If they made this a prequel of how Maui became a demigod it would have been so much better
A movie about a man coming into his own, accomplishing things, getting stuff down. Without a woman along to "keep him grounded" and offer quips and snarky commentary that constantly attack his ego. Perish the thought.
That would be so much money for Disney… go harder on lore than exacerbating
@@That_Boi_Eddie? They give these movies a budget of roughly 200million. They could have if they wanted

The fact that Moana 2 was originally meant to be a TV show is giving me flashbacks to those Disney direct-to-video "movies" that have three episodes in them. Belle's Magical World, Atlantis: Milo's Return, etc.

Moana's sister is the first time I've noticed a sibling getting added purely to sell merch. I pictured the children going like this: "Moana has a sibling? I'VE got a sibling! If I buy their dolls I can be just like Moana!"
She was made purely for Walmart toys
💀
It feels like they saw we thought baby Moana was cute and wanted to replicate that with someone they can really milk instead of small flashbacks.
Totally agree she was conceived for merch 😂
@@hintsiren my thoughts exactly
First the star thing from wish and now this, Disney is being pretty shameless when it comes to making characters that purely exist to be marketable plushies lol
Lin Manuel Miranda not being involved should have been the first sign of its quality.
That mades sense 😂😂😂
That explains it
I actually love movies or music where he's involved, his music is catchy, vibrant, emotional, and unique. You can often tell when it's him. Hamilton: the musical, Vivo (a Netflix movie), Encanto, Moana... He just makes good music.
(Of course he has the help of other musicians, but when he's involved it's good)
Also turning it from tv series to movie you can see it was meant to be tv series
that was surely because it was supposed to be a TV series and LMM would have been way too expensive to write that many songs. so I think the fact that it was started as a TV series and then turned into a movie was a sure sign of uneven quality.
As someone who's sick af of Lin Manuel Miranda, I agree.
So are we not gonna talk about how this “little sis” was literally conceived in the first movie when Moana went on her journey because they feared she would die and still would need a new chief😭
WAIT WHAT I NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT THAT BUT IT MAKES SENSE HELP 😭😭
That’s kind of harsh-

@_StrayKidsForever_ that's what happens, though
@_StrayKidsForever_royalty is like super into that though.
it took like 2-3 songs, 3 ghosts visits and a vision for Moana to finally get off that island. I was constantly "yeah, so just leave already!". wouldn't have been surprised to also see Mufasa make a "Remember who you are" speech.
😂😂😂
Imagine if when Moana got struck by lightning and saw the ghost dude he was like “This is the afterlife, you’re dead because you got struck by lightning”
**credits roll**
@@Star_crossed_nerd**audience claps and cheers**
Or hear me out…… after the lighting bolt she did die, and her soul couldn’t come to conclusion of that so she made up a mission to “save” her people and at the end where she “dies” she actually comes back to life and we see she was dead most of the movie and everything she did was in her head trying to get her to cope.
It would had been really interesting mostly because maui being a Demi-God could had brought her back to life with the help of the clearly intelligent water. Water=life. Idk prob way to deep for children. And this stupid plot got 1billion bucks so what do I know?
As an animator who is struggling to survive right now, I appreciate you talking about this subject. Thank you for seeing us. Thank you for caring.
Are there just not enough jobs? Just curious :)
I don't think turning Moana into a demigod is a cop out. At least not if this was a miniseries where they could talk about it and explain what I'm pretty sure happened: humans can rise to demigodhood through great achievement and sacrifice. Maui wasn't born a demigod, he became one, and his tattoos show up as he earns them through his achievements. Moana, through saving the world twice at the expense of her own life, earned her place as a demigod. If this was a proper show, then I imagine her getting struck by lightning would be a cliffhanger and the next episode would have her learn more about how and why she was granted her new powers, probably from Maui
moana becoming a demigod is viable, but as to how people become demigods it depends on culture. for maui in the first movie, all of his achievements in the song youre welcome were very generalised as the specifics differentiate between cultures (i.e the way he catches the sun changes depending on countries). mauis the most popular and becomes one through the means you said, but in nz theres also hine titama who was a demigod before turning into a goddess alongside tawhaki whos the grandson of a goddess and a mortal, etc. would've been really cool for them to explore different demigods and how they all came to be
Honestly it's not surprising that she became a demigod at all after, the ocean chose her for a quest, it protected her, she is able to communicate with her ancestors, she's friends with another demigod... so yeah....
Watching a review for a movie sequel that was actually three episodes of a canned Disney Plus original series based on an original movie that’s getting a live action adaptation and a third installment in the animated movie series is TIGHT!!!

