Hotel Transylvania isn't about not letting your 118 year old go. It's about letting go of trauma, letting go of prejudices, not forcing your trauma and fears on your kids, and learning to get back out in the world after suffering a devastating loss. This isn't Mavis's story; it was Dracula's.

This film is basically a big budgeted Saturday Morning cartoon, and really that is why I love and never understood the dislike that many critics give it. Plus I just have to appreciate animated films that actually takes advantage of the fact that its animated with having the character move and act in over the top ways that wouldn't work in Live-Action and of course it makes fun visual humor.
That's also why the sequels have an episodic nature to them. They aren't really trying to tell some big story, their just fun, little, innocent stories
I'd thought you'd have more love for this as an animator. When this came out, I was already sick of the lack of exaggerated moves like we grew up getting in 2D. The extreme sight gags, the full-body expressions, the rubberband bodies, the complete disregard for reality in lighting and physics. "Ooh look how realistic we can make cgi character rigs!" Boring. This movie was a buffet to a starving person at the time. Also weird saying Drac's accent was copying Gru. Sandler has always done weird accents. It's a major schtick of his, plus obvious for Dracula. Wasn't Gru just a Boris & Natasha ripoff? Alex might just be watching films too close to one another & connecting invisible dots based on favorites. Is it deep? No, no one expects a Sandler film to challenge us. But is it entertaining and eye-candy to watch? Absolutely.
Not only the accent, but in a bunch of aspects. What he's somehow failing to take into account is animated films take years to make. It's not like in live-action where a film will come out and a semi-decent rip-off can be ready to print in six months time. Particularly the first film in a series of animated films can take several years to come to fruition. Hotel Transylvania first started production in 2006 but kind of went through a bit of development hell. At one point, he talks about the non-stop moving and comparing it to Dexter's Lab, which makes sense since the director of HT was the creator of DL. It's not really copying when it's your own work and all-in-all, it's not really a fair claim to say one animated film is copying another with only a 2-year gap between releases when they take so long to make. As an animator himself, you'd think he'd be more mindful of that.
Yeah but maybe the best thing is watching films with weird expressions and body movements instead of wanting studios to fall the format of every kids cartoon

Well put. Gennedy has a video on UA-cam answering questions and talking about animation. It's great and if you watch it, it will explain how this movie (and so much of his other stuff) turned out the way they did. He's always been a fan of using exaggeration in movement to really convey the emotion of a scene (which works for animation but not live action). It's part of why I've always loved his work.

"Hotel Transylvania" was one of my favorite movies growing up, and the franchise had so much promise, but by the third installment, it started to decline for me. I get that it’s aimed at kids, but kids aren't naive. The overuse of silly gags, like fart jokes, felt unnecessary. The second movie could have wrapped up with Dennis not having any powers yet still living a long life, as it sent a questionable message that you must completely change who you are to be accepted. The third movie could have maintained a similar storyline, but instead of Dracula "zinging" with Ericka (if that's how her name is spelled), it could have shown his love for her developing gradually, highlighting that moving on doesn't mean forgetting one's past love. For the fourth movie, a compelling plot could revolve around Johnny grappling with the fact that he will age while his wife and son will remain young, leading him to face the choice of accepting his fate or exploring the possibility of becoming a vampire.

11:46 I was gonna say, I'm surprised this isn't your favorite movie. Given your tastes expressed in past videos, I'd expect Mavis to be towards the top of your list of animated girls.
9:29 Funny you mention that, since the director of this movie is Genndy Tartakovsky. The man behind Dexter's Laboratory, Samurai Jack, and The Powerpuff Girls.
Lol I was gonna say this until I noticed you beat me to it. Yeah, it's telling that the art style of the movie would be compared to that of shows made by the same person. I wonder if Alex realized that at some point, or if he just subconsciously put 2 and 2 together
At the time the animation was uniquely fluid for 3d, not confined to the proportions of the model, most things couldn't stretch like this. Other things couldn't do this cartoony movement in 3d. Now everyone can do it so it just looks unnecessarily jumpy in a 'keep the kids engaged!' way, but it had been very impressive the first time.
I didn’t like the toilet humor in the beginning, but I found the sentimental ending surprisingly touching. Dracula’s reaction brought a tear to my eye. 🥲
When I first watched this movie and saw the credits, my jaw was on the floor. I honestly had no clue that this film (and it's sequels), was directed by Genndy Tartakovsky. I grew up watching his shows as a girl from Dexter's Lab, to Samurai Jack, to Clone Wars 2003, and Sym-Bionic Titan. Samurai Jack in particular was my favorite cartoon growing up as a kid. So, when I saw who directed this movie I was shocked to see Genndy's name, since he's not particularly known for doing 3D animation. Speaking of, I'm still pissed that his Popeye movie never got off the ground.

