    I don't like the idea of the mid season trade and for once agree with Chris Scott's comment.
    You are also 100% correct it would be too much an advantage for Victorian teams due to the relocation required for interstate teams.

    Vic teams will be favoured and have more trades, but just the nature of it, teams outside will benefit more when players want to move outside or Vic just based on lack of trade partners. Just like the normal trade period. Fringe players looking for more chances are most likely the only players being traded midseason.

    North have put a 5yr contract to Zurhaar so the Roo's have gotten on the front foot for that. It's a tricky situation though.
    I'd prefer to keep Zurhaar, yet if he's not prepared to go through the hard yards then by all means, leave and that be the end of it.
    There's a new sense of culture developing at North off the back of Larkey, Simpkin and Sheezel that they signed on not simply cause they love the club, but because they're prepared for the hardships that come from building a club from the ground up anew. So either players get onboard and perform or get out of the way.
    Considering the contract offer in front of Zurhaar already, it's hard to say that he would secure a band one compensation pick for leaving North, now the thing you gotta remember about that. North can trade that pick for an established player or multiple picks.
    Alot to unfold on this so it'll be interesting to see how things go

  • @tpm5
    @tpm5 4 місяці тому

    Gee the first couple minutes of discussion makes me truly realise how lucky AFL players are compared to say NBA players who can get sent across the country possibly 3 times in a season without ticking off the trade themselves. Whereas players here have so much more power, not neccesarily a bad thing but interesting for sure. i.e. Richmond couldn't just trade Tom Lynch to the highest bidder to get draft capital they have consult with him too.

    There is rumour about Baker leaving for Perth. But it could be just to get a bigger contract. There is absolutely nothing reliable about what possible club he is interested in. So if you hear he is leaving, or going to Eagles or Dockers... its just all made up. Ignore it. He may leave Richmond but is more likely to stay.

  • @BDub2024
    @BDub2024 4 місяці тому

    Brayshaw isn't going to go to Victoria. Saints are wasting their time. The only possibility would be if his partner wants to be closer to her parents if its required for health reasons or for looking after baby reasons (should one come along). Brayshaw will be set up for a good income and career in Perth after retirement. If he played all career in Perth and then after retiring ends up going to Melbourne to live, then all his income potential post retirement will be diluted. So he is at a stage now that he needs to consider going to a successful Melbourne club that will lead to career options post footy. That's if he wants to leave Perth one day.

    Here's another trade "interest" for you mate, and it involves a 1st year kid from Tongala at an interstate club, and 2 definite suitors from his home state. This is not a troll either, bank it. Naturally, the kid's current club ultimately decide whether they trade him this year or roll the dice.

    I’m conflicted about the mid season draft. I do think it will benefit VIC clubs more, but I love the idea of something happening mid season that could completely change the standings of the league. That said, if my team was dominant or building in the front half of season I wouldn’t like it. Instead my team is 13th on the ladder and popping ACLs every second week, so I might be a little biased, and thinking short term

  • @spindoctor6385
    @spindoctor6385 4 місяці тому +1

    I don't really see how this would be unfair to non Victotian sides unless you already believe that trading players at all is unfair. You still have to come up with a contract to satisfy the player and a trade to satisfy the other club. Why is it any different because it happens in June instead of October?
    I don't like the idea anyway. It is just another step conditioning us to be ready for player loans and three month contracts.
    I am not sure why the AFL is pushing for this. The only thing they gain is more time in the news cycle, especially if a high profile player moves mid season.

    • @PaladinCasdin
      @PaladinCasdin 4 місяці тому

      Because if the trade happens at the end of the year the players have time to get everything sorted before they need to start pre-season with their new club. Dunno if you've ever moved interstate but it's _not_ a fast process, could be weeks at least before the new player would be ready to go, which defeats the purpose of trading in a player to fill a gap. There's an insane amount of things to think about. For another Melbourne team they could be at training the next day.

