Wheat starch cooked at 5-7 parts water to 1part wheat starch, until translucent, let cool, if too thick add a couple tsp water and blend with immersion blender until smooth. Add a couple drops clove oil as a preservative. This is what’s used in archival bookbinding. If too thin, start over and reduce water. Lasts a week or so and is dirt cheap.

Love this.....I have a huge roll of freezer paper that I used for sewing patterns cuz it irons on cloth.
Shannon, I've made over a dozen napkin skins since watching your video. I had to go out and buy some napkins (went to Tuesday Morning for the very first time) before I could start. I think I missed it when you said to use a very thin layer of the YES glue. First time I used way to much and the napkin felt like elephant skin - very thick. I've been using a lot less and they're great! Thanks!

aluminum foil can be embossed once attached to cardstock too.
I run foil thru my embosser before it's attached to card stock too!

I love this idea for using in scrapbook with wedding napkins rather than putting in the bumpy napkin that I always save from the wedding. Crispy, LOL! You crack me up girl!

Thanks for sharing this cool technique! Regarding the wax paper - I'm wondering if the type/brand of wax paper makes a difference? There's wax paper that has that waxy coating on the surface, and the other, cheaper kind that has less wax and feels kinda like deli paper. Maybe you and the other lady had different types of wax paper?

For Texans the HEB freezer paper is amazing thick stuff. It is under $5 for a gigantic roll that is also wide. Red box usually on the bottom shelf.

I liked this technique - have about half a jar of YES! Paste that has survived moving and storage. Have a whole gallon Ziploc of napkins. I intend to try it backed on the foil and then using the foiled one in an embossing folder. Should hold the texture nicely. This part of TX doesn't have an HEB to get nice freezer paper - boo on Amarillo
I have a question. When these are being stored, because they are made with glue, will they stick together?
Lol. I was in bed cracking up when you were trying the nori on the dely wrap. Crispy. And it tears unlike this one with the yes paste that... Also tears. My husband was sleeping. Omg. I keep laughing. Thanks for sharing

Hi Shannon. I tried this process using matte medium and mod podge (matte) on parchment paper, dried with my heat tool and had them off in less than 5 min. Worked like a charm! Thznks for the tip, but I am dying to find out the problem you had with them so I will know if I can use this or not! Thanks sgain for a great channel and videos!
Ellen Coffin There are lots of different ways to make a decal, in fact I have a video on some gel medium decals I made a while back. None of them give you the same transparency as YES! Paste. Close...but not quite!

Hi Shannon - playing catch up since I subscribed - My Yes paste arrived (in the UK) after ordering yesterday! I had a "bad glue day" yesterday, and nothing worked in my composition book - glue stick, PVA and others....Yes is perfect as it's so thick - Followed on with the transfer thing, so now trying that. I have waxed discs for both making burgers and putting on the top of home made jam - I'm thinking, especially with the smaller jam discs, that I could make some "circle spots" this way - they are a perfect size too! Thanks for sharing, Helen

Hey Shannon, great follow up! The Nori paste napkin would be good for your original quest of finding focal images since it's not so transparent, as would the foil backed napkin.

Hi Shannon, just discovered your channel and have started watching all your videos. I saw the video you made when you had salvaged some vinyl cling wrap stuff out of the goodwill box. I am thinking you could stick one of these napkins to one side leaving the other side to stick to a window 👍🏻😀👍🏻 tadah homemade window clings 👍🏻
I accidentally found that glossy acrylic medium by golden works great on parchment paper to do the same thing. It works on both napkins and tissue paper. I spent a ton of time working on a project and then the stuff just peeled up when it was dry.

Shannon Green oh fudge, and I just read you can not stack them....I was hoping that I could. As you know Mod Podge will not stack as they stick to each other in warm weather. DARN! lol
Daddy Van's beeswax furniture polish will fix that Mod Podge sticking problem on finished journal pages! But I wouldn't recommend using it on pieces that you will glue down later.

do the transfers stick to each other when you store them or do you put something between them? and how do you store them?
I store them in sheet protectors. Most of mine are covered with Daddy Van's (wax) so they won't stick but you can separate them with waxed paper too.
I wonder if this would work using a teflon craft mat or silicone mat??? Also, wondering if you could get similar results with elmers glue??
I think nonstick mats would work great. You can do this with other glues but the results aren’t quite the same...not as transparent.
Shannon, do you know if you can reuse the sheets or are they "one and done"?

