It's incredible to me that one determined cyclist and fan can provide much better grand tour coverage and analysis than Sky, FloSports, or any other media network... and on UA-cam. Keep up the good work!!!
I think they believe this kind of coverage would be too difficult for the average viewer to understand.
I mean it is literally his job now...
Second to none!!!!
@@rocketpig1914 Indeed. It’s not that they can’t, it’s that they chose not to
Chris horner and lr are the best youtube channels i only watch eurosport when i miss the race because they are the first to upload
The best highlights around. Thanks.
Primoz's most iconic victory?
As a Slovenian, I actually think his most iconic victory is the Olympic time trial. Why? The commentator on the national TV Tomaz Kovsca summed it up with one of the best lines in commentary ever. "You can stop now Primoz. All the bad is over." Remember how Primoz actually continued after the finish line and they had to stop him? The comment wasn't just about the 50-mile race but about all the disappointment, pain, anguish, bad luck, and doubt he had after Tour de France. A month after the Olympics and my eyes still get wet about this one.
Yeah the willpower and mental strength of Primoz are amazing. I have mad respect for him
Agree, as a Roglic fan his Olympic TT win was a huge statement of his willpower and ability.
I asked for Roglic v Bernal - and I can’t believe we got it! Great stuff from both of them - entertaining, racing, leaving it all out there - and sportsmanship. I take my hat off to Bernal for such a decision, and of course also to Roglic for the performance. He got a Royal Flush and just laid it out there and said - read ‘em and weep gentlemen.
I placed 9th at a local mountain bike race a few weeks ago and my only regret was not having an LR recap of it.
I’m jealous. My mountain bike racing career got cut short when I developed ME/CFS (like long haul covid) when I was 23 (in 1993). I miss being able to put the hammer down. Keep going man. Pretty soon it will be 2nds and 3rds and then wins.
@@keirfarnum6811 Yikes, very sorry to hear that. Mine is certainly not a "career". I'm a 50yo retired triathlete who now dabbles a bit in gravel and mountain bike races for fun.
What an epic stage! Bernal with his 2019 tour winning signature long range attack in the rain , roglic destroying the field and screaming at the line! Kuss stealling bonus seconds. Thats a textbook epic grand tour stage!
I think long-term Bernal was a big winner today. I'm hearing tons of cycling fans saluting that performance, he showed more character today in a loss than we saw over the entire Giro.
I agree with you I'm a newer fan of the sport and only watched the races starting with the Giro, back then there's only so little I know about how the entire thing works but now that I have a pretty firm grasp of everything I I give mad respect to Egan. Looking forward to support him throughout his career
True, to me at the end of this vuelta , i will have much more respect for bernal who is not happy about not winning and tries to shake up things than all the other riders who ride deffensively for a top 5
“than we saw over the entire Giro” totally agree with you, but had we seen more of Passo Giau we might feel differently about the character he’s shown this year.
@@alanpride5884 tottaly agree with you, the giau stage coverage was a f***img shame!
As he got zero second on his closest competitors, it will matter how he responds. If he cracks in the next two days and slips in the standings then this effort will be a colossal mistake. If he retains his non-podium spot it will be a push.
If he can replicate this effort and climb up to third (like he was in the virtual standings if he kept Roglic's wheel) then yes, this was a good move. But I'd give him 1:3 odds this will not be a good stage for him moving forward.
I agree we can salute his performance but what he does with it over the next couple days will make this stage a win or a loss for him.
To me most iconic is still his victory at Liege
To come back from such heartbreak and dissatisfaction at the tour (plus all the shit Belgian fans gave him fir not pulling for WVA at worlds), and win a monument, even with sprint controversy, just shows so much heart and mental fortitude.
Roglic truly is a different breed.
Liege was great but I just can't get past the fact that he doesn't win without LouLou's colossal blunder (which I don't view as a controversy). But I really like Roglic and just wish he'd come to the sport younger.
I as a Belgian am sick of people saying Roglic shouldve pulled for WVA. Its a nations competition, Roglic didnt have to do anything just focus on himself. I do still think the other guys couldve paced more to bring back Alaphilippe but both Alaphilippe and WVA wouldve probably beat all the other riders in that chasing group so chasing after Alaphillipe wouldve been a dumb movebc it would cost them strength they could use for a sprint for bronze. It was a frustrating world championship as a Belgian since a WVA win was definitely possible but you cant expect other nations to help you get the gold.