    • @spindoctor6385
      @spindoctor6385 4 місяці тому

      @@PaladinCasdin It is not hard to move, people do it all of the time. It would be even easier when you have just signed a $1million contract and have all of the resources of a football club available.
      If the biggest concern is that the guy might be a bit busy and miss a few training sessions then I hardly see that as a major factor against non Victorian sides.

  • @nanreffehj

    I don’t think that the Suns will pay much for Rioli. Maybe he comes or Prestia but their priority is to convert their 2 first round picks and end of first round pick from North Melbourne to future picks as they have potentially 3 or 4 good academy kids coming through. The existing rules state that they won’t have automatic access to all if they make the finals unlike last year.

    To me equalisation equals fixing all teams start 0-0 giving the bottoms extra picks for playing bad football is just wrong and with Tasmania coming in 2028 they will get all the best young players to give their team a chance of being competitive I think that Footy was the best in the seventy and eighties when teams scored goals which is what fans come to see

    Personally I'm not a fan if the mid season trade period.
    I think its great and works well in American sports, but we are no where near the size and scope of organisations like the NBA.
    Our sport is so unique and trying to add these little things in for virtual no benifits doesnt make sense to me.
    Big discussion I know, but i dont feel its has its place right now in thr AFL.

    I’d say one of the major things Carlton are missing is a genuine small forward so was Geelong and then they went and got Stangle then they went all the way I reckon if the blues get Hayward, they will win the flag in the next few year and that’s coming from someone who hates Carlton!

  • @ShadowLight-kn7rl
    @ShadowLight-kn7rl 4 місяці тому

    Thing about mid-season trade Period, it basically becomes a second trade Period (obviously) so to counter your comment on it being an advantage to Vic teams and a disadvantage to every other teams, the groundwork behind the scenes between mangers and teams will frankly handle the conversations with players behind the scenes. If players aren't playing in the AFL side, then they're more likely to be considering a move. For that to happen players and clubs managers will have to facilitate the potential trade options. To avoid undermining the season's efforts though there would have to be an extremely more discreet level of communication than what we currently have as the potential problems of undermining another clubs depth/list is real. Speculation is to be expected but when it comes to clubs wishing to enhance their lists on a needs basis, then managers will do all the groundwork behind the scenes and it will by and large have to boil down to players making the first decision so that his or her family is prepared fir that potential move. Easier said then done, but something to eventually be improved upon with managers constantly asking questions about players in and outside their clubs and specific players.
    Now tbh. I don't like the idea of a mid-season trade Period. Why? Because it sows discord, uncertainty and disloyalty amoungst clubs and I believe that while not a management issue that can in fact be worked around, it does leave an unsavoury stain on clubs and the culture they're trying to maintain or instill as players are the ones who fly the colours on the field.

    There would have to be a lot of restrictions on the mid season trade which kinda contradicts the idea I reckon MSD should stay for good and maybe trade picks mid year or bring in pick purchasing for the end of the year.

    I think looking at the mid season trade period makes a lot of sense, it would help rebuilding teams get assets and build better teams for the future. In terms of the worries from interstate teams feeling disadvantaged in trading for players having a 20% trade kicker for a player being moved that could be paid outside of the cap to compensate and incentivise player to move could be the way to go .

    I personally am not a huge fan of a midseason trade period but wouldn't be completely against it. I do believe if it did get put in place, not that many trades would happen. Like as a North fan, getting in one player now wouldn't be super helpful for what we would need to give up. We would need to wait to the end of the year to really assess what we have on the list. I would guess only teams that are about 9th, looking to add like a key forward or back would try to make a trade, fill a whole that would make them push for finals. But they probably knew they needed that player during the normal trade period so the midseason trade period would just be another opportunity to complete trades they couldn't get done in the normal period.

    I like the idea of midseason trades but it just depends how it works and what restrictions. I think it would be good for say a player like tom Campbell who never gets a game at St Kilda, yet teams like Adelaide, Collingwood and North are looking for a second ruck, they will probably get one in the mid season draft, but If there was a midseason trades it could help Campbell get a chance to play as well as the team getting the ruck they want. But I also think it is on the teams to make sure their list is built well at the end of the year
