Nice vid. My Max is 9 yrs old now. He's my first dog. Got him as a puppy when I retired. I had ZERO dog experience. I read books for a year and studied all breeds during the same period before deciding to get an ESS.
I was blessed. Max was a total gent as a puppy. With the exception of puppy poop/pee accidents during housetraining, he was great as an indoor puppy. No mischief of any sort.
Max is a Bench Springer, so he's not as high energy as a Fieldie, but still very active and loves the outdoors. I absolutely adore Max, as he's taught me alot about dog/human relationships. He's very sweet to everyone he meets, whether adult, teen or child. Since I did my due diligence with regard to his bloodlines during my search, he's had minimal health issues. In 9 yrs, he's had one ear infection (my fault) and hot spots on his belly area which were difficult to bring under control. Overall, he's been a fantastic companion. Just the typical sweet, silly and playful boy that most Springer Spaniels are. Love his look right after he's freshly groomed with that awesome Breed Standard cut.
The two pupsters in your video are real lookers and appear to be just happily chilling out.

Phil McCrevice Yes, to me my Max is the best dog in the world. Only someone like you would understand that sentiment. I dread even thinking about losing Max. I hope he outlives me. I wouldn’t even try to imagine the void in your life without Kozmo. I do totally understand you missing Kozmo more than a human. The bond never dies.

I've had springers all my life. They have never ever been aggressive at all. They're also absolutely amazing with children. My kids could do anything they wanted to him and he'd just lay there wagging his tail. They're also extremely intelligent and easy to train. They live to learn and please their owner.
Nearly everything this guy has said is exactly the opposite of what springers are actually like. They're unbelievably loving and completely non aggressive

mine is 12 1/2 years old, and shes so smart, beatiful personality and she loved to cuddle. However, she does sometime snap or growl whenever there's food and other dogs around. As I said she smart, so she tells you whenever something happens that she doesn't like. But overall she's a great dog and I have a connection with her that I've never had with any other dog. When she's gone, huge part of me also goes away :( but luckily the vet says she still got the health of a young springer spaniel :)

I've had my English Springer Spaniel, Lexie for 15 years now, she's honestly one of the best dogs I've ever had the pleasure to know/be with. She's very intune with my father's emotions (he's retired navy) and overall is a good girl, playful, healthy and always smiling. Somethings I heard in your review didn't make sense to me. We've also recently gotten a puppy, who is now almost a year old, he's a Saint Bernard,Great Pyrenees mix, also a huge sweetheart. Lexie didn't really react badly to him, she was just confused and a bit annoyed for about a week, but never territorial. Although, all dogs, even the same breed are unique in their own way. Just thought I'd share my experience!

"Springer rage" is incredibly rare. It's something to be aware of but it's unlikely to ever happen. Also the ear infection issue can be avoided easily by keeping the top inch or two of fur inside the ear trimmed short as they do with show dogs.

I got a Dane that has Dane rage.. And I thought all Danes were gentle giants. Lol wrong. Mine just became spoiled and jealous and after that I don't know what happened! . He started disliking all other dogs. (maybe cuz I never fixed him) who knows. Now I'm thinking of getting a Springer spaniel. And I hear about Springer rage. TBH, I think it should be called dog rage, cuz all dogs have it, some just don't act out on it and have different personalities.

"A lot of issues with tempremant" and "aggresion"? Spaniel rage is very rare, and affects cockers as much as Springers (still not often). Springer spaniels are predominantly known for their affectionate, happy nature, as well as their hyperactiveness. I've known tonnes of springers over the years, and while they've all had the wild energy of a toddler in a sweet shop, I've yet to meet one who's shown any sign of being aggressive - although they're often bity puppies. I would say that show springers, like the ones in this video, being more "pure" bred are the ones who are most commonly affected by spaniel rage, but overall it's not an issue you are very likely to face, especially if you deal with a reputable breeder.

I don't want to malign this breed. We had two: one the show dog and the other the field springer. The show dog attacked my sister so badly she had to have stitches in bum. Attacked us all until we put him down. The tell tall sign was the dog was not engaged even as a puppy. Didn't like to be pet, did not respond to stimuli. I agree with him that young kids and springers is a mix. The field springer was insane. You need to work with them A LOT. Lots of space and training. Don't choose this dog unless you are going to work with it for life.