@@lauracerqueiramachado8979 not only that but learning to accept those as who they are are. Whether Dennis was a vampire or not. Hi Alex, I’m 60 and I LOVE the Hotel Transylvania movies! 😜 The voices are fun to listen to, the animation is quirky and unique, and they’re family-friendly. I’ve watched them dozens of times !❤
I'm going to nerd out a little for no reason at all. If Mavis turns 118 years old in this movie, which is basically turning 18 for a human, that means vampires in this movie age at a rate 6.555555555 times less than humans. After some research on Count Dracula's age in this movie he is 537 years old which, if I am correct at the pace of their aging comparative to humans, dracula was 81.9 years old in human years, 63.9 human years old when Mavis was born, and 64.5 human years old when the hotel was built. His wife was 220 years old when Mavis was born (33.56 human years old), and died at 33.7 human years old.
Well, maybe vampires in this universe don't grow at a steady 1 to 1 rate as humans. Maybe they're like most animals which grow and reach maturity very quickly, then age slowly after that point. 🤷
I’m surprised you didn’t go over why Dracula hated humans in the first place, because his one true love was killed by humans who hated monsters. That was a very deep touching moment between Johnny and Dracula
Early 2000s were a VASTLY different time. Truly a testament to the phrase, "it was different back then". Today, it probably would've been a miracle if it had made it to the big screens at all!
Johnny was initially going to be a modern version of Jonathan Harker from the Dracula novel, I thought maybe in a sequel they could reveal he is English (but maybe he lost his accent after traveling so much), his surname was Harker and he had a sister called Mina who would like monsters as much as he did and would become Mavis’ best friend
14:00 With a movie that has Vampires, Werewolves, Frankenstein, the Invisible Man, Big Foot, and other mythological monsters living in a hotel, this line is the most unrealistic part of the entire movie.
@@jebVlogs556 i think he was just illustrating what people have actually said. I've had nightmare dates before, myself. One woman claimed that the moon was just a giant weather balloon. People believe crazy stuff sometimes.
What gets me with the Zing thing was Mavis is only 118. In vampire time that is suppose to be about 18. He was already 25. So, she is going to outlive him by centuries if not more. Did that mean she was supposed me be alone for most of her life. In the later part of the series they 'fixed' that by acting like that Zing rule wasn't a real thing.
I feel like the moral of this movie was that you gotta let go of the reins at some point when it comes to your kids. At some point they become their own people
One thing I’ve heard A LOT is that Mavis should turn Johnny into a vampire. Because while she is a vampire and she’ll live forever, Johnny is human and will end up dying (like a normal human). Same with their son Dennis. He’s vampire and will live forever while his dad will die at some age. 😂
The thing about Johnny lying, saying he “hated monsters” was because he and Dracula actually bonded and Johnny understood why Dracula did what he did. He willingly broke Mavis’s heart because he respected Dracula as a person and a friend and I hated that all the sequels had the same problem of Johnny being dumb and Dracula just hating him/not accepting him over and over.

I think their concept of zing is a meant-to-be soulmate fanfic thing and not infatuation, but it's not deep or a real message. It's presented like magic in this cartoon world. It's Sandler barebones world building between gags. The 3rd movie (worst animated) has it again with older ppl.

I can’t believe that Megamind, despicable me, and how to train your dragon came out in the same year
We didn't know how good we had it
Believe it.
2010 was a crazy year for animation
Mavis: Follow me😏
Johnny : Oh no Mavis I can't I have to leave🥶
Mavis : You sure it will be fuuuunnn😏
Johnny : okay 😅😅
you'll definitely do Shrek
100% he’s not gonna pass up on that

I mean you kind of missed that a big reason he wanted to make a hotel for monsters is bc humans killed his wife / mavis's mom. So he wanted to keep his daughter safe

