    I know only a camera nerd would notice this, but the Indian photographer at the end of the ad was holding a Pentax 645Z for street photography, cause you know the millennial's in your ad Pepsi can afford to take $12,000 worth of camera to protest!?! WTF

      I'm going to sound so professional offended by saying this but... she wasn't indian (well maybe but unlikely) at all and its weird that you would just assume such a thing you literally could have said girl or even person and anyone would be able understand who you're talking about

      THE LONE WANDERER it doesn't have to be the person's main point for it to be wrong, or for it to be worth pointing out. She was visibly Muslim. Why assume she was Indian? It doesn't make sense and it's somewhat akin to people assuming someone is Chinese based on them being Asian. The point is it's an ignorant assumption to make.

    Old Pepsi commercials were cool. I still remember the Britney ones, and the generation before me had MJ dancing. So how do you go from talented dancers to a untalented, stuck up girl talking about shit that does not apply to her. Go back to the old days, and ditch politics, especially in a commercial about a fizzy drink.

      Even though at it's core all advertising is mostly about sex and our quest for it....all advertising since it's inception as an industry has also been about politics, whether trying to appeal to people's interest in it or lack thereof. What advertisers have always done is to appropriate what was "counter-culture" and move it into the mainstream by dumbing it down, so yesterday's hippies become today's new demographic. Remember the old Coke ad with the "I'd like to teach the world to sing..." jingle? That commercial directly implied that drinking Coke may be synonymous with world peace...or that it could at least help. That was marketed at the hippies of the 60's whose movement collapsed; Coke used the hippy sentiment to stir nostalgia in then-jaded yuppies; That old coke ad was just as bad as this Jenner ad it's just that the average person is drawing more definitive lines in the sand than previous generations did; we're rejecting the shallow appeal of Californication and the empty rhetoric of advertising.
      This highlights the now manifold problems with the effectiveness of modern advertising: not only have we all become informed about the tactics of advertisers but, as Colbert points out with his "We're all the Demographic" joke, the average person is becoming more aware of social issues and the divisive tactics of corporations which is actually causing a unity of purpose and raising the level of discourse on the ground level (these things aren't used in ads because there's no way to capitalise off of peace.).
      Most importantly, though, is that advertising has been at it so long that it can longer relate to counter culture and even if it could, the tactic of recycling one generation's ethos as another generation's ad jingle has made "culture" so homogeneous that there is precious little of substance in the counter culture that advertiser's can use as a selling point without undermining their own agenda since modern counter-culture is in direct conflict with the Capitalist state.

      Exactly. Well for the most part, as you see companies have the conniving tactic of using trending subjects, just like you said, to make things more relevant even if it has no relevance in the product -ironic- but not just that, if it all went south they knew it would go viral through the infamous "any publicity is good publicity" marketing tactic. It was a win-win and i'm sure they would have preferred to just have a relevant trending ad but this like you mentioned works too.

      Fair enough. Still doesn't mean "force for good."

    • @joshuapray
      @joshuapray 7 років тому +6

      No. As a matter of fact I edited my original comment right after posting it, because I realized 'oh, right, that's spelled correctly.' Then I deleted it because the commenter right before me had said the same thing. So, no need to repeat. Simple. And no, that doesn't make sense. That isn't even remotely like what she said. She said, "If being complicit is wanting to be a force for good and make a positive impact, then yes, I am complicit." Not a hint of sarcasm. Complaisant means she would simply allow stronger voices to prevail, and complacent that she is satisfied with her own successes. Neither of these make any sense. Why defend it? She just didn't know what the word meant, or she tried to spin it.

    • @joshuapray
      @joshuapray 7 років тому +10

      Haha. What are you missing here? That's not what complaisant means either! She didn't mistake it for anything. She just didn't know what it meant.

    Activism isn't something to be trivialized. Pepsi, apparently, didn't get that memo. And to the people bitching about #BLM, just so you know, in case you didn't or you have forgotten, that's not the only movement in place. Have you forgotten about the #noDAPL protestors and how horribly they were treated by the police? Tents were set on fire, 167 protestors were injured in altercations, someone's arm was blown off, tanks and the military were sent in, people were arrested...and that's not even the brunt of it. So yes, this is about #BLM and #noDAPL and all the other movements that have been belittled by this commercial. This is about all those people whose encounters with police brutality have been disparaged. If Pepsi really cared about 'bringing people together', they would've found a way to do it that actually honors these movements. But that's not what it was about. It was a commercial. It was about making sales, raking in the money. Commercials are all about the profits. The bottom line is that no struggle should be exploited for profits.

    • @breef.7374
      @breef.7374 7 років тому +17

      Yvonne Wabai What about all of the riots in the name of the #BLM movement? No one seems to remember those anymore. #BLM "protests" are hardly protests, they usually turn into riots - which is why police force is then used. EVERYONE has faced some form of discrimination in their lives, not just the African Americans.

    • @chrisrembert6928
      @chrisrembert6928 7 років тому +13

    • @yvonnew2688

      Bree F. Police force was being used way before the protests. Remember Trayvon Martin and the rest of the others who have died (and others injured) due to police misconduct and police brutality? (I'm saddened to reduce them to statistics but there hardly enough time to discuss them all.)Also, notice how my point was inclusive but you still somehow managed to only see 'African Americans'? That's what bias does to you. You are so biased that you missed the entire point of my comment. "Other people experience discrimination too." Sure. Have you ever thought of why there are different movements? That's so that they can focus on a particular issue. You saying that other people experience discrimination too is like running through a cancer foundation screaming that other diseases kill too. Also, bringing up the 'other people are discriminated too' argument when the discussion is about the discrimination of a specific group of people is just an attempt to override the discussion, not a show of how much you care about ending discrimination. Imagine talking about 'other people matter' at a convention to address anti-semitism. Or bringing up 'Christians suffer too' in a discussion about Islamophobia. Or saying that 'there are people living in deserts without water' when people are trying to find a solution to the Flint water crisis. Smh. Na ndungiugua thoni.

      +Yvonne Wabai Trayvon Martin died because he over-reacted to somebody following him, assaulted the guy and tried to bash the back of his skull in on the pavement. Trayvon Martin was a thug, a drug addict, somebody who fought for money, not some innocent kid who did nothing wrong. What the fuck did that have to do with police either? If you think the police were at fault for that incident it only demonstrates how brainwashed you are by regressive bullshit. Reduce them to statistics? Which statistics are those then? Because you do know that the statistics BLM perpetuates are either just straight up lies or half truths, right? BLM will cry racist if you use other statistics from the exact same source to disprove them too. If you look at real statistics though you quickly realize black people are proportionately unjustifiably shot at only a few percent more than whites, but when statistics also show black people commit 4-5 times more violent crime I think that minor difference is smaller than expected. They are also reported on at a far higher rate, a few months ago I saw a video of an old white man who clearly wasn't all there get tazed by a police officer while she screeched "comply" at him and when he was on the ground she shot and killed him, did you hear about that on national TV? No? Strange, it's almost as perpetuating civil unrest generates more views.
      The problem with BLM isn't that there are bigger problems, it's that the problems they claim exist aren't real, they make them up. Their founders are straight up black supremacists, they praise black panther terrorists, they called for segregation of whites, etc.