All you need is to be careful with the breeder, find a serious breeder with healthy dogs and you will not have temper issues.
I got a show type , springer spaniel and she has such a good temper , very affectionate, loving , loyal , playful , active , I just have compliments for my dog .
I met a lady in my building with a springer in my building with temper issues , but the breeder she got the dog is known for bad temper dogs .

@Lilman Yellow First of all I'm not full of crap. I'm telling anecdotal stories of two dogs I had when I was a kid. The reason the second one was crazy is because it had no training or discipline and no outlet. So i'm saying don't get this dog if you are not going to put in the work. First one was clearly from a bad breeder so obviously look out for that.

You are nuts....Springer rage is extremely rare...I breed these guys...lots of families with small children buy from me and NEVER have an issue. What people call "Springer rage" is most of the time is the result of poor training and not really anything to do with the breed. Their temperament is amazing!!! Great family dog. Excellent hunting dog and if you are active on trails they love to go with you!

    • @habyss

Having been a Springer owner, I can attest to the Springer Rage. Just saying something like "get the bone" would trigger it. We got our Springer from a breeder. The parents were champion show dogs and WERE NOT FRIENDLY. Also, the breeder tried discouraging us from taking the puppy we selected and to instead take a sibling. In retrospect, we think she knew something about him not having the best temperament. Even the musician Sting, who had multiple Springers as pets, acknowledged the temperament issue they had. This this goes back to the 80s. Hopefully the rage has been bred out somewhat since then.

@@habyss nah never experienced that, I've had 3 and these were practically working dogs. If they are prone to 'rage' I'd hazard a guess that you havent trained or been treating your springer properly. You need to get a handle on behaviour like that from a young age. That being said I'm quite surprised you even bought from that breeder after seeing the parents temperaments. Even the breeder seems dodgy af. I would have walked away.

I have one and he is the sweetest dog I've ever met in my entire life. Loves to cuddle more than any dog I grew up with (which was german shepherd, golden retriever, king charles spaniel) He is well behaved, NEVER barks, and does not have issues with other dogs.He doesn't jump on your legs and if you begin to eat all you have to do is tell him once to go sit/lay down and he will never bug you again. I do believe these dogs have potential for being a VERY well trained dog.

you won't regret it. I cut up 'begging strips' into one inch squares and kept them in my shirt pocket for rewards for good behavior, and only a tap on the nose with my index finger for bad behavior. You'd have thought I'd beaten him with a 2x4 from how bad he felt getting his nose tapped. The rolled-up newspaper advice is BS. I could walk my Springer without a leash, and he would look, but not cross the street to go after a cat or squirrel. He was easily trained to sit, lay down, and come, with hand signals. Very good with children and other animals. All he wanted to do was smell the cats, but they would bow up and hiss and him. The little old lady Karens would get upset to see him running around outside at my apartment building, and had no idea what "My dog obeys voice commands" meant. He passed the requirements for a therapy dog, which has one test where you have him walk (without a leash) right past a treat, and he won't go for it until you tell him it's okay. How are you doing with your puppy who is now a year old?

  • @markanthony4655

I have had my 8 week old Springer for a week now. he is learning very fast, got him potty trained in 3 days, by constantly walking him to the back door, now he does it himself. He either goes straight out if the door is open, but stands by the back door and yaps when it is shut. He is very social, both around adults and small children, my Grandchildren have been hugging and petting him with no problems, he likes their shoe laces and zippers on coats . Just started leash training around the house for when he is able to go out in 3 weeks (he needs his 2nd injections yet). he is going to be a pet, but will also learn skills "out in the field" as I do a lot of hill walking and camping in a tent in the local forests. First time I have had a puppy, as my old Springer (30 years ago) was an older dog when he came to me as I re-homed him with me from a pound, no one wanted him as he was older, but I took a shine to him and he was my best buddy for a few years.