This is one of those movies where the sequel superseded the first film. Like the first one is very good. It was a great establishing film for the characters and the set up of the overall franchise but two was the best in the franchise and we don’t talk about Three. Also Blobby, Alex. His name is Blobby & he has a bigger role in 2.
The 2nd movie is a clever and fun reflection of how cultures and people change with time, Dracula had to face the fact that the human and the monster world was no longer as rough and dark as he remembered it
@@lauracerqueiramachado8979 not only that but learning to accept those as who they are are. Whether Dennis was a vampire or not. Hi Alex, I’m 60 and I LOVE the Hotel Transylvania movies! 😜
The voices are fun to listen to, the animation is quirky and unique, and they’re family-friendly. I’ve watched them dozens of times !❤
I love this movie man, it was so fun. The storyline, the jokes, animation style, everything was amazing.
His wife was 220 years old when Mavis was born (33.56 human years old), and died at 33.7 human years old.
this is too much math for me to read😔 I'm having a stroke😔
Thats one hell of an age gap
Ew wth 😭
This would add to the idea of Jonny fearing growing old and contemplating becoming a vampire.
6:09 clearly you’ve never seen that Pinocchio movie where he says, “father 😩 when can I leave to be on my ownnn…. I’ve got the whole world to see 💅”

Shrek 😅has so much adult themes
Its a wonder it got passed as a kids movie 😅
Yea, watching Shrek as an adult is such a different experience
its because ratings were diffrent back then.
Early 2000s were a VASTLY different time. Truly a testament to the phrase, "it was different back then". Today, it probably would've been a miracle if it had made it to the big screens at all!

The weird part is that Quasimodo is depicted as a monster despite a big part of Hunchback is that he ISN'T a monster.
“Yeah, weird!” - Kronk
Johnny was initially going to be a modern version of Jonathan Harker from the Dracula novel, I thought maybe in a sequel they could reveal he is English (but maybe he lost his accent after traveling so much), his surname was Harker and he had a sister called Mina who would like monsters as much as he did and would become Mavis’ best friend

Guess I found my lunch entertainment, nice timing Alex preciate it
Who the hell have you gone on dates with? Now I want animated story times of your odd experiences.
The Hotel Transylvania series is like the cringey Y/A movies you normally review only animated and slightly more fun.
I love how you literally skipped the entire movie😂😂
For some reason i just now realized Dracula looks like Adam Sandler bc he’s his voice actor
Dracula is a single dad because humans killed his wife.. that's why he isn't a big fan of humans. Seems like a pretty good reason to me.
Alex be like: Well Time to binge watch 3 more cartoon movies now.
Also fun fact Johnny is named Johnny because in Bram Stokers Dracula the man who visits Dracula is named Jonathan Harker
Hotel Transylvania is one of my favorite animated movies. So good
The thing about Johnny lying, saying he “hated monsters” was because he and Dracula actually bonded and Johnny understood why Dracula did what he did. He willingly broke Mavis’s heart because he respected Dracula as a person and a friend and I hated that all the sequels had the same problem of Johnny being dumb and Dracula just hating him/not accepting him over and over.

I think Alex watches these movies exactly like how I watch his videos (and UA-cam in general) lol. Like I'm making myself french fries at 2 a.m. and I just put UA-cam on in the background to not here the demons that totally haven't haunted my house and are not even here. Yep.
I don't know why so many people care about it so much though. I've never seen Alex as a professional movie critic so I don't actually care if his criticism is fair or not (at least if his goal was being a "movie critic" then he's not doing a very good job at achieving it). If I enjoy the video and it keeps the demons out of my mind and (fingers crossed) out of my sight, it's a good video! And so is this one.
I was originally gonna rewatch some older videos but I was pleasantly surprised with a new one!

Just like with Despicable Me, these movies get worse the longer they go. The first one actually has heart to it, and the longer the series goes, you can tell it’s just a cash grab.

**Luke Skywalker has entered the chat**
They really said "marry your first boyfriend from freshman year of college," which is the worst advice you could possibly give someone.
thats a weird read off a kids movie, think you need help
I think their concept of zing is a meant-to-be soulmate fanfic thing and not infatuation, but it's not deep or a real message. It's presented like magic in this cartoon world. It's Sandler barebones world building between gags. The 3rd movie (worst animated) has it again with older ppl.
Oops, that's me. I can't see how that's not a million times preferable to being single until 30 then having to rush a relationship in order to have kids.
how did you get that from watching hotel Transylvania?
When did they ever say that ever? Why are you lying? They literally say that it's a magic monster thing. It's fantasy.