Moana 2 should've just been a series for Disney+ as planned....
that requires paying people more
No but they actually have a point. Introducing new characters that also have the potential for their own storylines. The overall plot of having to reunite the island people is such a goldmine for different storylines. It’s such a cohesive sound plot too which is something tv series suffer from. They really fumbled the bag they could’ve made something that had the success of something like avatar the last airbender
@@Gingrninja123 yeah, it's a plot more fitting for series. It's just so rushed to cram it all into 1 ½ hour
@ and that’s why it’s missing all of the substance cause said substance would’ve been the episodes 😭
I would have rather watched a high quality mini series than another disjointed/predictable quick to profit sequal
The worst part about Moana two is… WHERE IS THE PLOT GOING!? they already did all there is to do. They save the world they taught about the legend of the black mist. They already showed Maui. There’s no need for anything else!
TBF in a world where magic, gods and a sentient ocean exist there are heaps of stories to be found. it's just that this story was badly told and disjointed, due to it having been made for TV first.
Tbh it woukd have been cool to see Maui’s growing up
In any setting from generic to very specific there’s always something that can be expanded on

@@Hwarmingoh I loved her
Honestly i thought its a massive downgrade from the first one, but they managed to pull it together in the end
Maui shouldn't have gotten his powers back, in my opinion. It might have been an interesting role reversal, with Moana as the powerful one, and him adjusting to being ordinary.
I agree, it would have been a lot more interesting to have their roles reverse. Could have potentially made a 3rd movie with that plot, Maui as a human and Moana as a half--demi God or whatever she is.
This movie should've stayed as a series
Ah right, because not enough male characters are ignored or sidelined in movies recently apparently.
agreed. since there was also such a painfully obvious hook for the next movie, this could have been an interesting plot point. Nalo going after Moana and Maui for revenge, while Maui tries to become a demi-god once again.
it would be good for the plot but maui without his tattoos looked naked and it was very disturbing so i’m glad he got them back lol

I also hate it when movies like this, which are clearly set in a time before modern society was a thing, make pop culture references like "butt dials" (which will make sense in "2000 years") and fanfic.
It's so annoying
yes, thank you!!! i know Maui is a demigod and whatever, but he cannot see the future, so… how the fück would he make that joke? it bothers me to no end. either make it make sense within your worldbuilding, or fücking abstain from making that stupid joke.
i understand that, naturally, we will make references to modern things even in historical, ancient or fantasy worlds, because WE are from this era in time. i get that. HOWEVER, i think we can 10000% avoid tech-based jokes, or even referencing more recent cultultural phenomena. it’s not that fücking hard, says I, a fantasy writer.
@ How would you pronounce that f-bomb you made? Furk? Fook? I know that's a German accent symbol.
So you saying you hate the Genie for making pop culture references that shouldn’t exist in his time or Zazu knowing what a “throw rug” is or Timon and Pumbaa mentioning a “beeper”?
They do that all the time, ane characters like Maui are allowed to make those references because it shows that they’re not normal mortals.
@@Freezient i think it's because Genie is a god with power that transcends time and space? not sure Maui is that powerful
This movie really should have been a series. The songs sounded good at the time, but I forgot them immediately once they were over. The song Maui sings to Moana to give her confidence felt like it was 10 minutes long. The movie itself felt like a 45-minute episode.
this genuinely wouldve been amazing as a tv show. All of the new characters couldve been fleshed out properly instead of their character development being shoved into one song while also creating a connection w the audience cause I really did NOT care for them. Moreover that evil guy couldve been shown as a bigger threat. I forgot he existed like 30 minutes after watching the movie.
Edit: I havent finished watchinbg the video lol so sorry if I repeat some things he says in the video
You hit the nail on the head! All the vibes of a straight to VHS Disney sequel.
"Straight to VHS". Thanks for making me remember that I'm old.
They should have left it as a series, and each season, Maona earned a new set of tattoos until she looked like Maui. Then they could've did a movie where Moana turned into a demi god, and maybe her little sister started on her own journey after that.
Moana 2 with Lin Manuel Miranda would've been so good. We were robbed!😭😭
It would've been better but probably still would've just been fine if they tried to cram a series of events into a movie instead of the show like it was supposed to be

