- Na de vliegramp MH17 werd 23 juli 2014 uitgeroepen tot dag van nationale rouw. Die dag kwamen veertig kisten met slachtoffers aan op vliegbasis Eindhoven.
Heel het land is geschokt door de vliegramp, waarbij 196 Nederlanders omkwamen. Vlaggen hingen halfstok, kerkklokken werden geluid en op Schiphol werden bloemen gelegd. Na de herdenking gingen 40 rouwauto's in colonne naar Hilversum.

Op deze dag was ik trots om Nederlander te zijn. Het respect, de ceremonie, de samenkomst en eensgezindheid, alles was mooi en eervol. Ik was 14, dus had niet zo heel veel hierin meegemaakt maar dit was hartverwarmend. Ik moet er 7,5 jaar later nog steeds om huilen

Dit was voor mij net als voor zovelen een bijzondere, trieste dag. Ik was net terug in Nederland na 6 jaar in het buitenland te hebben gewoond, en in die zes jaar was ik best een beetje mijn band met Nederland kwijtgeraakt. Toen dit gebeurde, en ik zag hoe het hele land als 1 met de nabestaanden mee rouwden en ook ik de betrokkenheid met de nabestaanden voelde wist ik het weer: Ik ben Nederlander.
Zeer mooi en ontroerend dit terug te zien. Niet alleen hoe het georganiseerd is maar vooral de hoeveelheid mensen op de been die allemaal op hun eigen manier oprecht hun steun betuigen. Nederland, wat ben je soms toch mooi.