Bernal and Roglic honouring no risk no glory today
Roglic when Egan attacked be like "oh no. Call an ambulance. But not for me."
The best part about this whole break-away was watching two top class riders working together and pulling though like riding partners. Of course one of them was going to win, and it was tough to see Bernal fall off Roglic's pace. In the end it doesn't' matter who won, it was a moment road cycling could be proud of (just took an ex-MTB-er and an ex-ski jumper to make it happen!).
Well well well, today we saw disc brake win. 😛
2 of my favourite riders riding like there's nothing to lose. much respect to Roglic and Bernal.
The more I see of Roglic, the more I like him. Gutsy competitor on the bike, it's a duel to the death on wheels, and seems a decent person off the bike. This is great for the sport!
Roglic is so likeable. If he was ten years younger, who knows what he could accomplish, he's still a beast
@@Shadowboost 'If he was ten years younger' - in a way you can see what a young Rog would be like in watching Pogacar
Roglic is underrated. Roglic>Pogacar
Roglic is the man who never quits when other people would be mentally out of the game after so many failures, it's quite astounding.
Great return to form from Egan
Chapeau to both Egan and Roglic. Yes, best ride by Roglic. Iconic. Kuss looked great. Loved that grin when he saw Roglic.
Hated to see that crash with Vlasov and was surprised when he crossed the line. I figured he would be DNF.
Nice to see Mäder on the front!
Enjoyed this stage. Concerted effort on the front with a big pay off for Roglic. However, Bernal did what he set out to do and had fun riding his bike. Still in recovery mode from Covid, maybe, but he's a force to be taken seriously!
Thanks for the recap!
always waiting for the LR breakdowns, best cycling content out here

Kuss to win the Gamoniteiru ... Smiling face of course because he is fresh and can control the moves of Movistar TBV and Ineos ... By himself. Crazy eagle 🦅 kuss.
Too much expectation on Kuss but the condor showed who is best. Kuss does not have the watts
It is only after looking back on this stage that we realize that we've witnessed history. Classic.
“Eh, uh, why not eh?”
It's nice eh
it was super hard but super nice eh?
You do, in my opinion, the best stage analysis.
Super-human performance from Roglic. Supreme.
That Rogla finish line scream, I felt that deep into my soul. What a crazy ride, so so so impressive
I'm already looking forward to next years tdf. Imagine Pogi and Rogla on full strength fighting for the win in these huge solos...
I think a fully healthy Bernal can compete on that level next year
That has already happened, Bernal quited and pogacha beat Roglic 🤷♂️
@@inspktr51 Bernal had already his backache
Pogastrong more like. Not even breaking sweat climbing last years tour
Just so happy that GC Kuss is alive. Go Sepp!
Oh how epic Pog v Rog should have been at the Tour. They are both on a different planet to the rest right now, as this stage proves.
Yes, but new generation is also coming and could displace Pogačar soon in the future and Roglič will start to feel his age (or maybe because he came to the sport late his "material" in not worn-out. )
Agree that this is Primoz’ best win ever. Phenomenal performance
Am I the only one frustrated by it? In a sport filled with doping these superhuman performances this year by the 2 Slovenian riders is a bit beyond the pale and hard to root for 🤷♂️
Roglic flaunting his EPO use. Kinda sad.
@@Sampsonoff ...funny statement. Roglič is riding for a Dutch team and Pogačar for UAE (Italian) team... Or you wanted to say, that both have hidden stuff (brought from home like uranium tablets :-)) ) and the rest of peloton is clean? I believe they are as clean as the rest of peloton.
@@Sampsonoff they are all on the juice, LR even pasted the sauce bottle in the power data..
Keep em coming LR. Superb content. I suppose you've never been to Slovenia... Pay yourself a trip to the national park of Triglav, take some room in Kranjska Gora and you may find the answer why are Slovenians becoming cycling beasts... 😎 ❤️ from Serbia
Great stage breakdown LR..... Couple of comments:
1. Catalonia pain face 05:33.... LMAO
2. With stages 18, 19, 20 being hilly, it will be interesting if Roglic can hold off rest of the field.
3. Egan made it interesting, too bad he couldn't have followed Roglic's wheel.
For nr 2 i do not think he will lose time on stage 19 maybe 18 and jumbo looks strong enough to control stage 20 so i would say he will hold off the rest of the field.
I would say calling stage 18 "hilly" is a huge understatement
Covadonga is very hard. Rode it in 2002. The region is great for cycling holidays. Amazing scenery, and quiet, mountainous roads.