My little brother was so excited to go watch this in theatres so I took him opening weekend. It was... disappointing to say the least. I don't care about any of the random new characters they threw in. Maybe if it were just one or two, but like five?!
The only memorable thing about the movie was the little coconut dude. He was adorable and a better animal sidekick than the other three animals they had.

The biggest issue for me was how forgettable all the characters were, especially Loto, Moni, and Kotu. The movie barely developed their personalities and they fell under the stereotypical movie tropes. The plot and characters weren't worth caring for. It would've been so much better off as a spin-off-series
at least Loto had some reason to be there - to repair and upgrade the boat - but the rest really didn't matter at all, especially old farmer guy.
I dont find them forgetable. All of characters had important scenes.
Same. The songs were also really forgettable which i disliked.
@@Lordodragonss thats rly interesting...i lowk forgot all the side characters after the movie ended
the characters were SO annoying. Like tell me why they were acting like actual nuts while almost sinking the boat and dying multiple times on multiple occasions. And yeah all of them fell under the "quirky and silly" personality, (except the old man). Literally all of them. So annoyign and it made no sense. they were acting so bizarre dispite their life being on the line. Like the girl who was cutting the rope of the boat and almost knocking people out ??? LIKE WHAT???? 11:43 yep I think it’s valid point, because Teka in the first movie was so dangerous, scary and intimidating at her appearance or whatever she did in the first movie.
I WAS WAITING FOR THIS ONE ALEX
There were definitely issues here with buildup and payoff, mostly from things likely lost in the show-to-movie adaptation. They especially bug me because I could think of easy fixes before I finished walking out of the theater.
Example: "You've gotta get lost" went nowhere. They go through the portal, then find their way. To fix it, make the stars in the other end of the portal unreliable, and to find the island they need to stop searching and just go. Make it a "you can only find it if you're not looking" thing.
The Deus ex Machina ending bugged me too: No buildup or foreshadowing or anything, just here are the ancestors to revive the dead. My fix: Just before Maui goes through the portal, the bat lady warns him that Tefiti gave him his tattoos and made him a demigod, but that doesn't mean she's the only one who can take them away. One line, nice and simple.
Then get to the storm: Every lightning strike knocks off some of Maui's tattoos, leaving a shifting fluid edge that smears when he touches it. The fight continues, and by the time Moana wins and dies, he's only got a little left. He gives it to her, drawing on her first demi-god tattoos and bringing her back to life (we think for a bit he's lost it all, but he's still got his little man).
Moana feels bad for his loss, but he tells her each tattoo was earned through a great deed done, and a great story told. He earned a full body's worth once, and he'll do it again. Then the ancestors come to honor them (so they're not left out entirely), deliver Moana her paddle (glowy demigod tool, just like the actual movie), and their tattoos both shift, depicting their raising of the island; a shared legend for both of them.
Personally I think that would have been a better ending than Deus ex Ghosts.
9:34 this is kind of random, but I really like the villains voice I was expected it to be more high pitch squeaky bombastic I don’t know but it’s very calm. I really like it.😊

