  • These are rear backing plates restored by Randy Gross. I also ordered his cast iron drums. For this install I removed the rear radius arm so that I did not have to disassemble the backing plates.

It looks like you left out the rear "grease baffle" when installing the the rear brakes. I just did this job yesterday on my '31 S/W Town Sedan.

@MAFCAJim, if you look closely at 3:17-3:27 you will see that Randy wire ties the rear grease baffle to the emergency brake carrier when he ships the unit. I left the rear grease baffle wire tied until I was inserting the bolts through. So it is in there and installed correctly. Thank you for watching and make sure to subscribe!

Thanks for the video. May do the same and just install the completed assembly rather than fiddle around trying to get the levers through a tight spot through radius rod.

    I also have a 31 Tudor Sedan,
If I may suggest, the next time put the castle nut back on BACKWARDS flush with the end of the bolt then use your brass drift. If your just hitting the bolt threads without the nut, use a piece of wood instead of the brass. Your threads will love you for it.
    Now go drive her, ...

Ahh good point! The same concept as using the nut on the steering wheel when pulling it off or the nut on the axle end when using the puller so as not to mushroom them. Thanks!

In my opinion, you wouldn’t want to reverse the castle nuts and bang on them because they have a slight taper to them that would mess up your threads. Find a regular nut that fits to do that.

    “J,”
I really don’t understand what was gained by removing those 2 bolts only to re-install them. I’m guessing it had something to do with removing the wire that Randy put on to hold everything together during shipment???

Looks like he used the two bolts to support the radius rod in place. I might have just used tywraps to support it (keep it from sagging).

I have a 1929, always going to work on the rear brakes this winter. I wondered if you had any information on Randy? For I might be able to get rebuilt rear brakes!

Can you please tell me EXACTLY what (old) parts did you send to Randy and what did you need to purchase from your favorite Model A parts supplier?
    Thanks!!!

      Bill,
I sent Randy the entire rear backing plate assembly for all four wheels. He rebuilds, restores, or sends back new. I did not need to buy anything else other than paint to paint the new cast iron drums from Randy. Give him a call, he will give you all the answers.