I got my Springer Spaniel when he 5 "Ziggy" he is a terrific dog. I lived on a farm and never had to leash him while walking ... he loved when I rode my bike so he could run along side me. He was trained by his previous owner, and which is why he was so well behaved. My buddy is now 14 and still have spunk left in him. He is my best buddy. I have never had any issue with him. He is territorial with me ... he doesn't like when anyone sit near me. He loves playing with my cats (when I had them), and he tolerates my daughters dogs haha.

He would attack out of the blue and then the next minute he would wimper knowing that he did something bad. It was just so sad to see him go through this. Yesterday we had to put Cooper down not only for the safety of others but for the safety of himself. Needless to say he had ripped my hand open at the age of 12/13 so he was sent to live on a small yard/farm the next morning.
It’s exceptionally rare and my case it was bad breeding. The father clearly had it and all the puppies were effected. Showed at the age of 2 I think

One thing I’d like to mention is that there are two kinds of springer spaniels. There are show (also sometimes called bench) springer spaniels and there are field springer spaniels. What you see in this video are show springer spaniels. Show springers are heavier and bigger boned and have longer and thicker coats whereas field springer spaniels are smaller, have pointier heads, a more streamlined appearance, and shorter, wavier coats. Show springers also tend be lazier and more laid back whereas field springers are higher strung and very energetic.

We had a Springer growing up. His name was Sam and he had zero temperament issues. Just the sweetest dog you could imagine. My parents got another Springer when we kids were grown up. His name was Jack. He had some temperament issues, but they were isolated and you could sort predict when they would happen (if they would happen). For instance, Jack loved swimming in the pool. Getting him out of the pool was a bit tricky. He'd growl at you as he would swim by if he saw you with a towel or you told him "out." There were a few other times we knew he might get in the "red zone" as we called it, but he was also a very sweet dog other than those few things.
Both dogs suffered from hip issues later in life. But they were both great dogs. Very smart, very playful, very family-friendly. Highly recommend!

I've never been around those specific spaniels but I have seen a cocker spaniel go into "spaniel" rage before. A 10 year old dog who had zero aggression before. Unfortunately it was twords my 2 year old nephew at the time. And a er trip with stitches to the face were required. Now I'm always weary of stories about dogs that are said to of attack a person for no reason. Because a lot of the time, there is a reason. But I saw this first hand. The child was no where near the dog, and the dog jumped off the couch, walked to my nephew and lost his mind. The dog had also been around my nephew a lot, so it was a new thing and as to my knowledge my nephew had never been one to annoy the dog and the dog never showed any signs of nervousness or anxiety around him or anyone for that matter before. Luckily we were there and were able to intervene quickly or it could of been much worse than the 7ish stitches. My mom grabbed the dog and he reached back and bit her hand, and it was like he instantly snapped out of it at that point. Kinda like "oh shit" what am I doing kind of thing. My mom was devastated because that dog was like her baby. We did not have the dog put down. We had him checked out by the vet and that's when we learned that spaniels can do this. We keep him away from kids after that and he passed naturally about 5 years later and never had a episode like that again.

Ive had 4 over my life time im on 3 and 4 right now and i can honestly say I've never experienced most of these issues you talk about my first two spaniels were not with paper,s these two are I believe careful breeding is important often there is inbreeding in ones that are not pedigree or registered and recessive bad traits tend to come out I experienced the jealousy in my first spaniel toward our other dog at the time and what I would have more considered bipolar occasionally in my second Spaniel aside from that they were both great dogs the two I have right now have as i said are registered and are 7 years old littermates and are absolutely great dogs , this breed is not the only breed that I have had in my life when I was growing up we had labs German Shepherd Collie mix beagles beagle basset mix German Shorthair I've had in my adult life as I said for Springer Spaniels a lab two beagles a Norwegian Elkhound I will say this I think any dog that is raised with children can be a good dog and love children just like any dog can be made mean generally If you treat them good they'll be good dogs treat them bad not so much!!

I miss her everyday. Dottie was high NRG and she never met a tennis ball or another dog that she didn't like. A friend to everyone. I absolutely loved my Springer and some day when I feel the time is right, I will get another. Dogs are remarkable animals who devote themselves to you, bring you happiness and offer their undying love and appreciation.. My thoughts: if you're seeking a great medium sized companion dog....Springers are a great choice.

