Marlin 512, and that holds just won in the magazine, with relatively little spring pressure. It has not been left loaded for long. Have a great day.

    • @johndilday1846
      @johndilday1846 Рік тому

      @@nelsonr1467 It varied. Some shells would start to compress within a short period of time, others not so much. To be on the safe side, we rotated out the ammunition every six months and that generally took care of the problem. I remember that some shells went bad in as little as 4 to 5 months. We had officers make it a practice to check the loads in the guns while they were inspecting their squad cars and replace any shells that were starting to compress. I can’t remember if one brand was worse than others, but do recall that our department favored Winchester/Western high brass 00 Buck. Those loads worked very well on dispatching injured deer from vehicle collisions quickly and humanely. As I recall, any loads that were aging were simply relegated to range/training use. Hope this helps.

    When it first came out, and was priced at around $400-$600 (based on features and accessories), I passed on it. It only comes with ONE proprietary 6rd magazine. Literally NO other magazines on the market are compatible. I bought both a Turkish made Mag-fed pump, and the Chinese made 870 clone, the Civet-12, because both came with 3 10-rd after-market magazines - and both cost around $250.00. Well, to all our surprise, Remington has cut the prices on these, and you can get one now for $239.99 or LESS, and Remington is offering a $50 rebate right now. Even with the proprietary magazines, I am now inclined to pick one up.

    Good video I personally disagree for myself, I'm not saying one is better than the other for everyone..to each their own.
    The way I see it for myself... Yes it's easy reloads but it also means carrying around these big bulky mags and having to have the mag hanging off the bottom which is kind of hindrance especially if you're used to the sleek profile of a traditional tube fed. Also regardless your platform you should train with it so the way I see it work on your dexterity and get quick at loading shells heck with some practice you can load two at a time or even double that and pretty quickly, per hand. Also unless you're going to have a short barrel you're not really any further ahead in terms of round count if you compare to a traditional tube fed especially if it has an extended tube and with no extra bulk hanging off the gun.
    Another thing to consider is what tlbs talked about which was round deformation especially under storage
    All in all cool concept I'm all for new designs and testing them out and finding what's best for you, just not my personal choice I'll grab for a short barreled tube fed or something along the lines of a 590a1 if I'm looking for more capacity
    Good video thanks for your take and all the work you put into your channel