I don't think I have a video, I just tend to use them on journal pages or other mixed media projects.
I LOVE these videos! I hope you get this comment as it's over a year since you made this tutorial. I gave it a try last night on deli paper. This morning, it is stuck solid! Did I put too much paste on? I did go past the napkin edges so I'm wondering if that's what did it. Will try again today. Any tips on what I've done would be very much appreciated. They look so beautiful -- I really really really want it to work!! thanks again.
Well ... it's not the deli paper. I watched your friend test with local deli paper and it worked fine. I tried again - no luck. Today, I am experimenting again -- with very little paste (maybe I'm using too much) ... we shall see. the napkins which were stuck solid to the deli paper made beautiful pockets and tuck spots for my journal.
Why not leave them.on the background paper til you use them then peel off, im wondering at this point in time, did you have trouble getting the napkins apart from page protectors later or from laying them in a pike together?
I store the napkins in sheet protectors not stacked on each other and they don't stick to the sheet protectors at all.
Thanks for sharing. I have never heard of Yes Paste I am not even sure I can get that paste in Canada do you know if anyone has used this with Mod podge or gel mediums to get this result?
+sparkle5ms You can get a similar result with glossy finish adhesives. I've not found anything that gives the transparency that Yes Paste does but you can get close!
Wonder how, if you can find it and if it's still made, how kids' school paste would work. You know, the kind that came with the little spatula to spread it. Our Michaels does have yes paste.
Nancy Wiltshire Elmer's still makes paste. It's methyl cellulose which is the main ingredient in wallpaper paste so it would probably be similar to that. I would imagine it would make a good adhesive but I doubt it would provide the same transparency.
Do you put Yes! Paste on the bottom & the top of the napkin? Or just on the bottom?

Yes, it makes the napkins a little more translucent but not transparent like the Yes Paste does.
I wonder if you could lay some parchment paper over the steetched misshapen decal and iron it ?
I have no idea but that's a good suggestion!
When storing these decals, do they need to be sandwiched between papers, so they don't adhere themselves together into one gelatinous lump? I would think in a humid climate that might be worse than in a dry climate, but even a journal page that has a gloss medium on it will eventually glue itself together, unless waxed...with our ever popular Daddy Van's all natural furniture polish *ding*. (Insert sparkle on the tooth) let me know what you figure out for storing these little gems, because you have discovered a pretty awesome technique there :)
Letha Richardson thismuseofmine Yes they do need to be stored with waxed paper or deli wrap or something similar between them if you're going to stack them. Mine will go into sheet protectors and laid out so that they're not touching each other so they should be ok .
Ah- sounds great-- I will have to give that a try. I just hate to waste them by not storing them properly.

Some of mine were gifts but most came from Tuesday Morning :)
Parchment paper is easily available at Walmart in the same section as freezer paper.
What side of the parchment paper are you using?
Both! The parchment I buy is pretty much the same on both sides...not like waxed paper.

You can use it but the results aren't quite the same. The napkins don't get as transparent as they do with Yes Paste...for some reason. :)

Hello my Texas friend...so I went looking for Yes paste today and I thought you would like to know that Michaels and the Hobby Lobby do not carry it, at least in WI. I was so sad cause I'm on vaca and wanted to try the napkin technique. But fear not cause I found some bleeding tissue paper so I'll do that instead. As for the paste I did find it on Amazon. Napkins will be next weeks project.
Karen Olson Some stores do, some don't. It's very hit or miss. Jo-Ann's has it on sale right now but the sale price is still more expensive than Amazon.

I'm not aware of any products that are the same as Yes Paste. I think maybe the closest you could get would be Nori paste which is a Japanese adhesive.

Phoebe Gloss medium works fairly well....white glue, not so much! But do your own experiments cuz these things vary with different brands and even different climates.

I just wanted to say if people can't find YES paste (like me) or Nori paste - the way Nori paste is made is just by smoooshing steamed rice onto a surface with a spatula...so I guess that could be an option lmao...

Deli paper, different than parchment paper?
judith vance Yes but I can't really explain it. I think of deli paper as the stuff a nice deli would wrap your sandwich in. It's like waxed paper only better, thicker. The way I remember parchment paper is that's what you put on the bottom of the cookie sheet before you drop the dough down to bake.

I have been using Yes Paste for about 6 years and I find it a shame that more don't use it and other than you no one else has done a tutorial on it.
It's a hidden gem!
If you glue the napkin down with soft gel medium on to a piece of glass like you are making an acrylic transfer you should be able to lift them when they are dry. they should still be transparent.
Ros Jones Acrylic mediums, Mod Podge, PVA etc. can all be used to make a decal. But none of them will give you the same transparency you get with YES! Paste. They all leave a white haze on the napkin.
Oh I see, we don't have YES paste here.

I read somewhere that wallpaper paste could be a substitute for "Yes" paste, no maybe it was the frugal crafter that said that
leeder1g If you just want to stick stuff down, either will work. For this technique...YES! Paste is proving to be the only thing that works.
Perhaps placing little gel packs in your container will eliminate moisture
