I just recently (June 14/24) took the carb off my 9.9 and to get at that one nut on the carb easier, I took the pull cord assembly off which took no time at all... easy peezy. Just make sure you u zip tie it together so that it doesn't spring apart. When putting that nut back on the carb, grab it by the handle and set it down on the ground or work bench.... this way you have a better chance of the nut sitting flat on the threads.... easy peezy!
Great video! I think I would take the starter off first. That would make the access easier but watching you solve the problems is worth the price of admission. Thank you for sharing your techniques.
Storm came in and sunk buddies boat and this motor but we found er and took it apart to clean it up forgot how to put it back together haha! This video will get him back on the high sea's in no time! Thanks
Avoid the headache, grab a 9/16 open end wrench and a long zip tie (or anything to hold the pull rope starter together), and remove that top starter bolt and set starter to the side and it makes it a world of difference.
I had luck with temporarily removing the recoil starter to get to the flat head screw and the other carb nut. I just held a recoil in my hand to keep it from flying apart and put it back on until I was done with carb rebuild.
That's what I just did too. My motor got submerged in a storm last night. I hate having to go thru my motors every time one gets swamped in the lake because the only thing that comes to us out of Fargo, ND is 80 mph winds lol. Now I remember why I hate renting out my small Lund Boats with Evinrude motors lol. I had to laugh when he said his fuel line was held on by a zip tie and he didn't think that was stock. Guess again lol.
Hi I got a 1989 evinrude 9.9 and the knob where the stop button is stuck it doesn't what to turn is there a function to that knob I'm thinking yes I saw u use it if yes what does it do on and how can I get it to turn thanks !
@@Michaelsbackyardmarina Sorry I didn't see the notification for your comment. I am using West Marine TC-W3. I think where I went wrong is that I was using the old gas can and I just added the oil to the can without making sure it was shaken. After getting a new fuel tank, the chunks are gone, but now it wont stay running without having to keep playing with the choke. Also the plugs were fouled. I just got my carb kit in the mail! Time for a rebuild. With your video should be no prob! Thank you RMD
If the transmission lever is in forward, can it be hand cranked? I have a 1978 model. I can't seem to move it to neutral with the engine off. I'm relatively new to these old 2-stroke engines.
they are designed so you can't start them in gear for safety reasons on newer models like in the 80s. Not sure about a 78. Mostly they have a throttle lock out to minimize the ability to rev the engine without it being in gear.
RMD Creations I have a 1986 Johnson 15 hp and when it starts it will idle super high and then go low and then high again and sometimes when I start it it will start to idle super high and then I can’t turn it off even when I disconnect fuel and choke it. Do you have a solution to make it idle smoother?
Question been running mine in a drum now I’m getting a lot of oil coming out on the sides of the drum and I running to much oil in the fule, running at 50-1
I have a question, I have the same motor I never had it running yet but it seems that when it's in gear if I turn the throttle backwards it kicks itself into neutral, is that normal?

I did the same but I put a nut on the pull cord bolt

Great video! I was able to get my outboard running tiptop in about 30 seconds!
Excellent!
Great video, starter, one bolt and everything is accessible. Nice video!!

Yes definitely don't let the spring go. Not the end of the world if it does. I'm working on one now that I have a spring on order for.
give up screw on the starter, not to explode
I just use some electical tape to hold recoil assembly together and then just hang it over the side
Thank you Sir! Thanks for taking the time to put up this video. :)
Glad it was helpful!
.30 SECOND MARK BIG SPIDER GOING UP UNDER THE SHELF
Have enjoyed all the videos! God bless
Glad you like them!
Sure would be nice to get a hold of a service manual for some of these motors.
they have them available on marineengine.com
I removed the pull-start, which made it a lot easier to remove the carburetor retaining nut.

Lol.
My fuel line has a zip tie too, I wondered if it was factory.
I need a 15 hp carb for my 9.9 1986 :)
hard to come by. good luck
Hi, your explanations are excellent. Where can I find a 1998 Johnson 9.9 carburetor kit?

what was that little red seal for? I didn't see you install it?
great video. Thank you. Any idea why Johnson 9.9 outboard would blow oily chunks with some fuel when starting ?
What's your mixture and what kind of two stroke oil you using?

Roll the throttle back to idle first !!

You will have to show a segment on installing piston rings next. I don't think that you have showed this yet?
That shirt is 🔥🔥🔥
Thank you very much, thanks for watching
Pull the starter, that small screw and right side nut is then easily accessible
Be sure to hold the starter together so the spring does not unwind . Leave bolt in and wrap with tape to hold everything together
for sure, thanks for watching
Where does that red piece go???
My fuel line is also held on with zip tie.
I'm learning zip tie is an ok way to go.
These motors suffer from primary vacuum loss often. because the crankshaft seals dry out and leak. Causing rough idle
Good tip ,forgot about that and I just learned it on T-mikes channel the other day.
What year model is this outboard?

sounds like you have some excess fuel and air getting in when it shouldn't
Question been running mine in a drum now I’m getting a lot of oil coming out on the sides of the drum and I running to much oil in the fule, running at 50-1
That's just the nature of the two stroke. To help break down the oil you can put a dish washer tab in the water. That's what I do on my big tank
Better check the lower unit to be safe had it happen once.
Quand on a pas la clé de 7/16 c'est pas plus simple de dèmonter le lanceur?
Thanks for watching.
Will a Johnson 84 9.9hp turn into a 15 with a 15hp carburetor swap for 9.9 carburetor
Check out leroysramblings.com and find out.
some models you have to swap the exhaust tube also.
hello where to find johnson 16 hp four stroke 4 stroke engine gas pump

Haven't run into that before.
Woah I'm so stupid, I went and double checked yesterday and it turns out it wasn't fully clicked into gear Hahaha I'm sorry for wasting your time!
What kit did u use… could u provide me a link?
Look it up on marineengine.com
1/3 cup = 2.67 oz that is what I use . Ams oil is the best .
Good stuff
What was the float drop?
How easy is it to line up and re-install the flywheel ?
It's keyed so it's easy peasy
As soon as I saw that shirt I through my dad made a UA-cam video.
There's 32 oz in a quart now
Hey , that's what I was fixing to say !!! I know a quart of beer says 32 oz. Lol !
I absolutely hate it when a bug crawls up one of my orifices... LOL
what is the red part ???
I think you are talking about the part that won't let you start the motor in gear or open throttle.
@@Michaelsbackyardmarina i talk about thé part juste braisé thé crank
You have to remove the starter and a right nut come off easy it is a bitch to find the nut later down the shift lick hole
yes it is. Welcome aboard
Mike I lost my low end needle setting where is a good place to start ??? 9.9

I’ve only ever seen the fuel pump on the other side of the motor ???