Nice, this video was uploaded just as I was looking for something to watch
5:53 i mean it makes sense. Moana 2 basically telling us to avoid the possibility of inbreeding. Its been thousands years already they gotta find more people.
12:16 those two songs are different though, Matangi is encouraging her to “get lost” look for another way, getting lost is how you find your destination. Maui is trying to motivate Moana and reminding her that it’s because of her he’s a better person. Matangi didn’t sing of how she’s a better person because of Moana, she just met her.
Also i will never understand why its such a hard concept to grasp that when a character is older they start to become more aware of how dangerous everything is, Moana is older in the sequel so it makes that she’d be more grounded and realistic, I don’t understand why people call this a “character regression” sure the Ocean is on her side but we see in both movies that it doesn’t always help her.
14:10 all she needs to do is touched the island, she did, but Nalo struck her, so she died from that and cause she needs to earn the tattoo and the status of a demigod, from what she’s been through from the first and second movie she deservedly earned that status
I want Moana 3 to be about the Europeans colonising the islands. You can’t say that would be boring.

I think this is a rare time where it would have benefitted to being a mini-series rather then a full blown movie. The story is not BAD, just rushed. Here is how I would fix it: Turn it into a reverse Odyssey story where Moana is searching for this lost island in order to reunite all the lost tribes. While on her travel, she FINDS her WAY to some of these tribes and recruits them as her crew to look for this island and break the curse that divides them. It could even build up and explain WHY Moana has this connection to the ocean, and why only she is able to get to these islands. Every now and then, run into mythical monsters and spirits, even see a familiar goddess again.
I could care less people told me it wasn’t worth watching but literally I bawled my eyes out after watching it, maybe it’s because the first movie had a really big impact on me but the second movie is actually good I mean yea lin manuel miranda wasn’t in it but it was very beautiful in my eyes yeah they could’ve added more to the movie like a little more into Maui’s back story in the movie it would’ve been amazing
9:30
I haven’t even seen Moana 2 but I don’t think I’ve ever had more of a crush on a Disney character than this like why did they make her so fine…
Moana 2 making over a billion dollars at the box office shows just how desperate parents are to find clean movies which they can take their kids to see in theaters (and, because of the quality of Moana, they probably had high hopes for Moana 2). Every studio keeps pouring their attention into dozens of half-baked film (or series) ideas that they throw on streaming services on the cheap, and then release around 1 attempt at a half-baked theatrical-level release once every 2-4 years. You can't do that. It's financial suicide, and leads to lower-quality products. Think of what they're doing now as making fast food. It's quick, cheap, and leaves you feeling a little sick, especially if that's all you eat. That's why in the PAST, they used to make 1-2 theater-quality movies EVERY YEAR and a smaller handful of tv series to add to rotation which received 20+ episodes ANNUALLY (not 8-12 episodes every 1-3 years). Ironically, in the past they were making less products, but there was more to watch because people actually wanted to watch them. Today they're spreading themselves too thin with quantity over quality--and it's killing them.
**edited typo

I can't believe they just used the "main character hallucinates of someone giving them a quest and then disappearing in the smoke without further explanation" trick 😭
Her people thrived for hundreds (thousands?) of years on one single island with a limited gene pool. It was only when things began to rot alive that this became a problem. But now we’re assured that they actually can’t live if they don’t increase/diversify the gene pool (which I assume is where ghost-Chief-guy is going with his doom portents).
Also struck me as odd that the literal chief and “wayfinder” now gets a fancy new title that seems to mean both the same thing *and less* at the same time?? Why??