I felt those crashes close to my heart ahaha, crashing in the rain sucks horribly
yeah, but at least the road rash isn't as bad :/
@@ianism3Very true.
Sepp Kuss...making me proud as always! Top domestique!🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Love the "head on a swivel" comment 😂
Epic win for Rogla and kudos to Bernal for putting up a proper fight. More of this kind of thing!
Clash of the friction' titans. Courageous move by Bernal. Courageous move by Roglic to take up the challenge - and take it to him without just trying to rein it in. Definitely feels like they both had something to prove after not having the TdF they wanted.
bernal won the giro? he didnt go tour?
NO WAY! GOLD COMES 1ST. ALWAYS!
#2 L.B.L.
But my personal opinion is when we see a ROG - POG duel on the highest mountains in the last stages
he won liege last year
We’re so used to seeing the GC leader play defense and have their teams strangle the race with pacing. So JV and Primoz are true heroes of the sport, gambling it all for glory.
A iconic stage and winner. All credits to Bernal and Roglic, two true champions !!
Amazing win by an amazing guy.
And great action by Bernal!
Thanks for giving us that good good highlight commentary so I could enjoy this stage for the epic race it was after the fact!
RIP Gino ❤
Yes. Best victory ever!
Guys can you imagine the form Roglic had in July? 6 weeks after he smashes the olympic time trial and 8 weeks later he dominates in the mountains...althoug his whole build-up was focused on the TDF...in my personal opinion he would have beaten Pogacar...similar in the mountains while winning the time trials...it´s a pity that he crashed out
True, it would be an epic battle.
"GC Kuss is alive and well" Oh don't we know it!
Thanks for the great vids LR. The podcast and recaps are amazing
It's been over 2 years since that wall trashed Froome so I'd have thought he'd have recovered by now, it'd certainly be interesting to see him go up against Roglic.
I think Roglic is great, and Sepp staying back to keep an eye on Yates was a good move. Thanks for the coverage, good job, best bit of commentary for a good while.
Go, Primož!❤
Mad respect for Bernal, feeling sorry for him getting caught.
Was a super "panache" move from him (and Roglic too).
That was epic stage, great win from Rogla, big respect to Bernal.
Epic stages make for epic racing, gotta love the Lagos de Covadonga climb
Still enjoying this video. So much great content, LR
"Flicking imaginary riders" - That line killed me 😂
Chapeau, Egan! 👏👊
More exciting than the Tour! Roglic showed his is the best in a field of world class riders.
Very well said 👏👍LR
keep on going explaining things and that...
Can you imagine that: Primoz was atop of doping last year and this year he is already left behind!
Thanks for being so amazing!!!
I can't help but feel that Egan Bernal had a slow start to the race because he was still feeling the effects of contracting Covid-19, and the resulting complications that it had on his condition/training. That, and considering the fact that he was at his peak form at the Giro back way back in May, I think that he's starting to come fine form in these last two stages. Primoz looks the most relaxed that I've ever recalled seeing him. I think that's the valuable lesson that he's come to learn, and it's helping him to stay in the zone.
Thanks for posting , always love your analysis of the job in hand 💪🚴♀️🚴♀️🚴♀️🚴♀️🚴♀️🚴♀️🚴♀️🚴♀️🚴♀️🚴♀️🚴♀️🚴♀️
Roglic is a MONSTER
If Roglic doesn't crack big on stage 18 it's a spectacular "nail in the coffin" moment. If he blows up and loses time and possibly the red jersey on stage 18 because he emptied the tank on stage 17 then it's an iconic bonehead moment. But he did seem to know his tactics as he let Bernal pull all the way up the climb and lead down the other side and only started to contribute partway through the valley section. Roglic again let Bernal lead-out the beginning of the final climb and so he definitely seemed to make some excellent tactical decisions to conserve his energy and use Bernal as much as possible. Definitely an iconic moment and a show of power and dominance.
What was that Twitter account with Roglic’s power data?
Ammattipyoraily
Bernals won 2 Grand Tours but even he can't live with Roglic!
Great review and race analysis 🔥
I disagree that Roglic on the final climb was doing Pogacar levels of power. He finished the climb with the same time gap to the other GC riders as at the bottom of it. Sepp Kuss rode it at 6w/kg. Therefore Roglic rode it in similar fashion (since the draft is negligible on such steep gradients). Roglic just held a steady pace, nothing thermonuclear on the Covadonga. What's impressive is that unlike the rest of the GC riders, Roglic did this effort after a big attack with Bernal on Llomena and after motoring through the valley whereas the others just sat in the draft of Bahrain.