I have had 4 Springer Spaniels three I bought and one was given to me. I soon found out why I was given the fourth he had Springer rage. When you acquire a Springer from a breeder most have had their genetic’s checked. Springer rage is serious, my free Springer cost me over $800 in hospital bills + I had to have him put down. This is when I found out about Springer rage. My vet said one of his friends was almost killed by his Springer when the dog got a hold of his neck. With all this knowledge, I have no problem getting another Springer Spaniel from a good breeder.

I would disagree with the rage bit- Springer rage is so super rare and springers are WONDERFUL pets for families. My dog and I lived with my sister who has toddlers for four months. Her one son is autistic, wonderful kid but he has no gage on what is violent and hurtful to others and what isn't. He would stand on her, punch her on the snout, slap her face, pull her tail (yes I got her out of there, I love the kid but we couldn't happily stay there and I stay where my dog goes so we both live somewhere else now) and she never once even barked. She sat there and took it, she yelped out of surprise once, but never even growled. She was so so good. Never ever had her bite, or do anything remotely aggressive. Sweetest dog breed I've ever met in my life. Rage is so rare, springers are amazing family pets. It's a good thing to mention, yes, but I think it was blown out of proportion in this video.

ok. Not saying this "Couldn't" happen...But I would say this! These are the greatest dogs to have.. They aren't wired like other dogs. They think their people. I lost my first one when he was almost 16 years old. I cried like a baby over him. I was a basket case. It was around thanksgiving. I love holidays. But I didn't even want them to come the year he passed . (Kidney failure) He was always full of life , love and energy right up until the last month. OK...so I searched the internet for one that looked just like him. I couldn't find one that did ..Then I came across one in Ohio (We live in PA) yes we made the trip to get him and ended up coming home with him and a little girl liver and white too.. Their 1 1/2 years old and I can say they are the greatest dogs you could ever ever have. I had a boxer, a Scottie, and a great Dane throughout my childhood. I would NEVER go with another breed after having an English Springer. I swear by them. They are terroritorial.. With strangers coming by the house but most dogs are ) But very loving pets, entertaining, Bold, adorable . Here is Bonnie Jade and Clyde Jackson ua-cam.com/video/BmYQxLvT5iM/v-deo.html

I have owned Springers all of my adult life. Springer rage doesn't exist in my experience. My last Springer wouldn't hurt a fly...wish he would but he didn't. Love this breed, will own another soon. They are smart, funny, happy and playful dogs. They are gentle with people and other animals. My Jack's best friend was our cat. They are beautiful dogs and can have health issues but that's the only negative thing this breed may have. Love them!

I work at a kennels and come across plenty of Springers. They are so happy and eager to please and affectionate. The "Springer rage" I think is just to do w dogs in general. Not all dogs are the same, but hardly ever hear of a Springer being aggressive. Especially the show springers you have there

I have had 7 springers so far in my life and only one was a little aggressive... when they had food she would give a mean growl and snap at you... But the other 6 turn out great... I have used 3 of them for bird hunting because only three turn out not to be Gun shy and where easier to train then the others... As right now only have one and his name is Harley... Harley loves to swim, play ball, play with his toys, pretty good hunting dog, loves to cuddle, has been good around kids, loves pizza crust, likes to play with other dogs, and likes to jump...
Only thing about springers have to clean there ears often because gunk builds up in them... since there ears are so big and always playing outside... If your a runner good running dogs they can go the distance and enjoy it... When I’m working Harley wants to help even thow sometimes he thinks he can do these things but can’t because he forgets he is just a dog... But I try to let him help as much as he can...
Other dogs I have had and enjoyed
Beagles and best one was Jack love to rabbit hunt and was the best at it...
Chocolate lab really loved to play fetch and name was Doug
Doberman named sally looked fierce but was the sweetest dog I have had...
Husky named Duke o the hair but loved him anyways... A lot like Harley but a little less hair...
But I think Springers are my favorite bread because they are just so funny sometimes because they are to smart for there own good... 2nd favorite is Beagles but can howl a lot if don’t like that kind of thing... I am planning on getting another Husky and name it Balto because I do miss my Husky... Have to have a big yard which I do and plenty of woods for them to play... my last Husky got along really well with my last springer so I’m hoping it works out again... o Harley is a tri-color a mix of black, white, and Goldish light brown