Hey remember Buzz? Remember how even though people hated it they clearly loved the side characters? Remember how great the side characters were to the story? Lets do like the exact same thing but moana. Like exact same thing. Grumpy old person who hates life. Manic borderline autistic savant person who’s obsessed with designing and fixing a ship. A young person who is obsessed with the villages ancient hero story but has no self confidence to go on their own story? Yeah those were great.
It would have been so much more interesting if instead of Moana convincing people who didn’t want to go with her to go with her, she instead was reluctant to take people (idk maybe because teaching people to wayfind was harder than she thought and she had a close call and became scared that her people weren’t ready for the danger) and then those side characters were people who also longed to be voyagers just as Moana did in the first movie. That would explain their own motives and self desires. The old guy who may have even been a way-finder in training when Moana’s dad forbid going beyond the reef. The boat designer who started designing boats because she wanted to voyage herself and the cave of boats inspired her to think different. The historian dude who became obsessed with past voyagers because he aspired to be one himself.
Idk man, instead none of them actually wanted to go and non of them were particularly helpful in the voyage.
Hey! Aladin 3 was a banger. Robbin Williams really knocked it out of the park again. Premium grade-A comedy!
Yeah he did!
I thought Lion King 2 was pretty good as well
The fact that this ""Movie"" was so successful makes me scared for the future of animation
DISNEY NEEDS TO STOP!!!!
The thing that I think most people missed is the fact that Moana finally got old enough to start looking for a husband and when she looked around at the people on her island she was horrified to think she’d have to marry one of those people. So she’s been desperately trying to find other islands with people in the hope that they would have better marriage prospects for her. Her island has no competent males of the right age (the himbo who went with her and the weird dancing boy are apparently her only options). If the island had capable young males she wouldn’t have put together a crew of such incompetent and ill-suited people. You see the sheer joy on Moana’s face at the end of the movie when she spies boats on the horizon (one of which contains a young man who appears to be the correct age). While the movie doesn’t spell this subplot out (and I may have made it up entirely) it made watching her desperately trying to leave her island much funnier. I was cheering her on and saying “You go girl! There are plenty of fish in the sea! He’s probably out there somewhere waiting for you!” 😂
To be expected, all the big players make prequels and sequels because they know it will sell.
Why take a risk on a new story when you know you can produce another 10 star wars movies, 5 Moanas, 7 Aladins, 22 Avengers and so on.
Honestly this is my favourite skillshare ad read to date. Things he said sounds genuine and I apreciate it.
7:01 so is this just the crew form light year again?
The funny thing is how they were looking for new people but they already had the canoo girl on the island with a whole different accent, where on earth did she come from?
In my mind the movie went like this: bat lady tempts Moana to make an evil transformation and trick her into some kind of deal and Moana would be struggling to agree at first, but then agree and gain some sort of power that can also be used for evil or hurt others and she would have to deal with the moral implications of that deal and how to still be good. Instead she just outright helps her with a magic plot device
Yeah... I got the same feeling when I saw this in theaters. I actually fell asleep during the final battle - I was THAT bored.
Matangi is the only thing I enjoyed genuinely in the film. Nothing else.
Why is Matangi so creepy though. Like she had a vicious plan for the new demigod girl
I have a theory that a human can't become a demigod without first dying and having their life evaluated by the gods or ancestors. Maui may very well have been the first "disposed of" baby, and the gods made him a demigod to promote keeping your child alive so that they can enjoy all the wonderful lives they were meant to have. What I'm saying here is: Maui should be viewed as an example of the benefits of choosing to give your child up for adoption, if you don't want your child. Not killing them.
And Moana being a demigod now means she and Maui MIGHT end up together. It's a good idea. He pulls up islands, and she directs people where to go to find such islands. It's a good match.
Disney really forgot how to make good stuff
Aladdin 3 was actually freaking great
For a film that had the most wasted potential, it got nominated in the Golden Globe Awards for Best Animated Feature.
Let that sink in

Aladdin 3 was at least a 8/10 simply for John-Rhys Davis playing Dilf Cassim, okay!
Truth be told, i think we need more tv series based off Disney movies: Aladdin, Hercules, Little Mermaid, Rapunzel. Like, it's really not a bad idea!!!
Moana 2 is a cashgrab plain and simple
Aladdin 3 is fire for a sequel to a degree