Kuss 6.1w/kg in the wheel on Covadonga for 27 minutes. Draft and pacing matters on the climb, it is not that steep
@@LanterneRougeCycling on 9+% I don't think it matters that much. The speeds they were going weren't that great.
@@ThisIsANameBruh The average gradient of the climb is 7.5%. Blocken studied this in "Aerodynamic analysis of uphill drafting in cycling" this year and at around 20km/h speed on a 7.5% slope the power savings are over 5% which is significant
@@LanterneRougeCycling I'm not disagreeing with that. I thought that covadonga was a fake news climb. That the average comes down cause of the downhill parts with most of it being in excess of 8%
You are doing a wonderful job. So much so, you are getting rid of your competition. The Chris P cycling show is no more. He said he was too busy to make Vuelta content but his next video has him buying fast-food. Yeah too busy!! GCN is one big paid advertisement. Keep up the good work.
Iconic maybe not in the sense that Rog is not known to employ long range tactics. So this was more of a “Formidable” and memorable… take you’re fate in your own legs and drive the victory home. The weather, the athletes and the scene made for a dramatic and powerful career defining win. Iconic no, Fantastic and exceptional, Hard YES.
VERY good videos by the LR, many hurrays 🖖🏻
Bernal deserved more for his effort
I agree
What does that mean? He got what he got. Are u saying his team didn’t support!? Roglic certainly goes him.
@@MW-gi1tr I'm not talking about the team. For the effort and risk he put in this attack he deserved more than to end up in the rest of the bunch of favourites. Such an attack before the last climb is what we, the fans, want to see and now this attack didn't gain him any time on the rest of the GC riders. So basically it proves that Mas, Lopez, Haig did the right thing for their GC spots, which means it justifies their 'defensive' riding style in yesterdays ride (although during some other days Lopez and Mas definitely showed attacking styles). I guess the fans prefers attacks over 'defensive' riding, that's why I think he deserved more, since Bernal is one of the reasons yesterdays stage was such a nice thing to watch.
Jack Haig probably does a better final TT than MAL, so couldn't Lopez' attack be about putting more time between himself and Haig before the TT?
Roglič ❤💖❣💪Kuss 💪👏😍, the best of TJV. Primož Roglič is my favorite.
Roglic is such a great champion!
Bernal has shown real panache and fire this season. This attack; even though it didn't pay off, is what makes a true legend. I also totally agree, cards on the table; Rogzilla delivered BIG time today. Maybe his boldest move ever, and certainly his most iconic victory. In his career as a GC leader, he's gone from too aggressive to too defensive, but this Vuelta may represent his best. Taking bonus seconds on rivals, letting breakaways hold the lead, and laying down a thermobiblical hammer to snuff out the race. 💥☄️
I Think Olympic victory is more iconic if you take into account his problems this year.
But Bernal, HUGE respect for his effort - if you do not try you will not succeed. Like Primož said: no risk no glory :=)
No, this is excellent victory, but Olympic gold was most iconic victory ever!
Like the recap allot!
Mad respect to Bernal, he tried his all, failed this time unfortunately, but I I that he will come back back stronger. Huge performance from Roglic though
When you showed the power data around 4:05 they are the same, is egan bernals missing?
No mention of the Blue Shoes??? What sort of in depth analysis video is this, will have to go back to watching GCN+
Watched this live and could only wonder what the lantern video caption would be. It didnt disappoint.
If we forget about Eiking and Martin 😂
It's fucking crazy how these pros can bomb down these hills while it's pouring rain. Balls of steel.
Best blue shoes since the Badger....
Only Pogacar can compete or beat Roglic, no one else.
bernal can, but let us see if peak form bernal can beat peak form pog and rog
In recent races when Roglic has lost it is due to crashes. Except for the TT in the 2020 TDF that was all Pogi.
Remember that last descent when Ineos goes to disc brakes next year. Maybe Bernal was trying to keep Roglic close for the valley or maybe Bernal had to break so early going into turns that Roglic easily closed down any gap that opened between switchbacks. Not that it determined the race outcome - the only equipment that was gonna help Bernal today was an e-bike.
Ineos are going on disk brakes - rumor or confirmed? Also interesting thing is who use electronic shifters and who don`t. For instance Pogačar doesn`t and in the interview he said why use something that can break - I completely agree with this statement.