My first dog, actually a family dog, was a "sprocker", a mix of a "Sports" ESP dad and an English Cocker mom, his dad was black and white, his mom was honey-blonde.
He inherited daddys body, color and looks, albeit on a smaller size: he inherited a cocker size from mom.
He was a pretty sweet dog, though nippy at times, don't get me wrong, not rage since anyway it isn't as common in hybrids or mix-breed dogs. He couldn't stand being touched by "scary" strangers and was a bit posessive; when other dogs came by the house he would pick his toys and "hide" them.
Despite that he loved the family and loved chasing birds and butterflies (the later was kind of cute) and if there was good weather he'd spent all day in the garden.
At the ripe old age of 13 an infection affected his kidneys and they failed due to his age and to avoid suffering we made the decision to put him to sleep. We were all heartbroken when he was gone.
We swore we would not have another dog. Result: enter a yellow lab-mix. Intelligent, friendly, extremely playful but despite being a lab he's afraid of the sea, the Springer loved playing and even swimming in the sea.

Misguided narration . The condition commonly known as rage syndrome is actually more appropriately called idiopathic aggression. The definition of idiopathic is of relating to or designating a disease having no known cause. It applies perfectly to this Behavior which has confounded Behaviorists for decades. While most other types of aggression can be modified and reduce through desensitization and counterconditioning idiopathic aggression often can't. Certain breeds seem more prone to suffer from this condition including Cocker and Springer Spaniels hence the common term spaniel rage Cocker rage and Springer rage Burmese mountain dog Saint Bernards Doberman Pinschers German Shepherds and Lhasa Apsos. This would suggest likely a genetic component to the problem. Again this is very rare.

    • @briarbragdon9962
      @briarbragdon9962 5 років тому +2

Very true. And I have also read that it may also be caused by some sort of idiopathic seizures within the brain of a dog, so not really an issue with "tempurament" and more of a possible medical issue. Which all dogs are suseptiable too.

My family has had Springers. And I worked in a vets. A woman did have to put down a male Springer due to rage syndrome. She was devastated. But she got two female Springer pups after that. It may be certain bloodlines. (Wonder if it is similar to what I heard about dobermans? That the brain could swell and cause sudden aggression.) My bench Springer was smart and very intuitive. A fenced yard is best. Their happy springing motion is beautiful.

BS on the rage bit, it's got to be so rare that it's a disservice to mention it. I've had 4 springers, two males and two females over the past 45 years. None of them had any kind of bad temper problems. One of my males was a buff 73# and the other was a buff 82#, so they can be bigger than 50-55lbs as stated. Both Males were 21"x21", tall, long, and on the upper end for 'medium-sized' dogs. With one of my males, I wore electricians lineman's gloves when I would wrestle and fight with him, and he would growl ferociously and try to mangle the gloves, but as soon as I said 'STOP' he would lick my face, and the 'fight' would be over with. My present Springer is over 16-1/2 years old, so the 12-14 year longevity prediction can be surpassed. The others made it to around 12 y/o.

Mine, field bred has her dog buddies. She was nuts about playing with other dogs till about 1 and a half. Just over two she is more focused on her searching/flushing and retrieving games. She is friendly with most dogs and offers the most non threatening greetings. She can be possessive with high value toys like bumpers, though she has let her dog buddies hold them.

People are so blind about things we love. I had a springer, he was a super sweet but I worked with him extensively. However, without proper training these dogs can be aggressive. A lab will just be naught if not trained, springers can be mean. Springer rage is a think and is more common among inexperienced breeders. I know several people it occurred with and the dog was sweet as ever prior to the incident. That being said, I have an uncle who has had 7-8 of these dogs and they were great bird dogs but didn’t necessarily love kids (not properly socialized) but were great dogs.
