This video really resonated with me. As former law enforcement making six figures, it’s frustrating to constantly hear you need to start at IT help desk. It doesn’t help that hiring managers, who have done the IT route, often act as gatekeepers with a chip on their shoulder. Unlike other fields, cybersecurity isn’t very friendly to older professionals. Hospitals aren’t asking recently graduated nursing students to have experience, nor do engineering firms for recently graduated engineering students. Cybersecurity is a very blurry career path and discouraging for those looking to transition.
If you don’t care about remote work and you have a college degree, you can get a CISA certification by ISACA and audit IT. It’s a great way to make six figures without having to become an actual IT worker. There is money in IT compliance especially if you get an IT Auditor job with a larger company or the government. And, you learn a ton on every audit about the business and its information systems. I am trying to become an IT professional (cloud and cybersecurity) because I want to go more remote. My current job requires 4 days on and 1 day remote but it definitely pays well over $100k. It would pay more if I specialized in cloud compliance but I want a little more freedom from the office cubicle.
When you speak about the CISA and auditing the certification, is this a free way to earn that cert?

This video hits home for me. I've been studying and working to change careers from working in the food service industry to IT. I just recently graduated with my 2 yr IT degree and I'll be enrolling at WGU later this yr. I eventually want to get into the cybersecurity field (like many others out there). I currently work in a state prison so my salary is very decent for what I do. My biggest fear/issue with changing careers is having to take a massive pay cut "just to get experience". There are jobs where I could apply to right now, even within the public sector in my state, but my family can't afford for me to take a $20-30+k pay cut just to get into an entry-level help desk/tech support role. This video gives me hope that I will eventually land a position where I won't have to greatly sacrifice monetarily and still be able to support my family while getting experience in the IT field (wherever I land my first gig).
I'm working as an IT Project Manager and making a transition into a more hands-on role - thanks for sharing as I've been going through how to navigate a very similar situation.
Yea I'm a trucker, studying cybersecurity. I know I'm taking a paycut. I was at 144k last year. I'm willing to work for 60k as long as I can work remotely in the philippines. Lol

This a great video again Josh. Consistency is the toughest part for me and I need to do better. I kinda fell off a bit. Currently work in help desk for about two years now. I’ve done some additional learning and studying for the last nine months, earning Sec+ and Net+ (current army guard deployed) and have been trying to figure out what practical field of IT or cybersecurity I want to specialize in. I’ve played around in Azure/AWS and did some projects with their services, got some hands on some programming (python/HTML for example) and even revisiting basic IT fundamentals through kevin apolinario’s content. Towards the end of the rotation I’m going to WGU for a MSCIA (I should have done it earlier in my deployment with more free time but I didn’t think about WGU at that time 😭).
This video just further helps augment and validate my career situation. Appreciate your content again!

Definitely Security + is a good start for anything in IT. You can specialized by taking some AWS cert or MS Azure certs in order to start. Hope this helps. ✌🏽😎

So the way I see it is, Information Technology (IT) is the field. Cybersecurity, networking, cloud computing, database management, etc.. are all specializations in IT or Sub Domains. So when someone asks me, should I start in IT or cybersecurity, my answer is. Do you mean start a career in IT specializing in Cyber?
It's like saying, "Should i study medicine or nursing? Well Nursing is in the Field of medicine.

It does. If you manage to pass the test you will be an Associate CISSP which is nice because now you just need to get the experience. But it will not help in getting the High paying job that CISSP can help you with.