Ineos on disc next year is just my prediction based on Bernal's last descent in stage 17
Really like your analysis and coverage of fast races, but could you slow down a bit? Speed talking and camera views that don't seem to last more than 4-5 seconds makes it difficult to take things in... those of us in parts of the world where cycling coverage is minimal at best, we want to see more of what's happening.
Roglic has sealed his third Vuelta victory for sure. Basically he can just wait for the last time trial and does not need to attack any more, but can just sit on the other GC Contenders wheels to assist Kuss. If Roglic is sitting on their wheels, the other GC Contenders will not make any move and that will be the best way to cover an attack made by Kuss. A domestique on this level needs to be given his days to shine because otherwise he is going to leave the team very soon.
It might be not a popular opinion, but I think that Movie Star has been smart on this day by not going with that attack or investing to much energy to chase Roglic and Bernal in the valley. There have been other teams to do the work and they were maintaining their energy for the last climb. Bernal has put a lot of effort into this attack and is likely going to pay the prize on the following stages. Roglic has already been unbeatable for Movie Star and Bernal did not gain any time at all. If Movie Star drops Bernal on the up-coming stages they have got a good chance to finish second and third on GC which is the best possible result for them.
Valiente egan!!! Grande ese dia
i miss valverde
how come we have not seen our game play on cycling team manager?
Wasn't Bernal the freshest (not attending the TDF) at this Vuelta and Roglic half cooked from a partial TDF?
4:05 6.4W/kg for 20-20 minutes - absolute madness
Whats going on with Ineos and their riders crashing on "training" rides. I thought they were the kings of planning, marginal gains, etc. Definitely worthy of a LR investigation!
When does Sep get a chance in a GT with support from team
we need to point out many of this riders are still recovering from having the virus not only once but twice
It may have been Primoz's most iconic win but was it his smartest? Why is he even following Bernal's wheel? At the time of Bernal's 60km to go attack he was in Red and 3mins ahead of Bernal. Make Bahrain chase. Make Movistar chase. Let them burn their domestiques and soften them up for Thursday. Those teams were losing podium places not Primoz. If he wanted to make a statement do it on the final climb and not burning out your legs in the valley. I think it was poor tactical decision by Jumbo.
You said it, it was a statement
Movistar lost their domestique. Their only climber left is Verona and he got dropped on the penultimate climb and crashed with Vlasov. If Roglic stays, his team will have to give BV a hand to chase. Roglic could be isolated on the climb. Then he has to fend off the attack from Movistar duo, Yates, and Haig. By following Bernal, he nullified the attack from his rival. He just needs to worry about one person - Bernal. And as long as he sticks with Bernal, he still can keep the gap as is. But turn out Bernal doesn't have the form to sustain that long attack. The fact that he gains 1:35 at the end by benefiting from Bernal's attack, yes, it's a smart move. Otherwise, he'll have to deal with this Yates/MAL's opportunistic attack like the previous mountain stages. You know like having mosquitos around your face, they are just annoying. So might as well, go big or go home.
Have you watched the post stage interview? Roglic said he didn't think,he just go with instinct, that's how he race, if you don't like that's not his problem. If that was not a smart move then I guess the "smartest" move is to stay still and not do anything
@@ivansarmiento7144 Look I love racers going on instinct. It's way more fun to watch than the days of Team Sky trains. However, I guess that's my point exactly with Primoz. He didn't think. Jumbo's DS should be managing him and getting Primoz through to the TT with the freshest legs and not letting him go on instinct. He's clearly the best rider in the Vuelta, but if he blows on Thursday's very tough stage and/or crumbles in the TT...well we can look to today when he put too many nails in his legs needlessly pulling turns in the valley. I'm hoping that's not the case as Primoz is one of my favorite GC guys I want him to win.
Roglic had good legs and his honed racing instinct and tactical brain told him that it was possible to gain a big buffer on Mas and Lopez. He had been riding with them all day and could see exactly what condition they were in. Both were not capable of sustained attacks and in an interview after the race Mas said he was feeling bad and for sure Roglic had seen that.
So when Bernal went on attack at 60km to go I'm sure in a split sec Roglic's racing brain calculated that Bernal still had good legs (and he did until 7 km from the finish) and that there was a good chance of significantly gapping Mas and Lopez. It was a gamble but it paid off very well.
Let's be honest. Bernal has got nothing to loose. 5th, 6th, 7th...whatever, whereas Mass and Lopez have. I would be riding pretty much the same if I were them.
the same corner of outs crash
